Human rights attorney Gary A . Haugen founded the International Justice Mission (IJM) in 1997 to protect the poor in developing countries from daily acts of violence and injustice that make it nearly impossible to escape poverty .

As CEO of the largest nonprofit of its kind, Haugen oversees a staff of approximately 1,000, including lawyers, criminal investigators and social workers . IJM partners with local authorities in impoverished nations to shield the world’s most vulnerable from forced labor, sexual assault, illegal detention, land theft, police abuse and other acts of brutality . The organization has restored safety to over 47,000 individuals .

In 1994, following the genocide of an estimated 800,000 Tutsi in Rwanda, Haugen was director of the United Nations investigative team of lawyers and forensic experts who gathered evidence from more than 100 sites of violence and mass murder .

Haugen was recognized by the U .S . State Department as a Trafficking in Persons “Hero” – the highest honor given by the U .S . government for anti-slavery leadership . He is the author of several books, including his most recent, “The Locust Effect: Why the End of Poverty Requires the End of Violence” (2014) .

Haugen received a bachelor’s degree from Harvard and a juris doctorate from the University of Chicago . Gary and his wife, Jan, have four children .
