The Heaven Voidconsists of the bottom two rows, where are no HeavenlyStems tomatch the Earthly Branches, as indicated by "X".The presence of Heaven Void is like a catalyst, and it canmoderate or reverse the eect of an auspicious or inaus-picious Star. For example, if there is both an auspiciousStar and a Heaven Void in a Ba Zi chart, the auspiciousStar will be less benecial. Similarly, if there is both aninauspicious Star and a Heaven Void in a Ba Zi chart, theinauspicious Star will be less harmful. To determine the presence of the Heaven Void in a BaZi chart, look at both the Stem and Branch of the YearPillar and both the Stem and Branch of the Day Pillar. After this, look at the Earthly Branch of the other pillarsto determine whether the Heaven Void is found. For example, if the Year Pillar is H1-E1 (in Group One),then Heaven Void falls on E11 and E12, so if the MonthBranch is E11 or E12, then Heaven Void is located in theMonth Pillar. Similarly, if the Day Pillar is H2-E10 (inGroup Three), then Heaven Void falls on E7 and E8, soif the Day/Month/Year Branch is E7 or E8, then HeavenVoid is located in theDay/Month/Year Pillar respectively.

2.1 Heavenly StemsThere are ten Heavenly Stems (represented by theacronyms H or HS) used in the construction of theFour Pillars of Ba Zi (), a method of Chinese Div-ination based on a persons date and time of birth. Forexample, both the acronyms HS1 and H1 representthe rst Heavenly Stem, namely "Jia" (Yang Wood), asshown in the tables below.

    2.2 Heavenly Stem Combinationsand Clashes

    Notes:

    1. In the above table, 5Com means the 5 Combina-tions of two adjacent Heavenly Stems. These com-binations result in a good structure of a persons BaZi

    2. Clash means that the Heavenly Stems clash witheach other in the Ba Zi, when they are next to eachother. Clashes will result in a poor structure of apersons Ba Zi.

    3. If there is a Clash of two adjacent Stems, as wellas a Combination with another Stem, the Clash willnot occur, as Combinations take precedence overClashes.

    3.1 Earthly Branches

There are twelve Earthly Branches (represented by theacronyms E or EB) used in the construction of theFour Pillars of Ba Zi (). For example, both theacronyms EB1 and E1 represent the rst EarthlyBranch, namely "Rat" (Yang Water), as shown in thetables below.Notes:

    1. The Chinese terms used for the animal mnemonicsare not words used for the animals themselves. Forexample, the Chinese word for Rat is "" and not"". Similarly, the word for Horse is "" and never"", as shown in the table above. The animal signsare therefore used purely as a memory aid, and carryno inherent meaning. In other words, the physical ormental characteristics of a person cannot be inferredfrom the animal sign under which he/she is born. Forexample, it cannot be inferred that a person born un-der the Ox sign is strong, or that a person born underthe Tiger sign is ferocious. Such facile inferencesare invalid.

    2. In translating the Earthly Branch fromChinese to En-glish, only one word is used, although the Chineseterms could be translated into English in more thanone way. For example, the Chinese term for Goatcould equally mean ram or sheep in English, theterm for Rat could also be translated as mouse, and the word for Metal is sometimes translated asGold, as the same Chinese character is used forboth. In addition, the term Five Elements could betranslated literally, and perhaps more accurately, as"Five Movements".

3.2 Earthly Branch Interactions(Combinations and Clashes)

In the table below, combinations and clashes refer to thetype of interactions between two or more of the fourEarthly Branches (the hour, day, month and year earthlybranches) found in a persons Ba Zi chart.Combinations refer to auspicious interactions, andclashes are inauspicious interactions. For example,in Row 1, combination(E3,E4,E5) means that if thebranches E3, E4 and E5 are found in a persons Ba Zichart, it is an auspicious sign. On the other hand,clash(E1,E7) in Row 7 means that if the branches E1and E7 are found in a Ba Zi chart, it is an indication ofan inauspicious chart.Combinations may result in a new element being formedin a chart. For example, combination(E12,E4,E8) inRow2 will result in the formation of the new element"Wood", as indicated in the table below.

    3.3 Hierarchy of Earthly BranchInteractions

The following is the hierarchy of Earthly Branch interac-tions, ranked in descending order of importance. For ex-ample, Seasonal Combination is more important, andwill override Three Combinations, which in turn willoverride Three Persecuting Clashes.

