• Social Work is an independent discipline in university education, it is both
– Practice-based professional, and academic training
• Thus, this discipline has dual functions to prepare students:
– with practice competence as social workers in the health and welfare fields in Hong Kong and other parts of the world, and
– With knowledge and intellectual ability to understand and inform practice environments.

• Upon graduation, students are:
– Eligible to apply as Registered Social Workers (RSW) from the Hong Kong Social Workers Registration Board.
• After accumulating with practice experience, student can:
– Pursue further education in the Master and Ph.D. levels,
– Return to academic field taking up teaching & research, or
– Take up higher management positions in NGOs to further their professional contribution in direct services.

To answer this question, you need to know “what is social work?”
• Social work is a profession which concerns health and well-being of people, in particular for those who are:
– Vulnerable, oppressed, and living in poverty.
• More than rendering help directly, social work is a process helping people help themselves (助人自助).
– People are empowered with skills & abilities to use different resources to resolve their problems.

• The uniqueness of social work is its emphases on:
– Social justice, &
– The person-in-environment situation.
• More than considering people’s individual deficits, social work also works with people to examine:
– possible relationships, family structure, community environment, and the systems and policies which may impact on their person problems.

• Thus, in the pursuit of social justice, social work intervenes at:
– The micro (individual), mezzo (interpersonal), and macro(social) levels,
– Across personal, interpersonal, social, cultural and political dimensions of human problem
• With a range of working methods including:
– Casework, group work, & community work; and
– Policy formulation and advocacy.
