Bibliographie Annuelle du Moyen Âge Tardif (BAMAT-Online)

In spring 2020, the new online database, BAMAT-O, was offi cially launched. This contains the complete bibliography that has been compiled since 1991 and therefore offers certain clear advantages over the printed edition of BAMAT. BAMAT-O makes it possible to search for both authors and their works (1250-1535), for the manuscripts in which these texts are preserved, and for all scholarly studies that relate to the topics covered. BAMAT-O is complementary to the printed volumes and can provide answers to a range of queries, as well as making it possible to cross-reference information and to refi ne previous searches. As such, it can often reinforce searches made by users, by providing them with additional and fortuitous fi nds.

History

BAMAT is an initiative of the Institut de recherche et d’histoire des textes in Paris (IRHT). It owes its origin to the so-called “Fichier Pellegrin”, a card index file that was named after its main contributor, Élisabeth Pellegrin (1912-1993). This file was published for the first time in 1987, on microfiches,

under the title the Répertoire bio-bibliographique des auteurs latins, patristiques et médiévaux. Four years later, in 1991, a more focused annual journal was published, entitled Bibliographie du Moyen Âge Tardif. This work is still ongoing, and the launch of the online version is a logical next step in its history.

Background and characteristics

BAMAT is known for the analytical quality of its entries, for the speed with which new publications are processed and included, and for its comprehensive nature. An analytical bibliography of authors and texts from the last three centuries of the Middle Ages (1250-1535), BAMAT pays particular attention to both the history of texts and their manuscripts, and to the history of doctrines. Publications on medieval society and institutions are analysed only

insofar as they are of interest to medieval authors and texts. BAMAT thus provides information and interpretations as they are presented within publications (albeit with obvious mistakes corrected between square brackets). In its print format BAMAT should be understood as a “bibliographie courante”, with each issue analysing only new publications. Older publications are therefore not referred to, although they might come up in the resume of a new publication.
