A Closeup to NYC Fashion Week
New York City was the stylish scene for Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, which was held September 8 to 15 at Lincoln Center, Pier 92/94 and other destinations located around Manhattan. Designers flaunted their spring/summer 2012 collections, sending models parading down the runways to showcase the chic clothing and beauty looks we’ll soon be embracing.
Backstage, star stylists and makeup artists performed their magic as they translated each designer’s creative vision into hair and makeup looks that complemented and accented the collections. She went be-hind the scenes to mingle with lead stylists and give you a snapshot of what transpired backstage at Diesel, J. Mendel and Reed Krak off.
The following pages capture the latest fashions and highlight some of the season’s most stunning beauty looks, bringing fashionistas all of the trend information that they’re craving.

That’s enough memories, scandal and anecdotes to last many a supper party. Plus being in the office is always the best place to get the gossip. Those moving between low-calorie breakfast meetings, shows and parties in New York like to appear uber-important. Cue: calling me for a chat. Nothing says ‘in demand’ more than talking to your agent. I have a hotline to all the juicy bits. Which is how I heard about the American designer who inflicts their Kabbalah religious beliefs on all those around them. Before any of the 30-strong fashion show team of models, hairdressers, make up artists, stylists and PRs can consume anything, the designer insists all food and drink be blessed. Even the post-show champagne is prayed over by a Kabbalah priest.
In addition, at the beginning and end of the day and before the first model hits the runway, the team are required to hold hands and re-cite Kabbalah prayers. In a big circle. Awkward. After 12-hours back-stage, with few breaks or opportunities to eat, those who were made to wait while their evening pizza was blessed were understandably peeved. If that’s any indication of what New York shows are like, I think I’m happy at home.

The Average Salary of a Fashion ModelIt is every little girls dream to walk the runway or grace the cover of their favorite fashion magazine. From runway modeling to commercial mod-eling and even fit modeling, many men and women work as professional models. A model’s salary depends on the category of modeling she works in as well as the needs of the current market. An aspiring model should understand that her agency will take 10 percent to 20 percent from her final paycheck for each job.
An experienced runway model can make $250 to $1,200 per hour. A model with little to no runway experience may be asked to work for the experience or be paid a smaller flat rate.
Catalogs require models to pose with products or in clothes the catalog is trying to sell. These clients typically pay $150 to $300 per hour, depend-ing on the market and the agency. Catalog models are usually found in ads for department stores.
Designers hire fit models when creating new pieces. These models have the perfect proportions for a given size. Fit modeling is normally found in larger fashion markets such as Miami and New York. The rate for this type of modeling begins at $150 per hour. This is a great way to get your foot in the door with a particular designer.

“Release the models!”
The stage manager’s voice fills the backstage area, busy with hairstyl-ists and makeup artists wielding the tools of their trade over a row of girls in front of brightly lit mirrors.
It takes an extra moment for Petra Vujevic to break free from her chair, where she is surrounded by three stylists trying to tame her long blonde hair into a “punky ballerina” bun. The head stylist is teasing sections of her natural hair while another tends to neon pink exten-sions woven into her ponytail. A third handles clips and brushes.
Vujevic winces. It hasn’t been a good hair day for the 20-year-old Croatian model. It’s the second time today that her head has been pulled in a million directions, loaded down with gooey products and hairspray. But she refrains from pouting because it’s part of the job. Anyway, modeling isn’t her life -- not yet, at least. It’s just something she decided to try by taking a year off from university in Croatia, where she’s studying computer science. She started exactly one year ago, making the rounds in Milan, Paris, London and Spain before arriving in New York three weeks ago for Fashion Week.
She’s paraded out with the rest of the models to a corridor and placed on a riser against a column. She stands there for an hour while an art house film plays and attendees in leather black shorts and vests take her picture. Eventually, she moves to the stage in front of the film screen with other models who are growing impatient. Finally, one of the models starts clapping, and the audience follows. The models seize the opportunity to step down and leave the corridor.
