I/ IntroductionNowadays, the development of science, technology and economy and the

tendency of globalization have brought about a great demand of intercommunicating. In order to meet this demand, English has become an international language. Almost everyone need to learn English. However, many people get trouble in finding the suitable course to pursuit, especially Vietnamese workers whose manager is foreigner. To satisfy their expectation, we plan a special course with some particular methods for them.

II/ Reasons

1. Reasons for Vietnamese workers to learn English

Page 2: Bai Ghp Hoan Chinh

If they can speak English, they will be able to communicate with their boss or their foreign co-workers without translators. When the boss asks them something, they can understand what their boss wants them to do.

In some cases, they can make suggestions, requirements or even complaints to their boss. Moreover, speaking English fluently offers them opportunity to make more friends.

They can chat with their boss in their free time to know more about his family and culture of their country.

Moreover, due to the day – today conservation with the boss, Vietnamese workers can get valuable experiences. Therefore, this is an important element to work effectively and reach the highest point in career.

Besides, Vietnamese workers is easy to get promoted thank to their good English. In real life, it is an indispensable factor for workers to be appreciated. They also help their colleague to communicate with the boss. They can find another job with higher – salary, or even go abroad for

work and make more money in case they are made redundant. Good English helps them easily to find out a new job with suitable salary. If they have talent for foreign language, they can try other jobs such as

translators, tourist guide …., these jobs are comfortable in comparison with workers. Mastering English offers them a good chance to settle down in any

countries in Europe or the United Kingdom, which is impossible without really good English. If you study English , you can go on a travel without any translator ,

especially you can communicate with every one wherever you are .You feel comfortable and free to go anywhere with English . English is very important, it is the language of science. To excel in

science you need to know English. Learning English will be useful if you want to conduct any research in near future.

2. Reasons for choosing workers as the object in our research Workers have fixed timetable because they work in eight-hour shifts: night

shifts or day shifts. It’s easy for us to make specific plans for arranging and managing classes.

Due to the fact that more and more companies from Europe or US spend considerable investments in Vietnamese industry, workers are aware of the importance of foreign language to their work (getting high-paying job, promotion…) and it’s obvious that they will put more effort into learning English.

They get salary monthly so they can afford to take an English course which brings them many benefits.

A huge of foreign-owned company considers Vietnam as a potential job market and they tend to build a lot of new factories. However, there is a significantly high rate of unemployment because of not only the lack of technical knowledge but also the linguistic limitation. Teaching workers English makes a considerable contribution to raising quality for labor force.

III/ How to motivate workers

1. Describing learners

Almost workers are adult, so they can engage with abstract thought. Therefore, we cannot rely completely on activities though these may be useful in some certain cases.

They have many life experiences which allow teachers to use a wide range of activities with them.

They have specific goals and their own set patterns of learning, they are able to sustain a level of motivation.

They tend to be more disciplined than some teenagers and ready to struggle on boredom and confusion.

Page 4: Bai Ghp Hoan Chinh

However:

Their previous learning experiences make them uncomfortable with unfamiliar teaching patterns.

Their previous failure or criticism at school make them anxious and under – confident about learning a language.

Their intellectual powers may be diminishing with age, they also find it difficult to maintain their creativity and sense of generativity.

2. The ways to motivate

To motivate workers learning English, we should make two kinds of motivation: long- term and short- term. The combination of two kinds will make the project more effective.

We need to combine lessons with games or activities to help them pay more attention as well as involving students in more indirect learning through reading, listening, and communicative speaking and writing in order to attract them to the topics. We need to provide them with a variety of subjects and exercises to keep them engaged.

A positive environment plays an important role in having a successful course. We can decorate classrooms with visual materials or change the atmosphere by using music. When students walk into an attractive classroom at the beginning of the course, they feel more encouraging to take all lessons, and free from hard work.

There is no need to teach leaners from basic to intricate grammar and vocabulary. We just need to organize practical lessons which are easy to achieve in short-term distance.

To motivate the workers, one effective way is that you tell them how beneficial studying English is. In fact, mastering English brings them a lot of benefits and it is worth considering.

We should create favorable condition so that workers can join in class. The acceptable fee- paying school is very attractive to them. Workers wish to go to English center but they can’t afford to pay high fees. Therefore, offering acceptable fee is one effective way to motivate learning English.

Page 5: Bai Ghp Hoan Chinh

Workers have deep respect for the boss, encouragement from him is very important, we can contact with the boss to motivate them learning English.

IV/What workers should learnThe main goal when we conduct the course is that the workers can make simple conversation. Therefore, teaching sounds system is unavoidable. Knowledge of sounds system helps them to pronounce exactly and listen to other people.

