A Word from the Artistic Director

Among the numerous factors that describe the Bach Collegium--Fort Wayne, I am most grateful for the collegial, competent and diligent efforts of our talented singers and fine instrumentalists, the excellent groups that perform with us, our generous donors, our volunteers and board, and our supportive audience — all working together to provide this community with its very own baroque music ensemble. Our concerts feature some of the finest examples of early music performance practices, showcasing rich, articulate, and flexible vocal sound - and with the energy and expertise of virtuoso period instrumentalists. This season features not only J. S. Bach, but also his family, students, colleagues, and friends. These include his eldest son Wilhelm Friedemann, his second oldest Carl Philipp Emmanuel, his students Johann Ludwig Krebs and Gottfried August Homilius, his colleague Christoph Graupner, and friend Georg Philipp Telemann. Of special interest to our audience will be the opportunity to compare the master musician J. S. Bach with some of his contemporaries. On Opening Night Nov. 8, the Collegium performs the festive J. S. Bach Cantata BWV 29, the first chorus of which Bach uses again in his Mass in B minor. We also perform a double choir work by Bach’s student Homilius, and a Magnificat by Graupner, an audition piece for the Leipzig position that Bach later held. All of these compositions showcase period strings, oboes and natural trumpets. In December we celebrate the tenth anniversary of our Messiah Sing-Along, conducted by Thomas Remenschneider. This annual event invites singers from the community to join us for one Sunday afternoon to sing through this well-known favorite work. If you have ever sung the Hallelujah Chorus with the radio, YouTube, or CD, you will enjoy singing Messiah and this Chorus again live with a whole chorus of fellow singers. During the February Baroque Festival, the Friday evening concert will feature a double harpsichord work by Wilhelm Friedemann Bach and other instrumental pieces. The Sunday concert will present C. P. E. Bach’s oratorio The Israelites in the Desert. In addition to strings, oboes and natural trumpets, this Festival will include baroque flutes, and natural horns. Then our Season Finale will present another J. S. Bach Cantata BWV 125, augmented by a cantata by Krebs and another by Telemann. These works will be accompanied by baroque period strings, oboes and flutes. This concert will feature guest conductor — Koji Otsuki, who first played viola with us when we performed Mendelssohn’s St. Paul Oratorio. Koji is completing his doctoral studies at Indiana University in the Early Music Program at Jacobs School of Music and is currently employed at Temple University. He specializes in historically informed performances of Baroque music, and we look forward to his participation with us in May. Whether you come to hear a lovely blend of beautiful singing and fine instrumental playing, the exceptional music, or the inspiring texts, or for whatever the reason -- you will be uplifted — and will observe that tensions and anxieties diminish, maybe even evaporate. There will be moments when Bach and his associates will make you smile! Come and hear the joy.
