NEWS April 2015 BACKCOUNTRY WILDERNESS AREA The Backcountry Wilderness Area may be the best kept secret in Highlands Ranch: a jewel of conservation, diverse in wildlife, wilderness area of over 8000 acres, and tons of outdoor activities for you to enjoy. The HRCA acquired the first 800 acres in 2006 from Shea Homes. At that time there were only a few nature hikes. We immediately built and opened five miles of new trails. In 2009, the HRCA acquired the rest of the property for a total of 8,200 acres, or about 13 square miles. How things have changed! Today there are over 26 miles of natural surface trails for running, mountain biking, hiking, and horses and we now have dozens of outdoor programs. Activities include licensed outdoor adventure camps, horse camps, trail rides, birthday parties, a variety of nature hikes, horse drawn hay rides, a community campout, hunting, and plenty of volunteer opportunities. Long-term conservation of the Backcountry Wilderness Area is paramount, and as owners, we take the responsibility seriously. Wildlife are continually monitored and we work to improve their habitat. At the same time, it is important to allow people to experience this resource in a responsible manner; so aside from the trails, access to the majority of the Backcountry is only available through our guided programs, and we offer a plethora of activities to allow people to enjoy this area. The Backcountry, with its trails, outdoor programs, and a large conservation area, sets Highlands Ranch apart from many communities. The future is bright and the possibility of additional amenities in pre-planned areas to support additional activities is a possibility and will only make Highlands Ranch a more desirable place to live. Backcountry Wilderness areaThe Backcountry Wilderness Area may be the best kept secret in Highlands Ranch: a jewel of conservation, diverse in wildlife, wilderness area of over 8000 acres, and tons of outdoor activities for you to enjoy.

The HRCA acquired the first 800 acres in 2006 from Shea Homes. At that time there were only a few nature hikes. We immediately built and opened five miles of new trails. In 2009, the HRCA acquired the rest of the property for a total of 8,200 acres, or about 13 square miles.

Jerry FlanneryCEO and General Manager

Is it Spring yet?It would be nice to have some more precipitation ahead of the warm summer temperatures and fire season, wouldn’t it? We are coming up on the most active part of the year, so dust off the bike and lawn chairs to get ready for some outdoor fun! As you look within this newsletter for all of the great activities going on this month, you will notice a new design and layout of the publication. You will also see a new HRCA web site this month, our goal is to enhance your web experience.

Much thought and collaboration has gone into refreshing and updating the marketing materials within the Highlands Ranch Community Association. These new designs and colors are more modern and appealing to the eye.

Strategic Planning: For several years now, I have been providing steps that the HRCA is taking in our Strategic Planning. Next month will see one major product in the form of our first HRCA Annual Report. This report will give an overview of the working organization and grow in detail with each year of activity.

In February, the Board of Directors (BOD) and I held two mini planning sessions with staff. The first one was held with the Leadership Team (LT), which consists of my direct reports. The second retreat was with the LT and their first tier of managers. This is the first time that kind of team meeting has taken place and all found it incredibly valuable.

Each department reported on their objectives and how they aligned with the Board’s vision and goals. This alignment is very important and provides purpose for each employee. It tells them how they fit into the organization and allows them to understand why their job is important to the HRCA and our membership. It may sound cliché, but the BOD is the “What”, and staff is the “How” in the “getting things done” equation for our organization. To view the power point presentation that outlines the 2015 Staff Objectives visit www.HRCAonline.org/Objectives. Stay tuned for more detailed updates in future newsletters and also visit our web site for more current information at www.HRCAonline.org.

Without volunteers who are willing to serve, Highlands Ranch would not be the great place it is today. Even more importantly, these volunteers help set the direction for tomorrow. Join us in thanking and recognizing them for their outstanding contribution.

The Taste of Highlands Ranch is celebrating its 20th year of excellence in food, wine, beer, and spirits. Davidsons Liquors provides samples of alcoholic beverages while more than 40 area restaurants show off their best cuisine.

In celebration of 20 years, an outdoor beer garden with food and live music from the Michael Friedman Quartet is being added.

Each year a silent auction benefitting a local nonprofit organization rounds out “The Taste.” This year the American Diabetes Association will receive the entire auction proceeds. Approximately 410,312 people in Colorado have diabetes, which is 10.1% of the population. This disease costs Colorado an estimated $3.6 billion. The HRCA is proud to have this organization as our silent auction beneficiary for this year.

The Wildcat Mountain Trail, within the Wildcat Mountain System, remains closed due to Golden Eagle nesting as the eagle pair has returned for another year. Eagles are protected by Federal law and the trail closures are in accordance with protection guidelines. This is the fifth year the eagles have nested on Wildcat Mountain. They have raised a successful fledgling only two times out of the previous four years, let’s hope 2015 is another successful year! It is a privilege to have these magnificent birds so close to where we live and a good sign that our conservation efforts are paying off.

We offer a great opportunity to see a live eagle and raptors at the Raptor Education Foundation presentation on April 23 at 6:00 p.m. at Southridge. Buy your tickets now! Only $5.00 at www.HRCAonline.org.
