Fun and frolic in Bromley’s woods and on the field. Without the volunteers who give up their own time to organise these events nothing would happen. A big thank you to Jean for catering, Eric for being Field Captain; and to all the other people who helped out. Weather: Hot and sunny ... the heatwave continues!

What is it? Weather:

BAC’s nod to the tardiness of HM Queen Victoria. HM the Queen was late for an archery competition. We don’t know what round they shot but we always shoot a nine dozen round. The assembled Victorian company shot an extra three arrows at the end of the round. We did not do this today as it was way too hot and the turn out was low. Very hot.

A summary of open away shoots attended by members of Bromley Archery Club

Sutton Bowmen Charity Portsmouth – 18 March Well done to Dylan Barham who came second for junior barebow, shooting an indoor double Portsmouth. Dylan Barham – 2nd Junior Barebow

Medieval Society Bowmen Open Field Shoot – 9 April A drizzly, mud filled day by all accounts Although a number of archers did not turn up there were plenty to take their places and 50 to 60 shot on the day. After 40 3D targets Helen Jeory won first prize for the longbow ladies. Helen Jeory – 1st Longbow Lady

Swan Spring Shoot – 9 April A dreary day for Swan's Spring Western. Three Bromley Archers attended unlike many others who were obviously put off by the weather. Two of them came away with medals - George Gard came second for the longbow men and Tom Williams was second for barebow men. George Gard – 2nd Longbow Men Tom Williams – 2nd Barebow Men

LPA Grand Knight’s Challenge – 20 May 2018 The morning started off a little chilly but brightened up considerably to a warm, sunny day. For a second year, the competition comprised a series of medieval themed targets including the well known knight and attendants. The Dragon’s Lair posed issues for many as the dragon’s head was sited through a butt with a hole. Similarly the Balls of Doom – spongy balls hanging from a line. The archer had to impale the ball with their arrow. The Jester’s Wand was a vertical stick with balloons attached at the top and swinging from side to side. Not easy and, with three arrows, if you burst one that’s your lot. The result for the coveted chalice in the Chalice Challenge was a mystery right till the last and it was simply the most number of hits during the day in a pictorial chalice. As two people (both longbow ladies!) had the same score at the end there was shoot off at the jester’s Wand – two balloons, three arrows. Helen shot a balloon with her first arrow. At lunchtime there was entertainment in the form of bicycle jousting! It looked difficult. Much hilarity ensued and the black knight won. Bromley’s attendance was back up again and we acquitted ourselves admirably. Tom Williams shot the highest score of the day. Dylan and George were very disappointed at the raffle and claimed that it had been rigged. Better luck next time chaps but a fantastic time had by all! Helen Jeory – Chalice Challenge Winner Tom Williams – 1st Gent Barebow Andy Barham – 3rd Gent Barebow Emma Barham – 3rd Lady Barebow

Invicta Coaching Springboard Tournament - 22 July This competition is for archers who have not yet achieved Bowman status in a particular chosen discipline. It is a handicap round which means that the lower the raw score, the more likely the archer is to win. It gives less able archers an opportunity to compete against and beat better archers! Tom Williams achieved a Bowman score on the day, shooting a New Western, so he was very unlikely to win on handicap. However, he did win a medal for the highest raw score for Barebow Gents.

High Weald Charity Shoot – 1 September Back to summer again with a spectacular day in Tonbridge. The round is the bespoke "Wealden" 12 dozen round - four dozen arrows each at 60, 50 and 40 yards. This competition in aid of ABF The Soldiers' Charity was opened up to barebows this year instead of just longbows but there was not much uptake from them. The two Bromley Archers who attended aquitted themselves well. Tom Williams - 1st Barebow Gent Helen Jeory – 3rd Lady Longbow

The Women’s Institute HAG – 22 September It was a rainy and windy day at a Have-A-Go session for the ladies (and a few of their husbands) of The Women’s Institute. Thirteen ladies took part in the morning session and eleven in the afternoon. Luckily all were dressed for the weather conditions. They were very competitive when it came to the competition and all had a great time despite the continued drizzle. Shame they did not allow the men to take part in the competition!

The ladies did not bring any cakes but plenty of assorted biscuits. Thanks to Andy, Eric, Jameel, Jean, George and Robin for their time and effort in increasing club funds.
