Bako Wales would like to congratulate Paul Noakes’Bakery and staff for reaching such a prestigiouslandmark of 100 years in business.

Established in 1914 by Paul’s Grandparents, thebusiness originally consisted of two shops, inGorseinon and Pontardulais respectively. Having fourchildren, the Noakes family then decided to move intoa premises in Pontarddulais, affording additionalroom and the added benefit of a garden.

In 1939 Paul’s Grandfather H.A. Noakes passed awayand Paul’s Grandmother S.A. Noakes steered thebusiness through the difficult war years, but sadlydied in 1945. Returning from Service in the Army at

the end of the war, Paul’s father L. Noakes tookoverall control of the business and in 1947 Paul wasborn.

Over the next half century Father and Son developedand expanded the business, wholesaling theirproducts to regional fellow bakers. It was around thistime that the family’s long relationship with the WelshBakers’ Buying Group was established, Paul’s Fatherbeing one of the Founder Members over 50 Years ago.Their bakery was one of the first Frozen Pie Suppliersto the WBBG; now known as Bako Wales. Paul waselected to the Board of Directors and is currently thelongest serving Director in tandem with being a mostvalued and respected customer.

Paul Noakes’ Bakery is a fine example of a High StreetIndependent Bakery that has survived the GreatDepression, the 2nd World War and continues todefend is position against the influx and everincreasing dominance of the retailer.

We wish Paul and his team all the success for the next100 years of baking whilst we thank him for hiscustom and hope to maintain his presence on theBoard of Bako Wales for many years to come.

Dear Customer,

In order to briefly summarise the current main trends in thecommodities markets we have outlined some of the key “moversand shakers”. We are able to provide you with additional detailabout any of these upon request through our Sales, Telesales orPurchasing Depts.

Soft Commodities - Sugar prices increased with global demandforecast to increase 2% year on year to 170.5 million tonnes,mainly driven by higher demand from Asia. Cocoa bean prices felldespite concerns over transportation in West Africa, productionforecast remain 10% up year on year at 43 million tonnes in2013/14. Cocoa butter has fallen 11%, however, prices for CocoaPowder have risen by 6%.

Fats and Oils - Soyabean oil prices continued to fall inRotterdam as good weather during the growing period resultedin soyabean production increasing 9% year on year to 311million tonnes in 2014/15. Palm oil and palm kernel oil priceswere up in Malaysia 8% while rapeseed oil prices rose inRotterdam by 3%. Good general supply prospects are keepingprices stable overall. Sunflower oil prices rose2% as globalproduction is expected to fall 1% year on year in 2014/15.Coconut oil prices fell in Rotterdam 2% and extra Virgin Oil pricesfell in Spain 2%.

Wheat - Global wheat prices have increased in recent weeks afterglobal consumption for 2104/15 has been revised up 1% fromlast month’s forecast to 714.1 million tonnes causing MillingWheat prices to increase in Paris by 9%.

Dairy - EU milk production continues to seasonally declinealthough remains up year on year. EU butter prices fell 3%,however UK Skim Milk powder prices increased by 9%.Cheddar cheese prices dropped in the UK by 8% and EU Egg pricesincreased 3%.

Ingredients - With smaller crop this year, US Almond prices rose15% in the EU. Turkish hazelnuts have fallen 2% and still remainin short supply. Turkish dried apricots increased by 10% onreduced supply as did sultanas mainly due to some qualityconcerns on new crop. US raisins were unchanged.

Energy - Prices for Brent crude oil continued to fall in London by9% due to slow demand and increasing supply driven by higherOPEC production. Diesel prices fell in Europe by 6% in line withCrude Oil Prices.
