Backup Software 2010

Presented by W. Curtis PrestonExecutive Editor & Independent Backup Expert

When I was in the IT Department

• When I started as “backup guy” at $35B company in

1993:

• Tape Drive: QIC 80 (80 MB capacity)

• Tape Drive: Exabyte 8200 (2.5 GB & 256KB/s)

• Biggest Server: 4 GB (‟93), 100 GB (‟96)

• Entire Data Center: 200 GB (‟93), 400 GB (‟96)

• My TIVO now has 5 times the storage my data center did!

• Consulting in backup & recovery since „96

• Author of O‟Reilly‟s Backup & Recovery &

Using SANs and NAS

• Webmaster of BackupCentral.com

• Founder/CEO of Truth in IT

• Follow me on Twitter @wcpreston

Agenda

• Backup and restore problems

• New backup & restore features

• New products

BACKUP & RESTORE PROBLEMS

So much data, So little time

• Every year we digitize more and more data, creating more and more storage that must be backed up

• Yet the tolerance for traditional backup methods is waning

• No one wants their systems to be inaccessible or slow during backup

• They also want their systems immediately restored with no data loss

SecurityData loss notifications laws:

Requires encryption of personal data by law (MA):

Remote & Mobile Data

Remote & Mobile Data

• Important data

• No (or limited) IT personnel

• Poor bandwidth

• Using tape for remote data is an open invitation for data loss or security issues

• 60-80%* of corporate data resides on PCs and laptops – not on servers

* Source: Gartner

Server Virtualization

Server Virtualization

• 10s to 100s of remote offices in your datacenter (servers w/poor bandwidth)

• The difference is you could be required to simultaneously restore all of these remote offices

• Physics is the problem

• Can only utilize traditional backup techniques for so long

BACKUP & RESTORE FEATURES

Virtual Full Backups

• Available with many products

• Get the power of a full without the data transfer

• Resulting full is the same as a normal full• Restores are the same

• Do not need previous tapes

• Incremental backups based on the full

Backup Software Target Dedupe

• Target dedupe built into backup software allows some of the benefits of appliance dedupe while using generic storage

• Not quite as powerful or scalable as most appliance solutions but may be more affordable for SMBs

Source Dedupe

• Designed to back up remote data over very slow connections• Remote sites

• Mobile systems

• Best suited for environments where bandwidth is a primary concern

• Showing up in many backup products

Dedupe to Tape?

• Concern is that you would need dozens of tapes to restore a single file

• Best used for long term storage of data that you will not frequently restore from

• Must have a good plan for what happens when you do need it

Cloud Backup & Archive

• Not your father‟s Internet backup

• Pricing plans much more affordable, especially for home data

• Perfect for remote data sets, smaller companies, or personal

• Investigate possible future insourcing if it‟s ever possible

Backups Into Archives?

• Typically this is a no-no

• Old grape juice is not wine, and old backups are not archives

• Unless you turn them into archives

• Must give them greater context than typical backup• Full-text search of content of files

• Full-text search against metadata (owner, From:, etc.)

• Separation from host & application requirement

BACKUP & RESTORE PRODUCTS

Disclaimer

• There are hundreds of backup products out there and I have only a few minutes

• Inclusion or exclusion of a product does not equate to me endorsing it or rejecting it

• Products are listed alphabetically

• Aimed at SMBs

• One of the longest-running products

• Investigate new features• Deduplication

• SRM reporting in dashboard

Avamar

• Self-contained source dedupe

• Largest installed base (source)
