INNER WORLDS BAIBA SKRIDE GREAT PERFORMERS 2016 23 AUGUST 2016, ELISABETH MURDOCH HALL Latvia’s angel of the violin Baiba Skride will grace the Melbourne Recital Centre in August with her intuitive renditions of Mozart, Brahms and Shostakovich. Known for her natural affinity with the classics, Skride has been described as having the ability to ‘play everything from Mozart to Shostakovich and make it seem like it was written for her.’ “I’ve always found her performances to be full of joy and her easy, natural manner on stage indicates an artist who revels in the beauty and power of the recital platform,” said Head of Artistic Planning Marshall McGuire. Skide’s unexpected selection for this recital exposes the dark side of the great composers with Mozart’s short sonata and it’s melancholy closing dance, Schuman’s fantasy pieces and Brahm’s irresolute Sonata. They all lead up to Shostakovich’s late violin sonata with its uncompromising qualities all played on her 1734 Stradivarius. “The stage is where my inspiration comes from,” Skride said. In a performance “there are many things which come together – the right repertoire, congenial partners, the orchestra. There are lots of pieces which need to fit, but what matters to me most is simply giving everything you have in that very moment,” she said. “The moment you start playing, you immediately find yourself some place else.” Skride has played with the world’s best including the Berlin and London Philharmonic’s and is the artist in residence at the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. The Hamburg based musician will bring her music to Melbourne audiences in a charming performance alongside associate artist pianist Daniel de Borah. Their performance will appeal to anyone who enjoys classical music or wants to feel consumed by the beauty and melancholy of the violin.
