WHAT IS PLANNING?
PLANNING
PLANNING is deciding in advance as to what is to be
performed and when, where, how and by whom it is to
be performed.
Acc to ALLEN, “ A plan is a trap laid to capture the
future”.

❖ To reduce unnecessary pressure of immediacy.
❖ To maintain a good control over all the activities
❖ To facilitate proper coordination

Perfect planning will naturally negate unnecessary
pressure.
2. Good control Planning helps in holding a good control in organizing a
tournament.
3. Coordination Proper coordination among the officials of the tournament
make the tournament successful.

A proper plan reduces the chances of mistakes and oversights.

Efficiency
With proper planning the sports officials will perform their
duties efficiently and effectively.
6. Creativity Planning help in innovative & creative thinking among sports
officials as many new ideas are brought to the table by officials
when they make a plan.

WHAT IS TOURNAMENT?
TOURNAMENT
It is that series of sports in which a team finally wins and
rest of the teams lose the matches.
Example :- Indian Premier League
ICC Cricket World Cup
FIFA World Cup
HOW TO ORGANIZE A TOURNAMENT?
To organize a sports events, various committees are
formed for systematic and smooth conduct of
competition/tournaments.

DUTIES OF COMMITTEES
COMMITTEES DUTIES
1. Publicity It announces the date, venue and sports events, provides
advance information to the institution, undertake printing etc.
2. Transportation It provides the facilities regarding transportation of various
teams t the venue of sports events or to the venue.
3. Boarding &
Lodging
This committee is responsible for making necessary
arrangements for providing accommodation & meals to the
sportsperson.
4. Decoration &
Ceremony
It is responsible to make arrangements for opening & closing
ceremony including preparing certificates, medals & Trophies.
5. Ground &
Equipment
It is responsible for preparing Grounds & arranging Equipments
related to the Games/ Sports Meet.
6. Refreshment
& Entertainment
It supplies Refreshments & Drinks to guests, officials,
competitors, etc.

7. Reception It is responsible for welcoming the Chief Guests & other
invited guests at the opening & closing ceremonies.
8. Entries &
Programmes
It sends the entry form to all the institution prior & receives
them on time. It prepare souvenirs & circulates them among
guests, officials, managers of the teams.
9. Officials It arranges all the required officials to conduct the match. Eg –
Refrees, umpires, lines man , scorers, etc.

Announcement
It is responsible to make announcements before, during(
running commentary) & after the Match.
11. First Aid It is headed by a qualified doctor. It provides first- Aid to the
injured athletes immediately.
12. Finance It is related to financial management. It prepares the budget &
maintain the account of income & expenditure.

Knockout Tournament
League or Round Robin Tournament
Combination Tournament

KNOCKOUT TOURNAMENT
In this type of tournament a team which is once defeated
, automatically gets eliminated from the tournament.
Only the winning teams continue in the tournament .
Formula to calculate no. of matches N-1
If total 7 teams are their in a tournament then 7-1= 6
matches will be played.
ADVANTAGES & DISADVANTAGES
ADVANTAGES
Less time, less money, less officials, enhances standard of
sports
DISADVANTAGES
Chances of elimination of good teams in Ist & IInd round
Maximum chances of weak teams to enter in to final rounds
Spectators may not have enough interest in the final match
LEAGUE OR ROUND ROBIN
TOURNAMENT
This tournament is also called Berger system. In this
tournament each team plays with every other team once .
Types of league tournament
1. Single league tournament
2. Double league tournament
SINGLE LEAGUE TOURNAMENT
In this tournament each team plays with every other team
once if it is a single league tournament.
Formula to calculate no. of matches : N(N-1)/2
Here N means No. of teams.
Example – If 7 teams are playing then 7(7-1)/2 = 7(6)/2
42/2= 21 matches.
DOUBLE LEAGUE TOURNAMENT
In this tournament each team plays with every other team
twice if it is a double league tournament.
Formula- N(N-1)
Example – If 7 teams are their then 7(7-1)= 7*6=42
matches.
ADVANTAGES & DISADVANTAGES
ADVANTAGES
Every team plays with every other team irrespective of victory or
defeat.
it is the best type of tournament because it provides maximum
number of opportunities to the teams to display their best
performance.
DISADVANTAGES
More time, More money, More officials, More Grounds are
required to conduct the tournament.
COMBINATION TOURNAMENT
Combination tournaments are conducted when the
matches are to be played on group basis or zonal basis.
Example - IPL combination of League cum Knockout
tournament.