    1. Seasonal Combination2. Three Combinations3. Three Persecuting Clashes4. Six Clashes5. Half Combination6. Self Persecuting Clash7. Six Combinations8. Conicted Clashes

3.4 Prerequisites For InteractionsTo Be Successful

The prerequisites for interactions to be successful are:

    1. Three Combinations: For a front-half or rear-halfcombination to be successful, the resultant element(Water, Earth, Fire, Wood, or Metal) must bepresent in any one or more of the Heavenly Stemsof the Ba Zi chart. For example, a half-combinationof E1 (Yang Water) and E9 (Yang Metal) will re-sult in the Water element. If the Water element isfound in any of the four Heavenly Stems, then thishalf-combination will be eective (the branches E1and E9 need not be next (adjacent) to each other inthe Ba Zi chart for the combination to be success-ful). Conversely, a combination of E1 and E9 willnot be successful if the element Water is not foundin any of the four Heavenly Stems of a persons BaZi chart.

    2. Six Clashes: For a Six Clash to be eective, thepair of contributing branches must be next (adja-cent) to each other in a Ba Zi chart. For exam-ple, the clash of E7 and E1 will be eective if E7is on the Hour Earth Branch and E1 is on the DayEarth Branch. On the other hand, the clash of E7and E1 will not be eective if E7 is on the HourEarth Branch and E1 is on the Month or Year EarthBranch.

    3. Six Combinations: For a Six Combination to beeective, the pair of contributing branches must benext (adjacent) to each other in a Ba Zi chart. Forexample, the combination of E2 and E1 will be ef-fective if E2 is on the Hour Earth Branch and E1is on the Day Earth Branch. On the other hand, thecombination of E2 and E1 will not be eective if E2is on the Hour Earth Branch and E1 is on the Monthor Year Earth Branch.

    4. Seasonal Combinations: For a Seasonal Combina-tion to be eective, the three contributing branchesneed not be next (adjacent) to each other in a Ba Zichart.

3.5 Hidden Heavenly Stems inEarthly Branches

For every Earthly Branch, one or more Hidden HeavenlyStems may be found. In the evaluation of a Ba Zi chart, both the Earthly Branches and Hidden Heavenly Stemsare taken into account.

The "+" sign in the table below represents Yang, and the"-" sign represents Yin. For example, "+Wood denotesYang Wood, and "-Water denotes Yin Water.

    Hsia Calendar

5.1 IntroductionThe Hsia Calendar () is also known as the Ten Thou-sand Year Calendar (). Unlike the Chinese LunarCalendar, the Hsia Calendar is a Chinese solar sexage-nary calendar system, based on a cycle of 60-years.

5.2 PurposeFor a given date and time of birth, the Hsia Calendar isused to obtain the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Brancheswith which to construct the Four Pillars of Destiny ()of a person. The Four Pillars of Destiny are also known asthe Ba Zi (), literally the Eight Characters of a personsbirth. In ancient China, one use of this form of divinationwas to select a suitable marriage partner. The Four Pillars of Destiny are the Year Pillar, theMonthPillar, the Day Pillar and the Hour Pillar. Each Pillar ismade up of two components, namely the Heavenly Stemand the Earthly Branch, both of which are read from theHsia Calendar. The Hsia Calendar is also used in various types of FengShui, or Chinese Geomancy, such as the Flying Star FengShui.

5.3 SeasonsThere are twelve Seasons (SS) used in the Hsia Calendar. These are based on the relative position of the sun.

6.1 Hour PillarThe Hour Pillar is used in the construction of the FourPillars of Ba Zi (), a method of Chinese Divinationbased on a persons date and time of birth:

The Heavenly Stem of the Hour Pillar is obtainedfrom the intersection of the column (Heavenly Stemof Day Pillar) and the row (Time of Birth). For ex-ample, for a person born between 5pm-7pm, with aHeavenly Stem of the Day Pillar of H3, theHeavenlyStem of the Hour Pillar will be H4.

The Earthly Branch of the Hour Pillar is obtainedfrom the last column (Earthly Branch of Hour Pillar)of the above chart. For example, if the HeavenlyStem of Day Pillar is H3 and the time of birth is6.23pm, then the Hour Pillar is H4, E10.

