Principals Message: As we say good-bye to February, lets take a quick look at some of the activities that filled the month. Once again, Mrs. Buchan and Mrs. Loehmer organized a fun month of I Love to Read activities. This year the activities focused on Manitoba, and we included a Manitoba trivia question in our morning announcements. Did you know that Manitobas grass is Big Blue Stem. If you are in the school, take a peak in the gym to see our Books Read bar graph. The graph is categorized in family groups and this year, the green group collectively read the most books in February. Skating and curling kept students and teachers, busy throughout the month. Thank you to our parent volunteers for helping to tie skates and adjust helmets during Friday skating. Ms. Deline had everyone busy at various jump-rope-for-heart activity stations on Thursday afternoon, February 13. She was most grateful for student help with cutting up oranges, setting up stations, and monitoring stations. The oranges were a welcome treat following the event. (Our compost collection was loaded with orange peels that week!) Teachers prepared for Progress Conversations on February 18 and are busy working on Term II reports. Progress Conversations for Term II were set up according to teacher and/or parent/ guardian request. Term II report cards go home Friday, March 20. We welcome March and the coming of spring! The theme this year for I Love to Read month was On the Road to Manitoba 150. Students had the opportunity to participate in many fun activities. Thank you to all students who filled out book reports and displayed their love of reading. To celebrate Manitoba 150, the students were challenged by daily trivia about Manitoba. The family group that had the most correct answers to the question earned a puzzle piece for our Manitoba map.

On their 101st day of school, kindergarten to Grade 4 students came to school dressed in black and white to look like dalmatians. During the course of the day, students were able to participate in four different stations led by their teachers. Students worked on several activities where they were required to count 101 items. They created hat bands, dalmatians with 101 spots, pictures using 101 squares and completed a variety of estimation activities.

The Grade 1 class began the month of February with a very special visit from Mrs. Farmer and her groundhog. We learned all about Manitoba Merv and his connection to our community.

The Grade 1 class completed their very first breakout box this year. A breakout box is a series of puzzles that students must solve in a specified amount of time to unlock various locks on a box to reach whatever is placed inside the box. This type of activity builds classroom community as the students must work to-gether to complete the task. Our breakout box was based on the book “The Mitten” by Jan Brett. The students were all able to break out and can’t wait to do another one!

In February the Kindergarten class learned about Valentines Day. We wrote about the people we love, and learned about the Teaching of Love. In science, we have been learning about colour. We know how to make colours darker and lighter by adding black or white. We also started experimenting with primary colours, and used marbles to make art with the primary colours. In math we have been practicing solving problems with a partner. We figured out how to build a bridge with 20 lego pieces. We used teamwork!

Eric and Wyatt built a great bridge!

One of the spirit days for I Love to Read Month was Grand Beach Day. We were lucky be-cause on this day we got to do our Buddy Reading with our Grade one buddies at the beach! We also had a special guest. Mrs. Margett’s read a special story to us.

Page 8 February was very busy! On February 18th, we celebrated our 101st day of school! Our theme this year was 101

Dalmatians, and students were encouraged to dress up as a dalmatian or wear black and white. Students from

Kindergarten to Grade 4 participated in a variety of Math, ELA, and Art projects in the morning and then got to watch the movie in the afternoon!

In ELA, our class has T.U.S.C meetings every Day 6. For these meetings, students get to complete a variety of jobs while practicing their public speaking skills. These jobs include: interview, science experiment, artist, nutritionist, game reviewer, sports reporter, and many more!

to create abstract art

Wyatt does a science

experiment using

The Grade 7 & 8 were lucky enough to meet and talk to local author Desiree Gillespie. She spoke to the students about the process of publishing the book, and then shared her thoughts while she was writing the book. Her book can now be found in our library. Thank you to Desiree for coming in and to Mrs. Margetts for helping us organize the presentation.
