Reviewit Magazine,  December 2012 Interview with Mark Badgley and James Mischka 

Paige Moore  Mark Badgley and James Mischka were in Houston presenting a fashion show that benefitted “Recipe for Success,” an organization combatting childhood obesity. They sat down with Reviewit Magazine before the show and shared their design philosophies, what they think about Houston, and why today’s designers are better off than they were when they got their start thirty years ago.  Reviewit: So, gentlemen. What’s inspiring you these days? Where are you taking us, the women who will be wearing your clothes?  Mark: Good question!   James: Yes, it’s funny because the clothes that are out now were inspired a long time ago. Now we’re two seasons ahead...  Mark: The (2013) resort collection was actually inspired by Long Island where we’ve been living­ we were doing “Great Gatsby” style and incidentally it was the same time they were filming the remake.  James: A complete coincidence!  Reviewit: So all very glamourous, very 1920’s...  Mark and James: Glamorous, very Art Deco, very old Hollywood.   Mark: Basically we’re dressing the women who, even though they live in casual times and have a certain “uniform” they wear by day, they really want to go for it at night!  James: (interjecting) The women who have the fantasy of taking three hours to get dressed, but the reality is that they’re throwing something into a pocketbook and changing in a bathroom stall.   Mark: We put out old world quality with new world technology. We really pride ourselves in most of our dresses being practically weightless. Women don’t want anything heavy so we strive for the one pinky rule.  Reviewit: And that is?  Mark: You should be able to lift the hanger with one pinky!   James: Sometimes it takes two pinkies.   Reviewit: James, you went to Rice University for Biomedical engineering. What’s your take on Houston?   James: We love Houston. It’s a city that thrives on culture.   Reviewit: So true! But we’re the only ones that know that...  

(Mark and James in agreement) No, Houston is wonderful. There’s such good things happening everywhere here. More than, well, just about anywhere!  Reviewit: The two of you met at Parsons Design School in New York, and James I know you have a background in Art History...  (Mark in James in unison) We both do!  Reviewit: So art must have a lot of influence on your designs.  (In unison again) Oh yes!  Mark to James: Wasn’t it the dress we did for Beyonce’s sister, the M.C. Escher inspired dress?  James: (nods in agreement.)   Mark: Art is a constant reference. I love looking at the portraits of Sargent­ those gorgeous décolleté necklines.  James: We incorporate it into everything, even our T­shirts. We have glamourous T­shirts. (laughs.)  Reviewit: With such an opulent style, have you felt the impact of the recession? Has it affected the way you approach the market?  James: We’ve diversified. We came up with Mark + James, our contemporary collection­ still not your typical sportswear but more approachable in cost.   Mark: There was definitely a day that you didn’t have to worry about price point but now...  James: You had a woman that wore the $500 dress and the one that wore the $5000 dress: now the same woman wears both. There’s such a blur.  Reviewit: And what of starting as designers in such times? I understand the two of you had some help from your families when you got started: what about a young designer whose family has nothing to offer and there’s nothing coming from anywhere?  (Both looking at each other doubtfully) Mark: We got a little bit of help.  James: It wasn’t even close to enough.  Mark: It never is.  James: And when we got started, there was a bad recession as well. To make it we had several things going at the same time. We designed houses, worked for other people, other designers...  James: Really it’s a much better time for designers. The fashion world used to be so established.  Mark: Bill Blass, Carolina Herrera, Oscar De La Renta...  

James: (laughing) The gang of six.  Mark: Exactly.  James: Now it’s so open to newness. So welcoming. We didn’t have that!  Mark: There’s really never a “good” time to start, when you want to be a designer. If you have the passion, if you have a vision, jump into it.  Reviewit: Well said! And now I'm going to go "jump" into my seat and watch your fabulous fashion show. Thank you so much to the both of you. Mark and James: Our pleasure! See you at the show!
