While doing college ministry in Jonesboro, we started to dream with two other couples about church planting. We would meet to pray in the early morning, watch documentaries of others who had gone before us and started to feel this pull that we needed to be trained

We also desperately needed a community and a tribe to walk with. JR felt like we were supposed to go to Waco, Texas and meet with a church planting movement called Antioch Ministries International. He had been mentored by a man named Pat Murphy who worked at this church while he went to Seminary.

After encountering their leaders, their humble hearts and their passion for Jesus, we knew Waco would be the next stop on our journey to starting a church.

We moved in August of 2012 to start Antioch Discipleship School. A little ways into the school year, we felt led by the Lord to lay down every expectation of where, when, how, and with who we would be planting a church, and wait on His leadership in the process.

It wasn’t long after that we sensed God leading us towards Salt Lake City, Utah. We soon learned that our friends and teammates, Noland and Sara Gilmore, had sensed

God speaking the same thing, so we planned a trip that summer to check it out. We re-turned knowing undoubtedly that this was the place God was inviting us into, and for the last 18 months we have been preparing by building a team and going through Antioch’s Church Planting School.

God has been so faithful to lead our every move and write our story far better than we ever could have imagined or written ourselves. We can’t wait for all that our next chapter in Utah holds, and we are so grateful to get to invite you in to be a part of it.

Antioch Ministries international (AMI) is a non-profit church-planting organiza-tion that launches and supports church-planting movements all over the world. In the past 25 years, AMI has planted churches all over the U.S. and around the world, and today tens of thousands of people have come to know Christ.

AMI’s passion is to see the Church advance the Kingdom of God around the world. Each of Antioch’s church-planting teams is trained and sent out from the Antioch base in Waco, Texas, or from another Antioch church plant.

When teams are sent into the field, they operate as independent churches with a board of directors. However, AMI supports church plants every step of the way through continued guidance, ongoing pastoral support and recurring training and development.

The vision doesn’t stop with the church plants AMI sends out. The dream of AMI is for each of its church plants to become a church-planting movement that influ-ences thousands of people through the power and work of the Holy Spirit. Our teams are dedicated to training locals to reach their people and lead their own movements. As these movements grow, we believe the number of unengaged and unreached people groups will decrease.

The bottom line for why we’re going to Salt Lake City is this: there’s a need, and we felt invited by God to join Him in what He is doing there.

Only 2.2 percent of Salt Lake City’s population is affiliated with an evangelical church, and there is one evangelical church for every 10,000 people in Salt Lake City. Founded by the Mormon church, the state of Utah as a whole has been known traditionally as “the Mormon state.” Salt Lake City, however, is now less than 50% Mormon for the first time ever.

What does this mean for us? Quite literally, the harvest is plentiful and the work-ers are few. When we visited Salt Lake in the summer of 2013, we met with a handful of pastors who all expressed the same thing: We need more workers. Please come.

We walked away from that trip feeling a “Mordecai to Esther” sort of invitation and challenge from God. It was clear that He was on the move in Salt Lake City, and that revival would come whether we showed up to be a part of it or not. But who knows if we’ve been brought into His kingdom for such a time as this?

Our God is a rebuilder of ruined cities, a way-maker in the wilderness and a healer of brokenness. We are so convinced that He intends to bring newness of life in Salt Lake City in an unprecedented way, and your partnership in the process is equally as important as our willingness to go.

We’re so thankful for the body of Christ, and that we weren’t made to do this alone. We feel constantly encouraged by the people God has put around us to hold up our arms and stand in the gap on our behalf. You have already invested in our lives and our ministry greatly.
