BACHELOR IN GLOBAL BUSINESS INFORMATICSHow do organisations engage in developing IT strategies and govern ing their enterprises across countries and differences, including professional backgrounds and gender? How do ordinary people put technologies to use in their everyday work environments? These are key questions addressed in the Global Business Informatics programme.

IT affects all aspects of society and people’s lives well beyond what we consider technical. Informatics is the interdisciplinary study of how technologies are designed and put to use in social and organisational settings. The 3-year BSc in Global Business Informatics emphasises qualitative approaches to understanding IT, and its global significance.

An international programme Global collaboration is an important part of the Global Business Informatics programme. The programme is taught in English and many professors have an international background. As a Global Business Informatics student, you will work in groups with students from all over the world and have an excellent opportunity to create an international network.

MEET A STUDENT

“Global Business Informatics is all about interdisciplinarity. You will learn how enterprises and organisations can work smarter by the means of IT. So if you have a sociological interest, a technical inter-est, or a corporate interest you will feel at home at the IT University. The opportunity to investigate and collaborate with organisations as part of the courses is the best thing about Global Business Infor-matics, because you actually learn to apply theory in practice.” Global Business Informatics student Pamina Samarasuriya

WHO STUDIES GLOBAL BUSINESS INFORMATICS?Would you like to contribute to business solutions that help to bring people and continents closer together? Are you interested in promoting cultural and economic development? Do you want to create cooperation and organisational opportunities when IT is put to use? In that case, Global Business Informatics will appeal to you.

As a Global Business Informatics student, you must be motivated to work in groups with fellow students of different nationalities. Making this collaboration work in spite of differences is an important learning experience in the programme.

STUDY PROGRAMME The programme is divided into six semesters with both compulsory and optional courses and is finalised with a bachelor’s project. Each year has a distinct theme:

The first year, IT in a social context, offers contemporary theories and perspectives on how to analyse media and technology as an integral part of society, work and social practices as well as a basic introduction to IT at a technical level, databases and big data.

The second year, IT in businesses, deals with basic business terminology, organisational theory, enterprise systems and information management and state of the art in applying process perspectives on modelling IT and work in organisations in order to improve business processes.

The third year, IT in the global world, goes in depth with the idea of globalisation and the dynamics in bringing various cultures to interact in technologically mediated contexts, as well as management challenges in governing IT under those circumstances. The electives and the bachelor’s project offer an opportunity for

you to shape your own profile. You can choose your electives from a range of courses at the IT University, or you can take electives at another Danish or foreign university. The bachelor’s project can be done in groups or individually.

TEACHING AND PROJECT WORKThe teaching methods are mostly informal and dialogue-based, inspired by a student centered learning approach. They combine lectures and group exercises, and more uniquely, fieldwork in companies such as the United Nations, Dong Energy, SAP, The City of Copenhagen as well as smaller enterprises. Project work is an essential part of the programme. It enables you not only to collaborate with associate professors and other students, but also with businesses and organisations. Project work reflects the reality you will meet when you graduate and gives you a unique chance to immerse yourself into your and your co-students’ specific interests.

MEET A LECTURER

“I really enjoy teaching in Global Business Informatics because of the way we combine tested scientific theory, reflective thinking and practical application. For example, in my course, we learn practical yet solid, science-based approaches to IT-enabled pro-cess improvement. My students carry out projects with real-life organizations to diagnose and suggest improvements to pro-cess problems. In doing so, the students learn to choose and apply a method that fits the company’s situation and thereby support the companies in better reaching their business goals.” Mar Alaranta, Associate Professor

THEORY AND PRACTICEGlobal Business Informatics is developed in cooperation with the business community. The programme is rooted in the industry and in the actual tasks and challenges organisations and businesses face.

The programme equips students with interdisciplinary competences. As a Global Business Informatics student, you learn to appreciate the theoretical contributions from the different disciplines as well as their practical implications. Theories and methods are taught in close connection to their practical applications and span from computer and information science to social sciences and the humanities.

A PROJECT EXAMPLEBased on a global collaboration between actors in Denmark and Bolivia, students from Global Business Informatics worked on mapping out the environmental challenges in Bolivia in their bachelor’s projects. The students travelled to Bolivia to research the possibilities of implementing an electronic mapping system based on the geographic information system Quantum GIS. Through a socio-technical approach, the goal was to map out the challenges of the implementation of a technology in an organisational and social setting that was very different from the western setting in which the technology was developed.

MEET A STUDENT

“This project combined the three areas of Global Business Informatics; understanding the social, organisational and global context of a project. Here theories of technological use and organisational collaboration were used to understand a complex context and find a concrete solution, profitable for all actors involved.” Global Business Informatics student Sidsel Thaarup

MEET A STUDENT

“Global Business Informatics is an education that equips students with a mindset to understand the interplay between people and tech nology, and how they mutually influence each other. You gain competency in bridging the gap between business, information technology and users.” Global Business Informatics student Morten Henrichsen
