Dear Parents and Carers,

Concerns regarding lateness ~ As a

school we are concerned about a

number of children who are arriving

late to school every day. Lateness

has a very negative impact on your

child’s learning as well as disrupting

the learning of other children in the

class. Mr Simon Jones, our

education welfare officer, is

currently monitoring ‘lateness’,

children must arrive for registration

at 8:50 am, lessons begin at 9 am.

Children who arrive late must report

to their teacher and their reason

for their lateness will be recorded.

Children who arrive after 9.15am

are recorded as an unauthorised

absence. The amount of time lost

through their lateness is recorded in

the register.

Year 4 News ~ This week in Year 4 we have re-created a skeleton with black

Year 6 News ~ Last week, the children competed in their

first Costain league matches in netball and rugby. The boys

The girls won their first netball match with some great shooting from Emma and Martha

led by their captain Bethany McI; what a great start! In class, we have continued to find

out more about the Tudors by using our Numeracy skills to answer questions about a Tudor

time line. We have also carried out our first peer teaching activity which was great fun

and a really interesting way to learn. This week,

we have been revising multiplication and using

multiplication to solve problems involving Roman

Numerals. In English, we have written non-

chronological reports about Henry VIII. These

have formed part of our Tudor display in class.

Year 1 News ~ This week we have been working hard to learn

our Harvest song, 'In My Trolley.' The song is about all the

things we are fortunate to have in our supermarkets and even

more fortunate to be able to put in our trolley and take home to

our cupboards. We talked about all the

foods in our song and if we liked eating

them. We put pictures of the food

onto the interactive whiteboard and learned the Welsh words for

them. We have enjoyed looking at all the Autumn things that the

children have collected and have been busy sorting and counting

them in our Autumn tuff spot.

Nursery News ~ This week in the Nursery we have had lots of fun starting to learn about

Autumn. We enjoyed performing our songs in our harvest assembly.

We sang ‘Big Red Combine Harvester’ and ‘Under the Harvest Moon’.

We enjoyed singing together on the stage and joining in with the

actions.

We have enjoyed talking about the signs of Autumn and colouring and

painting Autumn pictures. We are looking forward to visiting the park

next week to collect lots of Autumn objects. As the weather is

getting colder, we made healthy vegetable soup this week. We helped

to cut carrots, potatoes, swede and onions and add them to our soup.

We especially enjoyed tasting the different vegetables in our soup.

Bilingualism ~ This year as part of our continued drive to improve and maintain standards

in Baglan Primary School, we are looking at the development of Welsh and bilingualism;

dwyieithrwydd. As part of this the children will be:

• discussing the weather;

• using Welsh commands in and around the school;

• using Welsh in as many different subject areas where appropriate;

• encouraged to use Welsh in the dining hall, playground and when sending messages;

• rewarded for their use of Welsh with bilingual certifcates;

• be able to attend the Welsh clubs Urdd (different age groups at different times

throughout the year).