CHALLENGE TOURNAMENT
Challenge tournament are those tournament in which the low
Ranked players can directly challenge the High Ranked player for
a match.
If a Low Ranker player won the match over High Ranker player
then their rankings will swap automatically.
Example- WWE challenge
Badminton- A IV Rank Player can challenge the first Rank player.
If IV Rank player won the challenge or match over first Rank
player then their Rankings will swap automatically.
INTRAMURAL
INTRAMURALS - It is derived from the Latin words
Intra and muralis. Intra means within & muralis means
wall.
The activities that are performed within the walls of the
institution or a school is known as Intramurals.

ORIGIN OF INTRAMURALS•First time in U.S.A. the intramural of baseball was organized in 1864
•After that in the beginning of 20th century some progressive physical
education teachers showed interest in intramurals and they realized that
through intramurals, the more extensive development of physical education
can be done.
•In 1925 every high school started the mission to establish intramural
department in U.S.A.
SIGNIFICANCE FOR INTRAMURALS
1. Intramurals are very essential for physical, mental, emotional and social
development of students.
2. These programmes also lay stress on moral and ethical values of students.
3. Intramurals are necessary for the development of health of children.
4. These programmes are also essential to calm down the fighting instinct of
children.
5. These programmes refresh the children and make them agile.
6. Intramurals provide maximum recreation to the students.
7. Intramurals provide ample opportunities to the students to participate in
games and sports .
8. Intramurals are also essential for developing the leadership qualities among
the students.

COMPETITION.
1. Major games – Volleyball, Hockey ,cricket, Basketball, Kabaddi, swimming, athletics, cycling, wrestling, lawn tennis, football, softball etc.
2. Minor games – Shuttle runs, Kho-kho, circle game, tag game, roller skating, Potato race, sack race & three legged race etc.
3. Rhythmic- Lazium, dumb bell, marching, folk dance, group dance, solo dance, Mass p.t.
& rhythmic gymnastic etc.
4.Creative activities - Painting, drawing , Sculpture & making models.
5.Combative activities- Boxing, judo, Taekwondo, judo, karate, etc.
EXTRAMURALS
The word Extramurals is derived from the Latin words ‘Extra’
and ‘Muralis’. Extra means outside and Muralis means wall. It
means that the activities which are performed outside the walls of
an institution or school.
SIGNIFICANCE OF EXTRAMURAL
COMPETITION
1. Provide opportunities to school to show their sports
capabilities.
2. For enhancing the standard of sports performance.
3. Provide appropriate knowledge of sports techniques.
4. For making and implementing the programmes of physical
education more effectively.
5. Improve the opportunities to participate in sports.
OBJECTIVES OF EXTRAMURALS
1. To improve the standard of sports.
2. To provide experience to students.
3. To develop sportsmanship and fraternity.
4. To broaden the base of sports.
5. To provide the knowledge of new rules and advance technique.

MARATHONS FOR A CAUSE
SPECIFIC SPORTS PROGRAMMES
Health Runs – Health runs are organized by health department, sports department or social organizations. Usually their purpose is to ameliorate the standard of health in a country along with the raising of fund for the charity.
Run for fun – Run for fun is also 0rgainse with an objective to spread the message among the masses to remain healthy and fit. It may be organized to motivate the people to exercise regularly and stay healthy. It is more related to have fun and frolic during running.
Run for unity – It is organized with a specific purpose i.e. to show unity and peace among the people of different religions. Its purpose is national and international integration.
Run for specific causes – Run for specific cause is the run which is related to a good and noble cause. Its main purpose is to raise the funds for specific cause but the cause should be noble.
