    Aeraíochthis is a presentation and celebration of the cultural traditions of thecounty in music, song, dance and poetry, with a range of world-class

    musicians, singers and dancers taking to the stage.

    It will be interspersed with short accounts of Éamonn Ceannt by localpeople from Ballymoe. Finbar McNamara will talk aboutHistorical

    Ceannt , Ann Flanagan will talk about Éamonn Ceannt the Local HeroandEileen Maughan will discussCeannt: An Piobaire and Gaelgóir.

    Joe Steve O’Neachtain will give a short account of Éamonn Ceannt’stime in An Spidéal.

    Memorabilia & ExhibitionsLocal memorabilia will be on display including ‘Easter Rising 1916’ (art andessays from Ballymoe and Ballintubber Primary Schools.)

    Tere will also be a Galway County Council Archives Exhibition on displayentitled ‘From the Archives 1916: Revolution and Recollection’.

    BiographiesDr Verena ComminsVerena Commins is a lecturer at the Centre for Irish Studies in Galway,

    specialising in Irish Music Studies. Her teaching and research interests centre onconcepts of revival and commemoration, re-traditionalisation and authenticityin the appraisal of Irish traditional music contexts in Ireland and the diaspora.Verena is also a musician and plays button accordion and piano.

    Mar Gallag er, MA, MPAMary Gallagher is the author of16 Lives; Éamonn Ceannt,which was publishedby O’Brien Press in October 2014. She was born in Dublin and studied inUCD where she graduated with a BA in Economics and History (1975) She wassubsequently awarded a Master’s degree in Public Administration (1985) and anMA in Modern Irish History (2011).Mary spent her public service career in the IDA, Enterprise Ireland and theNational Sports Campus Development Authority.She is a grand niece of Éamonn Ceannt.

    Willie HenrWilliam Henry, author and historian is a native of Galway city. He has an incredibleability and unquenchable appetite for history and cultural. He is a graduate ofUniversity College Galway (NUIG). He is a member of the Galway Archaeological &Historical Society and served as secretary and public relations officer for a numberof years. He is also a member of the Old Galway Society and a former director ofGalway Civic rust.He is an accomplished author and is columnist of ‘ alking History’ the weeklyhistorical column published byGalway Independent newspaper with over 600articles for this newspaper alone. Tese articles cover a wide range of historicalsubjects and proles which are of local, national and international signicance.

    Éamonn CeanntBorn: 21st September 1881, Ballymoe, Co. Galway Died: 8th May 1916, Kilmainham Gaol, Dublin

    Éamonn Ceannt was born in Ballymoe, Co. Galway. He was one of seven childrenborn to James Kent, (an RIC Officer) and Joanne Galway.

    Ceannt was a uent Irish speaker and along with Edward Martyn ( ullira, Co.Galway) foundedCumann na bPíobairíin 1900. He performed for Pope Pius Xin 1905 and at the 1906 Oireachtas his musicaltalent earned him a gold medal. He was afounding member of the Irish Volunteers andwas in command of the 4th Battalion of theIrish Volunteers at the South Dublin Union in1916. Éamonn was one of the seven signatoriesof the Proclamation and was executed inKilmainham Gaol on 8th May 1916.

    His Last LetterIn the hours before his execution inKilmainham Jail on May 8th 1916,Éamonn Ceannt penned a poignantletter to his wife. “My dearestwife Áine”, he wrote, “not wifebut widow before these linesreach you. I am here withouthope of this world, withoutfear, calmly awaiting theend….What can I say?I die a noble deathfor Ireland’s freedom.Men and women will vie with one another toshake your dear hand. Beproud of me as I am and everwas of you.”