Also, we should teach them basic grammar, which enables them to make meaningful sentences and understand what other people want to talk to them

Vocabulary is considered as one of the most important elements in communicating. To workers in our course, there are some certain topics related to their work and daily life, which we surely involve in the curriculum.

Example:

Name of many kinds of machine, tools, etc. Name of emergencies, unexpected accidents during the time they work in

the factories. Name of technical mistakes: running out of petrol, mistake related to

software. Personal issues: making friends, making complaints and suggestions.

Moreover, to reach our goals, we should combine theories with practice. Thank to activities, learners can improve their communicative skill.

V/MethodsEnglish is the international language, especially in the recent years when globalization becomes the trend. Experts do a large number of researches on language teaching methodology, namely: grammar translation method, audio-lingual method, communicative approach, and humanistic approaches.

Page 6: Bai Ghp Hoan Chinh

However, methods have their own advantages and disadvantages, which we have to carefully consider and base on characteristics of learners to choose the best.

We will carry out the 5-month course so that learners can communicate at pre-intermediate level. We mainly use audio-lingual method with some following reasons:

We set the target that learners can interact with their employer, lay the foundation for them to go further in language field. Moreover, audio-lingual method is mainly attached to pronunciation.

We teach them in short time, so the combination between theories and practice is necessary. Workers do not have much time for learning vocabulary, with this method, vocabulary is strictly limited and learned in context.

English does not play a vital role for the workers, learners expect to put theories into practice immediately. They find it easy to forget, even get bored with theories. Real context makes them remember easier and feel more motivated. The audio-lingual method meets their needs because with this method, teacher creates relaxing, friendly atmosphere.

Due to habit formation, learners speak English in natural way instead of wasting time learning grammar rules.

Example: Teacher gives leaners a simple conversation and they follow below steps

Observations Principles1. The teacher introduces a conversation and tells what he is going to and what the students should do.

2. The teacher uses pictures, gestures and props to act out the conversation.

3. The teacher repeats the conversation in the same manner.

New materials (new words, grammar structures, pronunciation and intonation) are presented in dialogue form.

The teacher completely uses English. Teacher is a language model.

Learners try to listen to the conversation and imitate in their mind.

Page 7: Bai Ghp Hoan Chinh

4. Ask the student to repeat the conversation.

5. The teacher listens to the students, and gives feedback if students make a mistake.

6. The teacher and student practice the dialogue by roleplaying it.

7. The teacher uses single-slot substitution drill. He says the whole sentence with each substitution, then he gives the substitution phrase only, the student says the whole sentence.

8. Teacher gives positive feedback, even some gifts (notebook, pen…..)

9. Teacher conducts transformation and asks some question related to the conversation.

10. Teacher gives learners a transcript at the conversation. Then teacher asks learners to listen and repeat each line of the conversation.

The more we repeat something, the easier we remember them, habit formation makes language more natural.

To prevent learners from making errors.

To improve communicative skill such as listening and speaking skills.

To help learners to study grammar rules naturally.

Make learners feel more encouraging.

The purpose of pattern practice is to help learners to form pattern using habits.

Practicing to speak a language is more important than just reading a written form.

As far as we concerned, workers aged from 18-35 experienced the traditional method-grammar translation method. Therefore, at the beginning of the course, we are supposed to use that method for two following reasons: firstly, they find it easier to adapt the new method gradually, an abrupt change make them feel uncomfortable and quite disappointed. Secondly, the grammar translation is particular meaning to the beginners, this method allows teachers to provide

Page 8: Bai Ghp Hoan Chinh

learners with new words’ full meaning because, sometimes gestures, pictures cannot help teachers to explain the meaning of the new words completely. Teachers use this method in necessary cases.

Example: Teachers have difficulty in explaining “pass away” and “die” to learners because of the same core meaning. The easiest way is that teachers use Vietnamese to interpret the different meaning between these words. Furthermore, learners cannot distinguish 2 words if teachers speak in English.

When learners get the higher-level, the change in language teaching method is very necessary, which aims at creating a new motivation to learn more effectively. We really want to establish the close relationships between learners and learners or even learners and teachers by interacting with each other. As a result, we propose to use the communicative approach. Because of the fact that structures and vocabulary are important but inadequate for communication in the target language. Learners must be able to apply the knowledge (forms, meanings, functions) in negotiating meaning. It is through the interaction between speakers and listeners.

Example: Communicating with partners (make some simple conversations) helps learners to improve their communicative skill, also remind them of vocabulary and grammar rules. With this method, we create a friendly and relaxing atmosphere so that learners study more efficiently.

We hope that the combination between these methods helps us to achieve our goals and this plan will be possible to conduct in real life.
