Desperately Seeking….
Our computer speakers are missing. If someone borrowed them, could they please return them. Alternatively, if you have a spare pair of speakers for a com-puter could you please see Howard.
The AGM is fast approaching and will
be held on Saturday 5th September,
beginning at 10am. A light lunch will
be provided for those attending.
Please come along and support your
club and ensure that there is a quor-
um.
I am pleased to see that nominations
have already been received for all
Management Committee positions
including several from members who
have not previously been on the
Committee. It is good to have new
ideas and people wishing to contrib-
ute to the management of this great
club. Nominations for all positions
close on August 22.
The Management Committee has de-
cided that funds raised at Charity Day
this year (October 5) will be donated
to support the local Love Bites program.
Love Bites is a school-based domestic and
family violence and sexual assault preven-
tion program. It aims to increase commu-
nity awareness and understanding of these
issues. Approximately 400 students in our
local high schools will participate in the
program this year. It is run under the di-
rection of the Ballina Domestic Violence
Liaison Committee which sits under the
auspice of the Ballina Byron Family Centre.
The Committee is made up of professional
members from relevant government and
non-government organisations and pro-
grams within our region.
As this is my final contribution to the
newsletter, I would like to thank the mem-
bers of the present Management Commit-
tee for their support over the past year. It
has been a good year and I have enjoyed
my term as President. I apologise in ad-
vance for not being present for the meet-
ing as I will still be in outback WA at the
time. I wish the incoming Committee all
the best for the year ahead.

Our Directors do a fantastic job for our Club and we are always looking for other people to step up to this rewarding position. If you would like to assist by becoming a Director, please talk to Howard Jeffrey. You would be most welcome to join the team.
Pat Preston broke her wrist late June which resulted in her being admitted to Balli-na Hospital due to mobilization difficulties. Pat is now back playing and it’s good to see
her once again.
Maree Carter It’s good to see her back at
the bridge tables. Welcome Back.
Lexie Teakle is home after successful sur-gery and we look forward to seeing her at
the tables very soon.
George Clarke has had a couple more stays in St Vincent’s hospital and was not feeling well within a week of his last dis-charge. George has enjoyed the games of
Bridge that he has been able to squeeze in.

The contract is 6 ♠ by South and the
lead is J ♥. Win the opening lead and
cross to the A ♣, ruffing a ♣. Play 2
more ♥s, ruffing the third in dummy
and then ruff another ♣. Cross to the K
♠ and then ruff the final ♣. Cash AK of

East’s winning ♦ and lead away from

A word from the kitchen
Greetings from Lexie…….
Recently some Ballina BC members caught up with Lexie at a local coffee shop. She asked that we pass on her regards to the club and all those who visited and thought of her while she was re-covering in hospital. Thanks to Lyn Hoult and Lexie for the photo :-)
At a guesstimate, over 500 people enjoy a cuppa (or 2) and
a biscuit at the Bridge Club each week. And we never run
out!!! Why? Because the efficient and organised Pam Frith
buys and brings all the goodies for us which takes a big load
off the Kitchen Sub-committee A big THANK YOU to Pam
and Ian Frith. Thanks also to the lovely home cooks and
those who bring extra goodies for us to enjoy in the tea
break. Let’s face it, sometimes that is the best part of the
afternoon. You have all been very good at bringing the dirty
cups into the sink area and cleaning off any stains. So here’s
a few more helpful hints. Thanks to all those who help re-
gardless of being on the Committee
• If you are sitting-out prior to afternoon tea, you
could prepare Saos.
• Bring in your used plastic fruit/veg bags from the su-
permarket for the used teabag bin.
• If you are turning off the dishwasher at the end of the
day, please check instructions for the cleaning
cycle. Pulling the plug out is NOT the last step.
We also need new people on the kitchen sub-
committee for the new year. Please consider volun-
teering.
Cheers and thanks,
Jenny Wardley
Congratulations to Bill Powell and Marjorie Askew
who finished 5th in the recent John Hughes ANC
Swiss Pairs event in Perth. This is a national tourna-
ment with a very strong field so it’s greatly to their
credit that they finished so highly placed. They are
seen here in a recent photo with our President,
Ngaire Wills (centre).

In the previous newsletter we indicated that no-one had guessed the mystery photo. A subsequent late entry was found from Judy Carroll who correctly guessed that June Per-ry was our mystery member. Apologies for this oversight and congratulations to her. A pot plant is speeding it’s way to her as we speak.
