They benefited from the experience because, "Former friendships were strengthened and new ones were formed. Also, their confidence increased enormously as the week progressed. At the start of the week the teenagers were reluctant to participate but began to look forward to each new day. At the end of week performance, their voices were strong and they were excited to work as a team." These opportunities are important for them because, "young people with special needs deserve the same chances as everybody else. Their talent should not be overlooked because of their disability. It is difficult for people to see past their disability." If parents think this initiative would be beneficial for their teenager, they should contact Ballymoney Community Resource Centre. "If more young people participate it will increase support from funders and members of the community." What was the most rewarding part of the experience for Angela? "I gained as much from the program as the young people! When they were on stage, their smiles and enthusiasm were incredible. They worked hard, tried their best and knew how much they had achieved. When the audience clapped, even the blind musicians knew the effect they had on the audience. Their smiles were radiant." BALLYMONEY COMMUNITY NETWORK MEETING: TUESDAY 24 TH AUGUST 2010 AT 10AM

GLOBETROTTER SUMMER SCHEME

Ballymoney Community Resource Centre held their Globetrotter Summer Scheme from Monday 26 July to Friday 30th July 2010. The children travelled through the cultures of India, Guyana, Japan, Russia and back home to Northern Ireland. Ballymoney would like to express their thanks and gratitude to Naresh and Indu Jairath, Onika Smith, The Japanese Cultural society, ArtsEkta, SalsaNI and Dr Bob Curran for their support and contribution to the project. The children sampled foods from each country and were introduced to salsa, Indian dance and martial arts through the course of the week. The children participated daily in a computer based quiz which was based on the country they were visiting that day and took part in a craft based exercise each afternoon. The children enjoyed a party at the end of the week and some of the children performed Irish dancing for the rest of the group. The week was full of energy, fun and education and all those children who took part can’t wait to next year and do it all again, the only difference will be that they will visit different countries.

This is not an extensive list, and Trusthouse welcomes enquiries for other projects.

FUNDING REACHING OUT: CONNECTING OLDER PEOPLE

Summary of the programme

The Big Lottery Fund’s Reaching Out programmes – Empowering Young People and Connecting Older People will invest up to £40 million into supporting young and older people most at risk across Northern Ireland.

The Big Lottery Fund in Northern Ireland is making up to £20 million available over the next two years to promote the inclusion of older people by targeting those individuals at greatest risk of exclusion or isolation.

Older people can go through a number of transitions in their lives where they are especially at risk of becoming isolated and excluded, such as retirement, health changes, bereavement, or moving into residential care or sheltered housing.

We will support projects that:

• focus on older people aged 60 and over • last from three to five years • target older people at greatest risk of exclusion and isolation, who could be perceived as ‘hard to reach’ • involve older people in designing and running the project.

We want to fund projects that promote wellbeing, provide support or contribute towards independence and active citizenship, for example, social support activities including volunteering, advice provision, community safety, and intergenerational work.

This programme is an open and competitive programme that will mainly make revenue grants.

Are you eligible?

Voluntary or community led organisations can apply to this programme. For more detailed information see the apply section and the Connecting Older People guidance notes.

• Organisations applying for a grant of between £50,000 and £200,000 can choose to work in partnership, but it is not compulsory.

• Organisations applying for a grant of between £250,000 and £500,000 must work in partnership.

Partnerships may include private and statutory organisations and we strongly support and encourage crosssectoral working. The lead partner must be a voluntary or community organisation.

Big Lottery Fund funding should be distinct from Government funding and add value. This programme will not subsidise current or planned services that are normally supported through statutory sources of funding.

CARDI LAUNCHES NEW SMALL GRANTS CALL TO EXPLORE AGEING ISSUES

The Centre for Ageing Research and Development in Ireland (CARDI) is pleased to announce a new small grants programme to support greater use of existing research on ageing issues. It is offering up to €80,000 for research projects involving the use of existing data sources in Ireland, North and South. There are many data sources in Ireland, North and South, relevant to ageing research which may not be exploited to the extent that they could be. Revisiting existing data sets can help create new insights and is a valuable way to open up debate and discussions on issues relating to ageing. Sources may be statistical data issued by bodies such as the Central Statistics Office or the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency or data collected by government departments or administrative, regulatory or inspection bodies. To maximise the use of existing data this programme will support research involving the extraction, collation and analysis of existing data from an all Ireland perspective and summarising it into information relevant for policy or practice.

Applications are invited from individuals, or groups from academic, nonprofit and voluntary and community sectors The closing date for applications to the Data Mining Grant Programme is 12 noon on 1 October 2010. Find out more at www.cardi.ie/grantprogramme.
