GUSTAV DÜRR (1853–1908)WALTHER DÜRR (1851–1928)

Ingenious Inventor

Gustav Dürr’s personal and practical experiences obtained during his time working for the boiler plant of Farbwerke Hoechst inspired Dürr to invent a water-tube boiler with a single header. He received several patents for his invention at home and abroad.

In order to make his idea become reality, he and his brother, Walther Dürr, purchased property in Ratingen, in the Ruhr region of Germany, and in 1883 founded Düsseldorf-Ratinger Röhrenkesselfabrik Dürr & Co.

Balcke Chimney Cooler

T IMEL INE

Innovative Protection of Natural Resources

In the beginning of the 20th century, the rising demand for electricity increased water consumption to a rate that made recooling water an economic necessity. The solution: The Balcke chimney cooler used the buoyancy of the warm air inside of the tower to draw in cold air from outside, by this means cooling the related process water. As a result of this invention, cooling ponds and graduation towers were no longer needed.

The Balcke engineers did not limit their attention to chimney coolers. They also addressed the entire cold-end system of steam power plants, including condensers and other power plant components.

PIONEERS

Pioneers from Day One

... and Progressive Development

Employment fi gures grew at a rapid pace in both companies, as did technological demands. The water-tube boiler with a single header was no longer able to achieve the required large steam outputs. Dürr met these challenges in the decades to follow with a series of new boiler designs, such as the:

– Garbe boiler

– Vertical tube boiler

– Benson boiler, still the standard technology in power plants today.

At Balcke, the natural draft cooling towers grew into unforeseeable dimensions, with over 1,400 chimney coolers sold around the world by 1904.

Dynamic Development and Versatile Application

The Garbe boiler represented the logical and technical next step of development for the Dürr single-header boiler.

In the 1930s, Dürr continued its track record of innovation with the production of the Benson boiler, a precursor of today’s large-scale steam generators.

Today, we primarily concentrate on upgrading, servicing and manufacturing boiler components.

Power Engineering with Impor

When merging, Balcke contributed the full stationary heat exchanger product range via the production site in Neubeckum, Westphalia. Balcke-Dürr was now able to provide an offering to the power plant industry for:

– conventional and– nuclear applications as well as– technologies of the future.

All our products continue to be manufactured with top effi ciency according to the latest technological standards.

15

KEY COMPONENTS

Refl ection of Progress: As the demand for energy and power plant capacity increased, natural draft cooling towers became larger and larger. While these towers started at less than 20 meters in height, the most recent cooling tower projects have already passed the 200-meter mark. At the same time, the water throughput (see graph) increased from less than 100 to over 200,000 cubic meters per hour – enough water to meet the demand of a city with a population of more than a million.

Balcke-Dürr also built what was at that time the world’s tallest dry cooling towers for the South African power plant Kendal. The towers are 165 m high and could easily house the Cologne Cathedral.

In line with this development, Balcke-Dürr also focused efforts on air-cooled condensers, which are used when water is scarce. It delivered one of the largest air-cooled condensers with 100 energy-saving and low-noise fans for the Rye House power plant in Great Britain in 1993. For this project, Balcke-Dürr received the Annual Quality Award from the international power engineering magazine PEI in 1994.

Balcke-Dürr evolved as the technological requirements increased and was able to win large parts of utility-scale power plant projects, providing

the boilers, heat exchangers and cooling technology. One example is the Clauscentrale power plant in Maasbracht, where in 1976 Balcke-Dürr

delivered Benson steam generators with an output of 2 x 640 MW and the cooling towers.

Another important asset of Balcke-Dürr has always been its highly qualifi ed power plant service, which extends far beyond inspection and repair work.

Today, it comprises the engineering of complex systems for existing power plants and providing valuable customer advantages by restoring availability as

fast as possible, extending service life and considerably improving effi ciency.

For demanding service requirements, Balcke-Dürr’s own workshops continue to ensure that premium top-quality replacement parts are promptly delivered.

Together into the Future

Successful projects would be unthinkable without customer cooperation. Without them, projects such as one of the world’s largest rotary air preheaters in Walsum, one of the largest electrostatic precipitators in Datteln, one of the largest header-type high-pressure feedwater heaters in Neurath, one of the largest moisture separator reheaters in Olkiluoto, Finland, or one of the world’s largest indirect dry cooling systems in the Kendal power plant in South Africa would not have been possible.

Furthermore, ambitious refurbishing and maintenance projects give us the chance to demonstrate our understanding of a modern and innovative service company.

ENERGY FOR THE FUTURE

A Source of Almost Unlimited Energy is waiting to be harnessed in the Earth's core as geothermal energy. Unfortu-nately it can only be tapped at specifi c locations around the world. But where it can be used, as in Iceland, it offers a powerful and environmentally friendly alternative to other energy sources. Together, we develop, plan and manuf-acture components for geothermal power plants. Close cooperation guar-antees customers that the entire system is optimized and takes full ad-vantage of the environmentally compatible energy from the Earth’s core.

FOSSIL FUELS

Effi ciency in Power Plants

The Effi ciency of Traditional Power Generation in a steam power plant in which solid, liquid or gaseous hydrocarbons are burned to produce elec-trical energy depends primarily on the temperature of the live steam and on optimized cooling at the end of the power plant process. The higher the temperature at the beginning and the lower the temperature at the end of the cycle, the higher the effi ciency. One ambitious project is the 700°C power plant technology, whose goal it is to raise the effi ciency of coal-fi red power plants above 50 %. Balcke-Dürr and SPX Cooling Technologies are both involved in this groundbreaking project. In the spirit of our slogan “Little Green Steps®,” we continue to develop highly effi cient components that considerably increase the effi ciency of existing power plants through upgrading activities.

Components for Solar Energy

The Intensity and Abundance of the Sun’s Energywas known even to the tragic Greek hero Icarus. The sun is our planet’s original and most sustainable source of energy. In some regions, it is already playing a major role in preserving our atmosphere. Balcke-Dürr is developing feedwa-ter heaters and steam generators for solar thermal power plants. In addition, SPX Cooling Technologies and Balcke-Dürr can deliver the entire cold-end system for a power plant, consisting of the cooling tower and the condenser. SPX Cooling Technologies supplies wet coolers where water is available and air-cooled condensers where water is scarce. This approach leads to optimum system solutions from a single source.
