Coach relishes opportunity to work, learn from both genders

For the last four years I have been coaching girls for Brookfield Central High School and boys for Milwaukee Sting Volleyball Club. Without fail the most common question I get asked during the season is, “which do you like better?”
To the surprise of most parents, my answer is both. I always joke that by the time high school sea-son is over, I’m ready to coach the boys, and by the club season is wrapping up I’m ready to go back to girls.
One of the primary differences between the two is the development of volleyball skills. By age 14, most girls are already four years into their training. For the most part, we’re lucky if boys have one year of club under their belt by the time they’re 14. I think this early on training is a big contributor to

Minn.John Nelson of the Badger Re-
gion will be presented the Junior Outstanding Clinician award.
Nelson, who resides (ironi-cally) in Nelson, Wis., became a Junior National referee in 1998.
He is also an IMPACT certified member who has been a key edu-cator in leading junior work crew clinics in northwest Wisconsin for the past decade.
He is also heavily involved in officiating with the Wisconsin Volleyball Conference (college club). And most importantly, he’s all about doing it right.
“We are happy to announce the recipients of the Junior Assembly Leadership Service Awards,” said Chris Clauss, chair of USA Vol-leyball Recognition and Award Commission and the Junior Assembly Leadership Awards. “We applaud their service and contributions to the junior vol-leyball community.”

Valley Region has been selected to receive the Junior Outstanding Program Director award. Sam Nimpchaimanatham of the Gulf Coast Region and Bethani Hinche-rick of the Great Lakes Region have been chosen to receive the Junior Outstanding Male and Female Coach awards, respectively.
Kathy Ets-Hokin of the Flor-ida Region will be presented the Junior Outstanding Parent award.

We wanted to take a moment to reach out and thank everyone for their understanding for the circumstances surrounding the COVID-19 and event cancellations and suspensions.
While these unprecedented actions have upset some, and many are un-derstandably disappointed, volleyball is family, and we wanted to act in the best interests of our family. We are continuing to actively monitor recommendations from local, state and national governing bodies as well as work with our partners at Visit Milwaukee and the Wisconsin Center to see if there are additional dates at the convention center that can host the Badger Region Championships, but this is a very complicated event logistically.
As you’re aware, circumstances are changing by the hour (or less) and our staff is working hard to stay on top of
everything. We have created a page on our website for the status of Badger Region events planned for the coming days and months, and this page will be updated with new information as it becomes available.
We encourage everyone who doesn’t know what to do with this unexpect-ed downtime to take a look at our online educational information from our partners at the AVCA, The Art of Coaching Volleyball and USA Volley-ball Referee Training websites.

