The Back Forty Mine is Aquila’s 100%-owned zinc-gold open-pit mine located in Lake Township in Menominee County, in Michigan’s beautiful Upper Peninsula. Along with these minerals, we will produce copper, silver, lead, and trace amounts of other precious metals that are vital to our everyday lives. Our promise is to provide domestic minerals, create new jobs, and boost the local economy, all while protecting the environment. Aquila Resources Inc. is a development-stage company, headquartered in Toronto, Canada. The Back Forty Mine is currently the primary focus; however, Aquila controls other strategic assets in the Great Lakes Region. Over the past 10 years, more than $80 million has been invested into exploring and advancing Back Forty. Looking forward, we will: Invest approximately $260 million into the construction of the mine Create roughly 250 construction jobs, plus 240 direct jobs and 100 indirect jobs during operations Provide an annual payroll of nearly $10 million Contribute an estimated $20 million in taxes each year to federal, state, and local government Pay more than $16.5 million in royalties to the State of Michigan We will efficiently access the ore body while preserving the environment that is so critically important to all who live here. An independent, detailed Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) submitted to the MDEQ, identifies potential impacts and mitigation measures on environmental and cultural resources. This ensures responsible environmental management across all of our business activities including exploration, construction, operations, and closure. With years of baseline studies completed, we’re working to obtain the required permits to build and operate the Back Forty Mine. To date, we’ve been granted three of four final permits by Michigan’s Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ), including: Nonferrous Metallic Mineral Mining Permit, Air Use Permit to Install, and Pollutant Discharge & Elimination System Permit (NPDES). Our final permit, Wetlands Protection Permit, is expected early in 2018.

Looking forward, we will:• Invest approximately $260 million into the construction of the mine• Create roughly 250 construction jobs, plus 240 direct jobs and 100

indirect jobs during operations• Provide an annual payroll of nearly $10 million• Contribute an estimated $20 million in taxes each year to federal,

state, and local government• Pay more than $16.5 million in royalties to the State of Michigan

We will efficiently access the ore body while preserving the environment that is so critically important to all who live here.

We take protecting water resources seriously. Because the sulfide minerals from the ore body have the potential to create acid if not handled correctly and if allowed to oxidize, their careful management is critical to maintaining water quality.

Any water, including rain and snow, that comes in contact with mining activities will be collected and sent to an on-site, multiphase wastewater treatment facility. Once treated, the water will be recycled back into the mining process or returned to the environment. It will not create acid rock drainage (ARD).

Back Forty Mine will meet or exceed federal and state water quality criteria and regulations. In fact, the water we discharge back into the river will be better than drinking water quality standards to ensure the Menominee River is protected.

Tailings will be deposited in a specially designed, multi-layered storage facility. The tailings will be mixed with waste rock and lime as a contingency measure to offset the formation of acidic water. Any water that collects in the storage facility will be sent to the contact water basins before being directed to the wastewater treatment facility for processing. Upon closure of the mine the tailings facility will be capped and revegetated.

We will carry out and pay for all reclamation activities during operations and following mine closure as required by law. As a safety net for the community, if for some unforeseen reason we are unable to do so, we will provide bankruptcy-proof “financial assurance” to the state before starting any construction or mining activity. This ensures the State of Michigan has the appropriate financial resources to close the mine, reclaim the site, and perform long-term monitoring or maintenance.

To the extent possible, certain impacted areas will be rehabilitated while the mine is operating, while other areas cannot be reclaimed until mining is complete. When mining ends, we will return the site back to its original condition. Some examples of reclamation activities include: backfilling the open pit, removing all buildings and infrastructure, capping the tailings facility, and revegetation. The wastewater treatment facility will remain in place until the MDEQ determines reclamation has concluded.

Back Forty is committed to responsible environmental management across all of our business activities including exploration, construction, operations, and closure. We are proactive in our approach to protecting the environment, especially in the protection and conservation of the Menominee River watershed and the natural resources that our community depends on. We understand the importance in responsibly extracting natural resources and in preserving the environment that is so vital to all who live here.
