Badger High School Mathematics Department

Which Mathematics class should my student enroll in and what is the progression of

classes while in high school?

When students enter Badger High School, placement in the proper math class is vital for student success. There

are some indicators and previous class choices affecting student placement.

1) The standards a student learns through middle school are predicated by which class or classes a student

has successfully completed in middle school. This does not ensure mastery of those standards so other

indicators need to be used to place students properly.

2) MAP (Measure of Academic Progress) testing is an indicator for Badger High School placement. It is not

the determining factor for student success and may not show true math knowledge. Students need to do

their best during the MAP testing to get a true understanding of their progress. The MAP test is an

adaptive test to understand student’s readiness for certain levels of math.

3) Grading procedures in middle schools affect the grade of a student but do not always reflect mastery of

standards due to the range of factors when calculating grades. A student’s grade may be a combination of

mastery of standards, completing assignments, and/or work habits depending on grading structure.

Therefore, grades do not always equal mastery of standards.

On the next page are requirements, the level of class your student could be enrolled in, and what their progression

of classes could be to their senior year. Students are required by the state to successfully complete three credits of

math for high school graduation. Students must have successfully completed Algebra 2 for acceptance into most

universities.

Table #1 represents the sequence of classes students would enroll in if at Badger High School for four years. If a

student wanted to be college ready. They would need a minimum of three years of math including Algebra 2.

Each column has Algebra 2 so all students have the opportunity to be college ready. This does not mean all will

follow this sequence. If a student fails a class, this will take them off track. Badger High School offers credit

recovery which may involve summer school to get a student back on track.

On the next page, you will find tables showing the classes available at Badger High School, which classes you

should take if entering Badger as a freshman, and the sequence of classes through to senior year if you

successfully complete each class taken.

Follow the columns down to determine which class you should be taking and the sequence of classes for four

years when entering Badger High School.

Table #1: Sequence of Classes

We have classes besides the ones listed in Table #1. A student may wish to take one of the classes below to help

complete the three year requirement or to gain additional knowledge in math. Table #2 shows classes that may be

taken concurrently or in place of classes from Table #1 if a student wishes to be ready for a four year university.

Mathematics Department Credit Recovery

Option #1: Upon teacher recommendation, guardian, and student; the student will stay in their

current math class and attend after school Credit Recovery Seminars three days a week. This

option is for students who scored 50-59% for their first semester grade. This Seminar is separate

from Math Lab and will be held in a separate room from Math Lab. Students will be working on

ALEKS which is a web-based program aligned with our first semester curriculum. The student is

required to stay in their math classroom and successfully complete the ALEKS program for first

semester credit. Upon successful completion in the regular classroom learning second semester

material, they will get the second semester credit. This will get the student back on track so there

would be no need to attend summer school. If the student does not pass second semester, they

then will need to attend summer school to get back on track. If the student does not pass second

semester nor completes ALEKS afterschool, the student will be re-enrolled in the same class the

upcoming year. This will put the student behind schedule for graduation so summer school is

highly recommended to finish the first semester ALEKS standards. If this option is not agreed

upon, the student can select Option #2.

Option #2: Upon teacher recommendation, the student will be dropped from their current math

class and be placed in an ALEKS class during the day. This option is for students who scored

below 50% for their first semester grade. When the student reaches the goal for the first semester

topics, the student will receive the first semester half credit. The student will then be placed in

the second semester class if there is still time in the school year. If the student would like to

finish the second semester material to recover the second semester half credit, we will offer an

extension into summer school to finish. This is highly recommended to get back on track with

math credits and be placed in a traditional classroom the upcoming school year.

Option #3: If a student is extremely close to passing and would like to retest some of the

standards into the third quarter and has teacher approval, the teacher and student will set up a

schedule to retest. This can be done before or after school. The student must keep attending the

set schedule until their grade is passing and no longer has an “NM” with less than or equal to

50% of the remaining masteries as “IM” for all first semester standards.

Option #4: If the student has enough credits in math for graduation, the student may drop the

current math class and pick up either an elective or a study hall.

Mathematics Department Response to Intervention (RtI) Program

The intervention class is named Mathematics Proficiency Development (MPD). When students are

enrolled in MPD, they will be enrolled for the entire semester. The only exception is number one of the

Exit Process.

Start of the year process:

1) If an incoming freshman scores 219 or lower on the MAP testing in the spring of their 8th

grade

year; the MPD teacher, department head, and school psychologist will meet to determine who

will be enrolled in MPD.

2) If a student is attending Badger High School and is recommended for MPD at any time by their

teacher, the student may be enrolled by the classroom teacher contacting the MPD teacher to

express concern. The MPD teacher will contact home and the guidance. If approved by all, the

student will be enrolled in MPD.

3) If an incoming student is from out of district is at risk indicated by their transcript and/or MAP

test score, the guidance will contact the MPD teacher to express concern. The MPD teacher will

contact home and the math department chair. If approved by all, they will be enrolled in the

MPD.

During the School Year Process:

1) If a teacher feels a student needs MPD, the classroom teacher is to contact the MPD teacher to

express concern. The MPD teacher will contact home and the guidance. If approved by all, they

will be enrolled in MPD.

Exit Process:

1) If a student is identified at the beginning of the year to enroll in MPD, the MPD teacher and the

student’s regular classroom teacher will determine if a student needs to continue in MPD within

the first three weeks of school. If the student does not need the intervention as determined by the

classroom and MPD teacher, the student will be withdrawn from the MPD class within those

three weeks of the start of the school year.

2) If a student enters the MPD class any time after the start of the school year, the student must

remain in the class till semester time. At semester time, a student may exit MPD provided they

have earned an 80% or greater in both the regular and MPD classrooms at semester time.

ALEKS Syllabus

Mr. Johnson [email protected] 262-348-2000 ext. 9807

Materials needed for class everyday:

Pencil and Eraser

Three ring binder (1 ½ inch)

Loose leaf paper

Page Dividers (minimally 6 dividers)

Calculator

Expectations for the students:

1) Students are required to attend during regular class hours. If a student does miss a class, they are

expected to make up the time by attending math resource, math lab, or working at home.

2) Students are to work on their ALEKS problems outside of class each week. It should be at least 1 ½

hours per week. We can guarantee 3 hours in class per week but more time is needed if students expect

to have adequate time to finish the class during the regular school year.

3) Students are expected to come to class and work. Since ALEKS is computer based, students are to be

logged on to the ALEKS website and working on their class work. Any other websites are off limit!

4) Students are required to keep a spiral notebook or a three ring binder to take notes and work through

problems. In order for the instructor to assist the student at the time of need, the teacher must be able

to see what the student has been working on and assess where the student needs help or correction.

5) Students are expected to be cooperative and have the ability to work independently. If a student has a

question, they must ask the teacher at the time of need. Teachers in class are your personal tutor for the

hour. However, there are a number of students in class so patience at times is required.

Some things you need to know:

1) You will be assigned a class. Not everyone in this class will be working in the same ALEKS class.

2) Fewer than 10% of the problems are multiple choice. You will need to calculate answers and input them

with the widgets provided.

3) You will get a short interactive tutorial showing you how to input numbers and use the widgets if you

have not already been in the program.

4) You will get an initial assessment showing allowing ALEKS to determine your starting mastery of topics.

The assessment will be between 20 and 30 questions.

5) Assessments will be comprehensive and scheduled once per week. It is important to assess frequently to

evaluate progress and mastery of topics.

6) If you master a topic during the week, you will see the number of topics increase above your pie chart.

When you take your comprehensive assessment for the week, you may notice the number of topics you

had mastered before the assessment may fall or rise. This is because the comprehensive assessments

will give you the past problems, recently learned problem, and problems to learn next. If you do not

show mastery on the comprehensive assessments, ALEKS will put those topics back in for you to keep

practicing.

Page 6: Badger High School Mathematics Department - … Conference/155DJohn… · 1 Badger High School Mathematics Department Which Mathematics class should my student enroll in and what

General Guidelines for class each day in ALEKS:

1) When you come into class each day, you are to pick up a daily progress sheet. On that sheet, you will be

given your weekly goal of topics based on 10% of your remaining topics or at least 10 topics…whichever

is larger.

2) You will go to your assigned computer and log into ALEKS.

3) You are to take out your notes binder, calculator, and pencil. Taking good notes in math class is vital to

succeed in the math classroom. You will be able to use your notes on your assessments.

4) You will be expected to complete 10% of your remaining topics per week. This will be your GOAL as

stated above. If you achieve your GOAL for the week, you will be allowed to listen to music on a device

you bring in the following week. You will not be allowed to listen to music on the computer any time.

Grading:

1) Weekly grades are given as a “MG” meaning the student “met their goals” or “DG” meaning the student

“did not meet their goals”. If a student does not meet their weekly goals, they may be assigned a task

detention.

2) Final grades for a class are based on assessing for mastery at the given percent of topics for the

appropriate level class. These grades are not put into the online grade program because there are

students in different classes and at different points. The grades will be given to the appropriate

administrator to place credits, letter grades, percentages, and name of class on the student’s transcripts

upon completion of class. The completion of class will be partially up to the student as to what grade

they want to receive. The student must meet the minimum requirements in the grading charts below.

Badger High School Summer School Objectives

The summer school program will be focused mainly on credit recovery for Badger High School

students. Students will be eligible for credit recovery if a student did not pass the first or second

semester for any level of Algebra 1, Geometry, or Algebra 2. The student will receive 1/2 credit per

semester upon the successful completion of material.

The second focus will be on Badger High School students who would like to improve their math skills.

For example, a student may wish to improve their algebra skills before entering Algebra 2 and may then

register for Algebra 1. The student will not receive credit for these classes.

Space permitting, the final focus will be on helping incoming ninth grade students strengthen their math

skills. We are offering classes that focus on algebra skills, introduction to basic concepts of algebra, and

mastery of middle school concepts to establish readiness for high school courses. The student will not

receive credit for these classes.

Course Selections High School

The classes offered for credit recovery will be for all semesters and levels of Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra

2. Any one of these classes can be taken for improvement as well.

Incoming Ninth Graders The non-credit classes offered are Essential Math and HS Prep for Algebra 1.

Dates and times Classes will be held at Badger High School from June 23 through July 31, Monday through Thursday, either

from 8-11am or 5-8pm. There will be no class the week of June 30th

. Students will register for either the 8-

11am class or the 5-8pm class. If a student's schedule changes during the summer, they may be able to change

the time of attendance. Arrangements should be made in advance with Katilyn Schrader at 262-348-2000 ext:

9801 or [email protected].

Classroom expectations Students are expected to come to class on time and be prepared to work. Since the summer school is

computer based, students are to be logged on to the ALEKS website and working on their class work.

Students are required to attend daily. Students are allowed three absences. Should there be a fourth

absence, the student will be dismissed from the program. If a student does miss a class, they are

expected to make up the time.

Students are required to keep a spiral notebook or a three ring binder to take notes and work through

problems. In order for the instructor to assist the student at the time of need, the teacher must be able to

see what the student has been working on and assess where the student needs help or correction.

Students are expected to be cooperative and have the ability to work independently.

Students are to be completing a given set of established concepts.

Materials needed for class:

□ Pencil □ Three ring binder (1 ½ inch) □ Loose leaf paper □ Page Dividers (minimally 6 dividers) □ Calculator

Objective:

To recover a student’s first semester half credit. While in class, they will also receive their second semester credit provided they pass. This will allow the student to stay on track with math credits.

An intervention for remediation because topics in ALEKS cover prerequisite knowledge as well.

Process:

Students will be placed in Assessment and Learning in Knowledge Spaces (ALEKS) computer based after school program. Classes have been formed in ALEKS to match Badger High School’s standards for the first semester. Additional remedial topics have also been placed in ALEKS to provide enrichment.

Students will work on topics using explanations provided in ALEKS and teacher guidance when necessary.

Assessments will be comprehensive and scheduled once per week in ALEKS. If you master a topic during the week, you will see the number of topics increase above your pie chart.

When you take your comprehensive assessment for the week, you may notice the number of topics you had mastered before the assessment may fall or rise. This is because the comprehensive assessments will give you past problems, recently learned problem, and problems to learn next. If you do not show mastery on the comprehensive assessments, ALEKS will put those topics back in for you to keep practicing.

This will continue until the student has reached mastery of the first semester material.

Expectations for the students:

Students are required to attend three days after school (3:15 - 4:15 pm). Choose any three days from Monday-Thursday. You will meet in room 2801.

Students are to work on their ALEKS problems outside of class. It is a small amount of time which amounts to approximately one resource or math lab. Once you have mastered the first semester material, you do not have to continue in the after school program anymore.

Students are expected to come to class and work. Since ALEKS is computer based, students are to be logged on to the ALEKS website and working on their class work. Any other websites are off limit!

Students are strongly encouraged to keep a spiral notebook or a three ring binder to take notes and work through problems. In order for the instructor to assist the student at the time of need, the teacher must be able to see what the student has been working on and assess where the student needs assistance or correction.

Students are expected to be cooperative and have the ability to work independently. If a student has a question, they must ask the teacher at the time of need.

If a student has more than three absences, they will be dropped from the ALEKS afterschool program. The student may be dropped from their regular math class at this time to continue in ALEKS during the regular school day. This will allow an opportunity for the student to recover first semester credit for the remainder of the year. This may then require the student to attend summer school to recover the second semester credit to stay on track for the upcoming school year.

After School Agreement

I understand the objectives and process and agree to adhere to the guidelines of the expectations. If I do not

live up to the expectations, I will be dropped from the after school ALEKS program. I may then be removed

from my current math class and placed in ALEKS during the school day. This will allow me the opportunity to

recover the first semester ½ credit only. I will need to attend summer school to recover the second semester

1/2 credit for my current math class.