the girl’s game being so techni-cally sound, while the boys’ game is full of athleticism and instinct. I remember being incredibly frustrated during one of my first practices with the boys, as their serve receive form was inconsis-tent, which lead to inconsistent results. In talking with the head coach, it didn’t take long to click that the boys get by in volleyball with their athleticism instead of their form. I’m not saying there isn’t a place for form and simplicity in the boy’s game, but that they don’t realize it until they’re older. Once I realized this, I think I became more tolerant and patient with boys than girls, primarily because even if they didn’t master a technique, they’re athleticism could get them pretty close to the same end result.
I think the technique differenc-es is something that is becoming more fluid between both genders. Earlier this year Gold Medal Squared came and put on a clinic for all Milwaukee Sting coaches. As a result of that clinic the boys’
program started putting a much stronger emphasis on teaching the efficient, simple fundamen-tals that the girls’ program has focused on for years. On the contrary, ever since I started coaching boys, I’ve been coaching my female athletes to just make a move for the ball, instead of over-analyzing the exact technique or move to make. I think in a perfect volleyball world, there’s a balance of simple movements and athletic plays. For example, middle mid-dle defense puts your defender in the place where statistically the most balls go. This doesn’t mean that you’re just going to give up on the balls that go elsewhere, but that you’ll need to make an athletic move to try to get there. I can’t wait to see how this balance of technique and athleticism continues to equalize.
Another major difference between girls and boys is the dif-ferent offensive systems that they use (4, hut, shoot, go, 5, 9, a, b, c, etc…). My first year of coaching club was with girls at Milwaukee Sting, and that year I was lucky enough that both Brookfield
Central and Sting used the same systems, so it wasn’t until my first year of boys that my eyes were really opened to how vast the differences are. From then on, every switch between boys and girls, this is the biggest challenge that I encounter.
Finally, the funniest difference for me, is the smells. Growing up a volleyball player I became immune to how bad kneepads smelt. Only once in a blue moon do I actually get a whiff of some really smelly kneepads during high school season. Knee pads aren’t quite as popular for boys as they are for girls, but let’s just say there are other smells that are more prevalent for boys. I’d call this one a wash, there’s no escaping some stink while you’re a coach!
Despite the differences that come with coaching both boys and girls, I wouldn’t trade it for the world. Volleyball athletes are still volleyball athletes, regardless of their gender, and as a coach you’re put in a position of trust, to help mold the lives of 10-14 kids at a given time. You’re trusted to help develop their volleyball skills, be
a good role model for them, and teach them life lessons. Despite the differences, I would absolutely recommend that anyone who has the opportunity to coach both gen-ders, do so. Most coaches I suggest that to, just laugh, and I too think I would be laughing if I never tried. My thoughts are that if you feel like you’re a good coach for one gender, you can certainly apply the skills I mentioned above to another gen-der. As coaches rarely do we stop learning, so learning differences in the boys game vs the girls game is just another area to grow.
I think coaching both genders helps me in my role on the board as I’m constantly thinking about the effect adding or changing a rule or policy would have on both genders. I’m also lucky to have two other women on staff at Milwaukee Sting (shout out to Coral and Adriane), who are in the same boat as me. It’s really refreshing and helpful to have other coaches, going through the same unique experiences as you are. that numbers are not contrasting enough with the dominant color of the jersey or if a jersey is not contrasting for libero purposes.

The goal of this initiative is to help our Ref Chair not have to write any waivers for
jerseys, especially for teams who are com-peting at national qualifier and national championship events.

An early March rules meeting has resulted in a few rule clarifica-tions and a few new rule interpre-tations. Those include:
Length of shortsOur definition of shorts is
anything that stops above the knee. If the style of shorts (EX: spandex, gym shorts, running shorts, etc.) is the same, the length of those shorts does not matter. We will allow different length of shorts provided the style is still the same.
Shorts vs. pantsWe are not allowing a mix of
shorts and pants unless the player or team has a waiver. Players/teams can get a waiver from their Region ref chair for in-region events, and
they can get a waiver from the USAV Indoor Rules Interpreter for National events.
Sport Court rule
When playing on a portable court surface or in a defined playing area, it is all about being in contact with the playing area. If the player jumps, they must take off from the playing area and land in/on the playing surface before they can continue off/out of the playing area. Referees must judge that the player was in contact with the playing surface or that they jumped from the playing surface and landed on the playing surface. The location of the ball above/not
above the playing area is not rele-vant; it is the player’s location.
Headphones are not jewelry
Wireless headphones are not considered jewelry under USAV rules. We allow juniors to wear jewelry during warm-ups and the match if the jewelry does not pres-ent a safety hazard, but this does not apply to headphones. Referees should ask players to remove head-phones, including during official warm-ups and work assignments.
FacemasksWhile there is nothing in the
rules specifically regarding face-masks (see example below), this falls under rule USAV 4.5.1. If the referee feels it is safe to wear, they should allow it. In rare situations,
the mask may need to be padded. No waiver is needed. It is protective gear for the safety of the player.
Switching sidesAt the recent Rules Commission
meeting, a new technique was approved regarding the change of courts between non-deciding sets. At the end of a non-deciding set (set 1 for example), the 1st referee will still use the change of courts signal, but THE TEAMS DO NOT HAVE TO GO AROUND THE COURT. THEY WILL SWITCH IN FRONT OF THE SCORERS TABLE. Same switch as before the deciding set if the teams choose to switch sides. Players on the ‘B’ side of the court are no longer required to go around the 1st referee’s stand. Both teams can return to their bench and gather their belongings before switching to their new bench by crossing in front of the scorer table.

