Working together for education, We can make the difference!
Welcome to Third Grade!
• Third Grade is a time for expanding and applying the knowledge acquired in the previous grades.
• Your child will be encouraged to become an independent learner and critical thinker.
• I will give you an introduction to 3rd grade and to our classroom. A handout is provided, because I realize there is a lot of information to cover.
• If you have any questions during my presentation, please don’t hesitate to ask them.

A Little About Me• I am a cum laude graduate from the
University of Delaware and I have 2 master’s degree in education focusing on literacy.
• I have been teaching at Tisdale for 16 years. For 9 years I was a second grade teacher. For the past 7 years I have been a third grade teacher.
• I have 2 children- Victoria who is a 7th grader and Taylor who is a 1st grader.
The Night Before School Started
‘Twas the night before school started, When all through the town, The parents were cheering.It was a boisterous sound!By eight, kids were washed
And tucked into bed...When memories of homework...filled them
with dread!
New pencils, new folders, new notebooks, too!
New teachers, new friends...their anxiety grew!
The parents just giggled when they learned of this fright
And shouted upstairs...
GO TO BED- IT'S A SCHOOL NIGHT!
Goals• To give your children the academic and
social tools they need to progress to 4th grade.
• To provide a supportive learning environment where we work as a community team.
• To make new friends and discover new interests.

Our Daily Schedule
• Math• Reading/Language Arts/Spelling• Spelling/Phonics• Lunch 11:10-11:55

Reading
• Mini-lessons that fosters, strengthens, and reinforces concepts that we are working on as a whole group.
• Small Group Reading Groups provides an opportunity to respond and utilize literature that is at a child’s individual level for specific skill instruction and interest.
• Students will keep a record of their reading at home and school (this will come back and forth every day)
• Students will read everyday at home and at school.
Writing
Goals for writing workshop…
• Writes independently for a sustained time.
• Develops ideas in an organized, detailed way.
• Understanding grammar usage, mechanics and spelling through the writing process.
• Develop editing skills for published work.
• Practice writing for a test on the computer in preparation for the PARCC.
Math
• Recognize and write numerals through hundred thousands.
• Understand the properties of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
• Use appropriate tools to measure time, money, objects and distances.
• Use a variety of problem solving strategies and the four basic operations to solve one-step as well as multi-step word problems.
• Memorize the multiplication tables.
ScienceIn the Science Lab we will perform hands-on
activities together to:
• Recognize states of matter, their characteristics and how they change.
• Identify the interdependency of organisms and the role of plants and animals in our ecosystem.
• Develop an understanding that the human body has systems which work interdependently with each other.
• STEM engineering project.
Social Studies
• Develop map skills and geographical vocabulary.
• Understand the world through concepts such as location, customs of people , racial backgrounds, and region focusing on the following countries.
• Understand that we are part of a global community.
• Recognize that we have responsibilities as global citizens.
Homework• Homework will be given Monday through
Thursday.
• Homework will include math, spelling, and reading. About once a marking period, it may also include other long-range projects such as a book project.
• Reading Logs will be brought home and back to school daily. All books should be at your child’s reading level. Homework should be handed in everyday.
• A homework reminder will be given if an assignment is missed.
• Homework should take about 30 minutes.
Parties
• We love to celebrate birthdays if you wish.
• Please bring in a snack such as cupcakes, donuts, cookies, etc.
• If you wish to provide a drink, please bring in individual drinks such as juice boxes or bottled water.
• Please include all necessary paper goods including napkins and plates!!
• No peanuts or tree nuts!
