FROM THE DESK OF OUR COLLEGE PRINCIPAL
Naplan Week Next week the students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 will be involved in the annual Naplan assessment schedule. If you have a child involved I encourage you to reinforce that this is a one off test that is not designed to be a stress fac‐tor for children or families. We get some very useful informa on from the results and in the lead up to next week many teachers over the last few weeks have been preparing students for the “look and feel” of the tests. The im‐portant factor for me is that children do their personal best and do not stress!! Educa on Week We are looking forward to Educa on Week, which is in the week beginning the 21st of May. We will provide you with a metable of events, and I do hope that we see you up at either or both schools during Educa on Week. I wanted to let you know that we have renamed our special day on Wednesday the 23rd of May as Lunch with a Loved One Day Our aim in having this special ini a ve is to encourage the special people who are part of the lives of our students to come up to school and join in with ac vi es that are happening. So we hope to see older brothers and sisters, uncles, aunts, grandparents, mothers and fathers and stepparents coming along at some point during the day. We hope many come to share lunch me, and some come to sit in on lessons and reminisce about their school days. I know just how excited children get when they know that people special to them com‐ing to share this day with them. Therefore, I hope that we will see many of you around Baden Powell College on Wednesday the 23rd of May. Early Act Presenta on Yesterday evening we had the annual presenta on of the shirts and badges to the members of the EarlyAct Club at Baden Powell College. EarlyAct is a Rotary sponsored leadership opportunity for students selected as leaders in Grade 6 and these wonderful young leaders meet regularly with a purpose of working at school, local commu‐nity and interna onal level to simply make a posi ve difference for others. Exci ng projects are designed and implemented over the course of the year and we will share these with you as me goes on. A tudes to School Survey We value student voice as a means to improving student engagement, wellbeing and quality instruc on and are conduc ng a survey to find out what your child thinks of our College. The A tudes to School Survey is an annual student survey offered by the Department of Educa on and Training to assist schools in gaining an understand‐ing of students' percep ons and experience of school. This year the A tudes to School survey will be conducted at our school over the period Monday 22 May to Friday 23 June and for the first me will be an online survey. The survey only takes 20‐30 minutes to complete and occurs during your child's class me. Your child’s privacy and the confiden ality of your child’s survey responses is protected at all mes. No iden fiable personal data is included in the survey response file and no student is iden fied in the results reported to schools, or in any other report of the data. The survey results is reported to the school in term 3 and we always use the informa on pro‐vided to plan for improved student engagement and learning. THE RESILIENCE, RIGHTS AND RESPECTFUL RELATIONSHIPS PROGRAM IN YEAR 8 The Respec ul Rela onships program is important to us because it helps us learn about important skills that we need now and in our future. It helps us learn and understand the types of problems that people may have. It helps us develop our confidence and lets us know about places or people that can help us if we need help. In Year 8 we have been discussing and learning about:
What stress is. We know that people experience stress for different reasons and at different mes in their lives.
Ways to cope with stress. We talked about using strategies such as medita on, taking a break from the
task, distrac ng our minds by doing something we enjoy and exercising to help release endorphins as ways of helping us cope with stress.
Where we can get support. If we are feeling uncertain about something We can ask our family, friends, teachers, counsellors and access services like Kids Help Line. Knowing how to ask for help. We prac ced some scenarios where we were the person asking for help and
then when were the person who was helping someone else. We learnt that having a process for asking for support can help, for example; expressing how you feel, naming the problem and then asking for help.
What gender stereotypes and gender norms are and the ways that society and the media contribute to
these, for example; the role of males and females in many films, texts and adver sements. The challenges that people face in the community if they do not fit within the expected gender norms. The difference between sex and gender. The importance of diversity.
Did you know… 30% of young females aged between 16 and 24 have experienced at least one type of mental health disorder (Australian Ins tute of Health and Welfare, 2011) 45% of gender diverse/transgender young people aged 14‐25 have been diagnosed with anxiety and 38% have had thoughts about suicide (smith et al, 2014) Wri en by: Bella Care, Kaitlyn Williams, Jamie Shepherd and Jack Connelly.

Here’s what you can do to help children develop stronger reading skills and a love for reading: Set the example. Let children see you read. Have a collec on of books in the home. Update this collec on
rou nely to keep pace with changing tastes and reading skills. Support our school’s Book Fair. Allow your children to choose
their own books to read. Our Scholastic Book Fair is a reading event that brings to school the books kids want to read. It’s a wonderful selection of engaging and affordable books for every reading level. Please make plans to visit our Book Fair and be involved in shaping your child’s reading habits.
Book Fair Dates: Monday 14th ‐ 25th May during Times: Derrimut Heath campus from 8.30 am to 3.45 pm Tarneit campus from 8.15am to 3.30pm

Dear Parents of BPC, Baden Powell College is undertaking an art project for Educa on Week (20‐26 May) the focus being “The Arts”. All students will paint a rock inspired by the book “Only One You” by Linda Kranz.
The story tells of Adri, a li le fish, who is about to go out and explore the ocean on his own. His parents tell him ‐ “There is only one you in this great big world. Make it a be er place.” The book stresses that we are all unique and we all have something to contribute to our world.
n order to undertake our art project, we need the help of our community. We need funds to purchase the rocks and the necessary paint. Any amount you would like to donate will be most gratefully accepted ‐ a gold coin, two gold coins, paper money by Wednesday May 16th. We plan to permanently fix the painted rocks to the walls at school, to display the crea vity of our students and to share the message of this beau ful book.
Thank you in an cipa on and we hope to see you all during Educa on Week

JOBS OVER THE AGE OF 10
Jobs are places where young or elderly people work to make money for their daily life. Jobs unlike chores mean you get paid a wage. All humans all over the world need jobs to survive and live a happy life. All jobs allow young kids to have a li le bit of freedom and independence to make money at a young age. These are the three reasons why children should get a job over the age of ten. It gives kids money to buy life’s essen als. It is very important otherwise you will have nothing in life or a very few things. To start with it is great for their independence. Without a doubt it gives kids a lot of me to do their own thing, it gives them an idea of what they want to do in life. These
jobs also allow children to make friends and work buddys. Next pocket money. All children need to save up for when they grow up. By giving kids an opportunity to save up at a young age. Last but not least, it will allow kids to have a bot of fun. It will li a bit of weight off their shoulders. Stress from school will abolish for the period of me when they are working. They can have fun with other friends and do what they want to do.
All over the world jobs need to be done. I believe that it will help kids all over the age of ten to grow up with an independent fun, happy life.

CELEBRATING TEN YEARS AS A COLLEGE
Would you like your family name engraved on our paving bricks to commemorate our celebration of ten years of our College. A wonderful permanent legacy to be proud of, for only twenty dollars a brick. This is just an expression of interest at this stage.

NUDE FOOD TUESDAY NUDE FOOD TUESDAY NUDE FOOD TUESDAY
Nude food Tuesday is when
all the students around the
school will try to bring their
snack and lunch in
containers, instead of glad
wrap, foil, plas c bags and
other types of li er. If it is a Subway Day we
shall do the Nude Food the day a er, on the
Wednesday.
At the end of every Tuesday the teacher of each
class will calculate how many students brought
in containers. The class with the most students
who bring in the most containers for the whole
month will win a reward at the end of that
month. Prizes will be awarded according to each
year level. The reason we are doing Nude Food
Tuesday is to reduce the li er around our
school. Please help support our environment
and keep our school grounds clean.