The 2020 USA Masters Games will take place in Grand Rapids, Mich., in the summer of 2020.
Dates for the volleyball compe-titions have not been announced, but according to the website will be announced soon.
The full slate of games will take place June 19-28.
The games are open to any ath-lete 21 and over. In recent years, over 2,500 athletes have competed in 24 different sports ranging from badminton to baseball and water polo to weightlifting.
The newly built Embassy Suites Grand Rapids will be the host hotel.
The USAMG lives up to its repu-tation as the National Sports Festival for Adult Athletes by combining a national-championships-level competitive experience in each sport with a fun and entertaining environment conducive to meeting and socializing with fellow adult ath-letes from across the U.S. and other countries of the world.

Midwest Penguins 15-Black took first place at the Junior Jam on March 8.
The Badger Region has made coaching education a priority.
In 2018, the Badger Region Board of Directors appointed an Education Chair, BJ Le Roy and formed an Education committee. The goal is to create and promote opportunities for Badger Region coaches to become certified, re-certify, and stay current with best practices in the sport of vol-leyball and the field of coaching.
Beginning with the 2018-2019 membership season, Badger Region Coaches will need to complete two hours of Badger Region-approved Coaching Continuing Educa-tion during the current quad (four-year Olympic cycle) to be eligible to coach in the follow-ing quad. Think of a quad as the four years leading up to and culminating with the Summer Olympics.
Annually the Badger Region has approximately 1100 Coaches!
Since Sept 1, 2016 (current quad 2016-2020) approxi-mately 300 coaches have been IMPACT certified.
Approximately 100 coaches achieved CAP I or II certifica-tion at the CAP Clinic hosted by Badger Region in December 2017 or December of 2019.
About 100 coaches from various clubs have participated
in a Badger Region run 3C- Coaches Coaching Coaches program.
An additional 40 coaches attend or participate in Badger Region Education Clinics or programs annually.
This leaves around 600 coaches that we believe are in need of continuing education to stay current on best practices, philosophy, and changes to the game and/or rules.
New coaches will become certified by completing IM-PACT (Increased Mastery and Professional Application of Coaching Theory)
There are a number of FREE options for experienced coach-es including:
* The Art of Coaching Vol-leyball “Badger Region Coaches Certification”
* Re-take IMPACT or attend at least two hours of a live
IMPACT session* Attend a Badger Region
3C clinic (requested by club director)
Other options for re-certifica-tion at the coaches cost include:
* Attending a CAP/BCAP clinic
* Completing two CAP modules
* Complete your CAP certi-fication
* Attend the National HP Clinic
* Attend an Art of Coaching Clinic
* Attend an AVCA convention* Attend a University/College
sponsored coaching clinic (ex: UW-Madison)
* Attend the WVCA spring clinic

Ten females and five males will receive up to $500 each if their applications are complete and they meet the criteria set by the Badger Region. An additional one male and one female athlete, official or coach will win the Frisco Mo Do Good scholarship also

How is the Badger Region Board structured?The Badger Region Volleyball Association
is governed by a Board of Directors that must be elected by members on a regular basis. Area reps serve three-year terms, while members of the executive board serve four-year terms.
Members, whether they are players, coaches, parents, directors, athletic trainers or officials, are encouraged to communicate with their respective representative if they
think policies or financial decision in the Region need to be changed.
Some policies enforced by Badger Region come from USA Volleyball, our sport’s national governing body, so those can’t be changed. But many others can.
The Board is advised by a 11 chairpersons (or experts) in various parts of the game, and five staff members (some of which have multiple responsibilities).
The state is divided into five parts geo-graphically for representation. Plus, there are two at-large board members who you can approach if you don’t feel comfortable with your current rep. And there is a rep dedi-cated just to issues that surround our Junior volleyball clubs and athletes.
You’ll be hearing from each Board mem-ber twice a year in the form of a column in the Badger Beacon. Now, let’s meet them:
