Baldwin Street Middle School November 10, 2017 Baldwin Street Middle School has entered the world of social media! We have so many wonderful things happening at school and hope to keep you more informed. So, please follow us on Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter in order to see a peek into our time at school. You can find us on all three sites at bmseagles49426. This week, we all got to see Mr. Arnoys and Mr. Olson get a pie in the face for our All for Books competition! Check it out! Yesterday our 8th graders presented first-drafts of their government arguments to adult experts. Our students were prepared, articulate and informed in sharing their claims and evidence to defend the stance they had taken on topics of their choice, ranging from driving laws to abortion to payment of college athletes to mandatory body cameras for police. We are grateful to all of our volunteers for providing an opportunity for our students to think deeply and practice their public speaking. Your questions and ideas will be used as students now work to research, revise and write a letter to be sent to a person who can change the laws on their ideas.

Baldwin Street Middle School has entered the world of social media!  We have so many wonderful things happening at

school and hope to keep you more informed.  So, please follow us on Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter in order to see a

peek into our time at school.  You can find us on all three sites at bmseagles49426.  This week, we all got to see Mr.

Arnoys and Mr. Olson get a pie in the face for our All for Books competition!  Check it out!

Yesterday our 8th graders presented first-drafts of their government arguments to adult experts.  Our students were

prepared, articulate and informed in sharing their claims and evidence to defend the stance they had taken on topics of

their choice, ranging from driving laws to abortion to payment of college athletes to mandatory body cameras for police.

We are grateful to all of our volunteers for providing an opportunity for our students to think deeply and practice their public

speaking.  Your questions and ideas will be used as students now work to research, revise and write a letter to be sent to a

person who can change the laws on their ideas.

PENNIES FOR PASTA

Student Council requests your help promoting our fundraiser for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. This society works

hard to stop blood cancers. We are asking for students to donate for a two week period - November 6-17. Collection boxes

and information sheets will be delivered tomorrow (Thursday) at the beginning of 6th hour.

This year’s fundraiser has two rewards.

1. The homeroom that donates the most money in their collection box will be treated to a pasta lunch by The Olive Garden. (Money collected is averaged = total money collected (coin and cash) is divided by the number of students in the

class.)

2. The homeroom that donates the most money online will be treated to a pizza party by Hungry Howie’s. (Money donated

online is averaged = total money donated (tax deductible) is divided by the number of students in the class.)

Specific Rules

• Coins and cash can be donated at any time in each homeroom.

• ONLINE GIVING: Our school's webpage: h"p://events.lls.org/pages/mi/BaldwinStreetMiddleSchool-2018 allows for online donations to be credited toward an individual homeroom teacher's fundraising page. Feel free to forward this

link to the parents of your homeroom students.

• Extra incentives ($5 added to donation box total) will be offered on specific dates listed below.

BAND BLAST:

Just a few friendly reminders from the band room!

It was great seeing many parents at conferences! If you would like a conference and did not get time with me, please feel free to contact me for a phone or email conference at your convenience.

7th and 8th grade students are reminded that JAZZ BAND continues this coming Thursday, November 16! We had a GREAT turn-out yesterday with around 45 students in attendance. It is never too late to join! Please contact Mr. Jacobs for a schedule if you need one.

Save the date for our Christmas Concert! More information will be released soon. Wednesday, December 6th @ 6:45pm.

Our Next Band Boosters meeting is next Tuesday, 11-14 at 7:00pm in the Freshmen Campus Band Room. All parents, regardless if you have middle or high school students, are welcome to attend!

Finally, we have a growing situation concerning students in the BSMS music suite after school. With the start of jazz band and winter sports, many students that are switching instruments for jazz band and swim team members are utilizing the band/orchestra suite to practice before heading to practice or home. Our school policy, unfortunately, is that students cannot be in a classroom unattended after school hours. Furthermore, I do teach lessons after school periodically during the week and utilize the music suite to do so.

If your student is going to be in the music suite after school, I would encourage all parents to remind their student that this is a privilege and should not be taken for granted. We have had students this week disrespect the space and leave the band/ensemble/choir rooms in a state of disarray. This unfortunately means myself and our 6th grade band students are at a disadvantage during first hour because we are spending class time cleaning up after 7th and 8th grade students’ messes. While I do encourage the practice time, I would like to ensure that our students treat our space with respect.  Students must have teacher permission to use the music suite after school.