Ba Zi | Heavenly Stems | Earthly Branches | Hsia Calendar(Xia Calendar) | Hour Pillar | Luck Pillar | Life Cycle |Hidden Stems | Seasonal Cycle | Symbolic Stars | AspectsOf Life | Date Selection | List Of Ba Zi

7.1 Luck PillarThe Luck Pillar (, Ta Yun) of a persons Ba Zi chartgives an indication of a persons luck in periods of 10years each. The Luck Pillar is plotted based on the fol-lowing:

7.2 Heavenly Stem of the Year Pil-lar

7.3 Earthly Branch of the MonthPillar

There are 12 Earthly Branches as follows:Using the Monthly Pillar of a Ba Zi chart, the rst luckpillar will be the next Stem & Branch of the above charts,in either the forward or reverse cycle. For example, a male born in a Yang year (or a femaleborn in a Yin year) will follow the forward cycle, and ifhisMonth Pillar is HS8 and EB6, then his rst Luck Pillarwill be HS9 and EB7.Similarly, if a female is born in a Yang year (or a maleborn in a Yin year), her luck will follow the reverse cy-cle, and her rst Luck Pillar will be HS7 and EB5, if herMonthly Pillar is HS8 and EB6.

7.4 Starting Age of the First LuckPillar

Each Luck Pillar lasts 10 years. The rst ve years arecovered by a Heavenly Stem, and the next ve years by anEarthly Branch, and this is repeated for each subsequent

Luck Pillar. The starting age of the Luck Pillar is basedon the date of birth in the Hsia Calendar. The followingvariables are used to derive the Luck Pillar:

    1. The gender of the person

    2. The Yin or Yang of the Heavenly Stem of the yearof birth

    3. The Monthly Pillar of the Ba Zi of the person

    4. The number of days to the preceding or followingHsia Season, from the date of birth

There are two possibilities, (A) and (B), as given below:(A)For amale born in a Yang year (that is, the Heavenly Stemof the Year Pillar is Yang), the method is to look up hisdate of birth in the Hsia Calendar, count forward, andobtain the number of days from his date of birth to thenextHsia Season, where Early Spring is represented by 1,Mid Spring by 2, Late Spring by 3, ... etc. For example,if Joe is born on 28th August 2000 (where the MonthlyPillar is HS1 and EB9), then the rst day of the followingHsia Season is 7th Sep 2000, and the number of days is10.The starting age will be 10 divided by 3, rounded to thenearest integer, which is 3. The Heavenly Stem of Joesrst ve years will be from 3 to 7, and the Earthly Branchof his next ve years will be from age 8 to age 12. TheLuck Cycle or Luck Pillar is plotted from right to left, asthe age increases, beginning from the next (in increasingorder) Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch of his MonthlyPillar. The above calculation also applies for a female born in aYin year. The Luck Cycle : H2-E10, Age 3, Forward(B)However, for a male born in a Yin year, or a female bornin a Yang year, the counting is in a backward sequence. The counting starts from the date of birth backwards tothe preceding Hsia Season. For example, if Joe is bornin a Yin year, the counting will start from 28th August

The HeavenlyStem of Joes rst ve years will be from 7 to 11, and theEarthly Branch of his next ve years will be from age 12to age 16.The Luck Cycle or Luck Pillar is plotted from right to left,as the age increases, beginning from the next (in decreas-ing order, since Joe is a male born in a Yin year) HeavenlyStem and Earthly Branch of his Monthly Pillar. The Luck Cycle : H10-E8, Age 7, Reverse

    Date Selection

12.1 IntroductionIn Chinese divination, the selection of an auspicious dateis based on the Hsia Calendar. Auspicious dates are se-lected for marriages, job applications, business transac-tions, signing of agreements and other important events. The general strategy to select a good or auspicious day isto follow these steps:

    1. For a particular period (week/month/year), rststrike o the days that are generally inauspicious, such as [Danger] or Three Killings days.

    2. By comparing with a persons Ba Zi, strike o thosedays that are personally inauspicious, such as Ex-tinction Star (pX-) days.

    3. After narrowing down the search, the remainingdays are probably usable if not auspicious. Select theremaining days that auspicious, such as [Success] orGood Asset days, and/or those that are personallyadvantageous, such as Combination (pGC-) and/orHeavenly Doctor (pGH-) days.

12.1.1 Column HeadingsThe signs/symbols (Three Killings, Good Asset, Success, etc) that indicate whether a day is auspicious or inaus-picious may appear under any Column Heading (Year,Month, Day, Season, etc) in a table for convenience ofrepresentation only. As a calendar with listings by date, all signs/symbols refer to the day itself, and may not in-dicate any relationship whatsoever with the columnunder which it appears. For example, the personal Ex-tinction Stars are put into the Season column for conve-nience only, as it makes the table more compact; the Ex-tinction Stars do not have any relationship with the Sea-son. If an Extinction Star is to be put into a column thatrepresents a persons Ba Zi, namely one of the 10 Heav-enly Stems, an additional 10 columns will have to be in-cluded, making the table unwieldy. This problem will becompounded if the same logic is applied to the EarthlyBranches, and 12 additional columns will need to be in-cluded. Column proliferation is avoided by simply en-closing the signs/symbols within round or square brack-

ets, then putting them into existing columns in the tables, with the understanding that all signs/symbols have mean-ing only within the context of the date (row) itself. Inother words, these signs/symbols within brackets can beput under any other column without altering their mean-ings.

