Journal Writing/DrillsClass work = 25%
• In English classes, students will begin to use journals for writing prompts.
• Students need to bring their journals to class everyday.
• Most class work will be completed in student journals.
• Students will also complete grammar exercises.
Written Work/Projects = 35%
• Students will complete a variety of written projects throughout the year.
• This will include essays of varying length.• Students will focus on:
• Argument Writing– not the same as persuasive. Students support a claim, identify a counter claim and dispute it.
• Expository Writing– response to readings throughout the year
• Descriptive Writing—Students will focus on expanding their word choice, voice, and sentence fluency.
Final/Written Projects• Written work is acceptable for final
projects.• All written final work must be written in
blue or black ink. • All final projects must be double-spaced• Typed final projects must be 12 font.• All final project will be placed in the
• student’s portfolio.
Homework Policy = 5%• 7th grade policy states that no late
homework will be accepted.• This also means that students will not
have a chance to go to their locker to get assignments. Assignments must be in their binder.
• However, projects turned in late will be deducted a letter grade for each day the
project is turned in late.
Classroom Readiness• Students should come in and write
down their assignment in their agenda book.
• Take out their assigned homework/project.
• Have their papers, pencils and composition books ready to go.

Quarterly Assessment• English has quarterly assessment.
• The assessment measures how well the student has mastered the specific content of the quarter.
• The assessment will also count as a test grade in English class.
What will be covered this year?
• Quarter 1– Mystery and Suspense
• Develop and apply strategies (setting a purpose, making predictions and connections, asking questions, visualizing, paraphrasing, summarizing, synthesizing, etc.)
• Analyzing organizational patterns of text (sequential, chronological order, cause/effect, problem/solution)
• Apply knowledge of word patterns and structures• Develop and apply vocabulary through a variety of texts
1st Quarter Lessons• “The Landlady” by Roald Dahl
• “The Tell-Tale Heart” and other works by Edgar Allen Poe.
• Grammar focus will be on clauses and phrases.
• The writing focus will be on expository descriptive, and argument writing.

Other Important Information
• Lost Novels are $10 (Must pay for original book before receiving a new copy. If original is found, you will receive a refund)
• Please look through students agenda books and binders and help keep them organized.

• When students are absent, their missing work is placed in the folders in the room.
• Students are rewarded with $cholar dollars and also have the ability to write their name on the window pane of fame.