12.2 YearsThe following is a list of Gregorian calendar years thatmay be used for the selection of auspicious dates in theHsia Calendar system:

    12.2.1 Date Selection By Year

    12.3 Abbreviations, Signs AndSymbols Used

The use of abbreviations, signs and symbols is to min-imise the size of the date selection calendar, whilst facil-itating understanding without bloat.

12.3.1 Brackets1. [] - Square Brackets are used to indicate eects that

are solely dependent on the date itself, and are inde-pendent of a persons Ba Zi. Within square brackets, capital letters are acronyms for the Pillar and Stem/ Branch of the Date. For example, MH refers tothe Month Heavenly Stem of the Date, and YErefers to the Year Earthly Branch of the Date.

    2. () - Round Brackets are used to indicate eects thatare dependent on BOTH the date and a persons BaZi. Within round brackets, the small letter p im-plies that the eect is personal to a persons BaZi. The other small letters are acronyms for the Pil-lar and Stem / Branch of a persons Ba Zi chart. Forexample, mh refers to the Month Heavenly Stem, and de refers to the Day Earthly Branch of a per-sons Ba Zi.

    19

  • 20 CHAPTER 12. DATE SELECTION

The use of square and round brackets, together with theuse of capital and small letters, are designed to help areader to rapidly decipher and understand the usefulnessof a day in date selection.

12.3.2 Prosperity StarsGPS-" represents a Good Prosperity Star, and is an aus-picious day for investments. For any particular Date, theProperity Star is computed using the Heavenly Stem ofthe Year and the Earthly Branch of the Day. For exam-ple, GPS-DE5 means there is a Prosperity Star on thatday, where the Day Earthly Branch has a value of 5 (rep-resenting Dragon).

12.3.3 Year Asset or Storage StarGA-" represents Good Asset (Year Asset or StorageStar) days. For example, [GA-DE2] represents a YearAsset Day, with a Day Earthly Branch of 2 (representingOx).

12.3.4 Heavenly Doctor ()pGH-" are days of the Personal Good Heavenly Doctor, when the Month Earthly Branch (the Earthly Branch ofthe Month of Birth in a persons Ba Zi), combines withthe Heavenly Doctor Star in the Day Earthly Branch (theEarthly Branch of the Day in the respective Date). Forexample, pGH-me12 represents an auspicious date fora person whose Ba Zi has a Month Earthly Branch with avalue of 12 (representing Pig).

12.3.5 The Earthly Branch Of The Per-sonal Year Pillar

pGC-ye1 (2, 3,... 12) : This is the Personal Good Com-bination day for someone with an Earthly Branch of 1 (2,3,... 12) in a Ba Zis Year Pillar. It indicates that thecombination between the Earthly Branch of the Day (forthe respective Date) and the Earthly Branch of Year (ina persons Ba Zi) is auspicious. For example, pGC-ye6is an auspicious day for a person whose Ba Zi has a YearPillar where the Earthly Branch is 6 (representing Snake).

12.3.6 Clashes ()Clashes With The Year

XY-" : These inauspicious days, also known as YearBreaker days, are days where the Earthly Branch of theYear clashes with the Earthly Branch of the Day. Forexample XY-10 means that the Earthly Branch of theDay is 10 (representing Rooster), and this clashes with the

Earthly Branch of the Year, resulting in an inauspiciousday.

    Clashes With The Month

XM-" : These inauspicious days, also known as MonthBreaker days, are days where the Earthly Branch of theMonth clashes with the Earthly Branch of the Day. Forexample XM-9 means that the Earthly Branch of theDay is 9 (representingMonkey), and this clashes with theEarthly Branch of the Month, resulting in a bad day.

    12.3.7 Three Killings

X3-" : These inauspicious days are known as YearlyThree Killings Days, and represent the clash of the Ele-ment of theDaywith the 5-Element Structure of theYear. For example, X3-Wood means the clash of the Day El-ement of Metal against the Wood Structure of the Year. These are inauspicious days. There are four frames (structures) of the Three HarmonyCombination of the 12 Earthly Branches:
