Course in Depth

What will I study?

Year 1 will introduce you to the principles and practice ofadvertising, applying your own knowledge and creativityby developing 'big ideas', strategies and highly finishedvisuals for advertising campaigns. You will study andapply key craft skills such as design principles, artdirection, copywriting and visualising and be introducedto diverse visual cultures which encourage you to thinkabout, and critically examine, visual technologies andexperiences. You will be supported throughout theprogramme by teaching staff, industry practitioners andbe assigned a personal tutor to advise and guide you.

In Year 2 the focus is on industry and professionalpractice, critical analysis and developing both creativeand research skills. You will produce integrated brandcampaigns, explore and apply transmedia storytellingtechniques and create a television commercial in acollaborative project with BA (Hons) Film and TelevisionProduction students. You will be given a choice ofmodules and may wish to explore the psychology ofpersuasion or writing for the media. An additional focusin Year 2 will be to plan and prepare for your futurecareer using workshops on employment, interviews,networking, freelance work and a body of creative workproduced from briefs set by industry and otherprofessional organisations.

Year 3 involves live briefs and the creation of a portfolioof industry-ready advertising campaigns forcontemporary brands across many different mediaplatforms. The projects you work on will come from avariety of UK creative agencies. You will also participatein nationally recognised student award competitions. Anoptional dissertation enables you to carry out a personalresearch project that reflects your professional interests.Alternatively, you could immerse yourself in eventmanagement.

How will I study?

Teaching includes lectures, tutorials, seminars,workshops, demonstrations, individual supervision,

directed reading/study and student-directed study. Thereis an emphasis on acquiring individual transferable skillsas well as developing knowledge and skills vital toadvertising practitioners.

How will I be assessed?

Modules are assessed by coursework, either at the end of,or throughout, each module. Coursework includes essays,case studies, individual and group presentations, practicalprojects and a final year dissertation. Assessment in Years2 and 3 contributes to your final degree.

There are no formal written examinations as part of thecurrent assessment methods on this programme.

Who will be teaching me?

You will be taught by an experienced team with a widerange of interests reflecting all areas of advertising andmedia theory. Team members are active in the research ofcontemporary developments in media and offer manyyears of experience of working in the AdvertisingIndustry.

MED1041: CreativCreative Thinking and Visualisinge Thinking and Visualising (20 credits)CreativCreative Thinking and Visualisinge Thinking and Visualising introduces the concept of creative thinking and its importance within the creativeindustry. You will explore creative thinking techniques to develop ideas, such as brainstorming, mind mapping andmood boards. As well as generating ideas, you will develop the ability to visualise. This module will provide the tasksand space for you to be experimental and will encourage you to change the way you see, approach and respond tocreative tasks.

MED1204: Understanding Visual CulturesUnderstanding Visual Cultures (20 credits)Understanding Visual CulturesUnderstanding Visual Cultures introduces you to ways in which you can think about, and thus critically examine thevisual and visualisation. Engaging with a variety of theoretical approaches, you will be offered opportunities to activelyengage with visual technologies and experiences and to apply and problematise critical approaches through reflectionupon your experiences.

MED1402: Introduction to AdvIntroduction to Advertisingertising (20 credits)Introduction to AdvIntroduction to Advertisingertising provides you with an overview of how advertising works in relation to communicatingmessages for a variety of campaigns. You will discover how the industry operates in relation to agencies, roles andstructure. Regulation and ethics will be introduced in order to underpin appreciation of visual codes and practices anddemonstrate the interaction of advertising and society. In addition, you will learn how to plan a tactical campaign.

MED1403: Art Direction and CopArt Direction and Copywritingywriting (20 credits)Art Direction and CopArt Direction and Copywritingywriting introduces the principles of art direction and copywriting. The module will develop yourpractical skills to create advertisements by combining text and image effectively. The simulation of a creative studiowill allow you to respond to individual and group tutor-set briefs in which you will develop your criteria to evaluate thebest use of materials, techniques and methods of production.

MED1040: Digital PhotogrDigital Photographaphyy (20 credits)Digital PhotogrDigital Photographaphy (20 credits)y (20 credits) covers various genres within photography such as landscape, portrait, architecture,pictorial and other areas. Each session will typically consist of a lecture, workshop and a tutorial / seminar. You willconsider composition, framing, colour and editing. All work will be undertaken using digital technology and basictraining in the use of cameras and Photoshop will be provided.

MED1046: Academic, Professional and Research SkillsAcademic, Professional and Research Skills (20 credits)Academic, Professional and Research SkillsAcademic, Professional and Research Skills assists you in developing key academic skills. Teaching focuses on a rangeof activities including report writing, presentation styles, using archives and databases, and time management.

MED1057: Communicating Through DesignCommunicating Through Design (20 credits)Communicating Through DesignCommunicating Through Design introduces you to a range of production skills which are essential for public relationsand promotion-related work, including campaigns and event management. Alongside developing practical skills, youwill discover the theories of design and communication and be introduced to a range of media, including print anddigital multimedia. The module will include an overview of the use of industry-relevant hardware and software acrossa range of media. This includes image manipulation software (Adobe Photoshop), desktop publishing software (QuarkXpress) and web page creation software (Dreamweaver and Flash).

MED1418: VFX Creation and DesignVFX Creation and Design (20 credits)VFX Creation and DesignVFX Creation and Design recognises that information graphics, title sequencing, advertising, music industry videos,idents, broadcast programme content, animated visualisation and internet graphics are core products associated withVFX design and provide a varied and abundant source of employment for those who are motivated by moving imagedesign. This module introduces you to the driving concepts in the development of moving image design where they willidentify short and feature length filmic structures, television and broadcasting formats, and orientate towards avariety of design related VFX applications and developments. You will also gain an understanding of the underpinninghistory, theory and constructs of VFX and develop this knowledge for application within your practice work andaligned modules.

Language modules in French, Spanish or Mandarin, delivered at the Edge Hill Language Centre, are available to studyas an integral part of this degree. A single Language module can be studied instead of one of the optional modulesabove.

Year 2

MED2052: IntegrIntegrated Brated Brand Campaignsand Campaigns (20 credits)IntegrIntegrated Brated Brand Campaignsand Campaigns focuses on the development of branding and the changing role of advertising, promotionand design. You will develop a critical and practical understanding of how contemporary branding is used in modernsocieties and institutions and also consider its contexts.

MED2082: CreativCreative Research Methods and Professional Ethicse Research Methods and Professional Ethics (20 credits)CreativCreative Research Methods and Professional Ethicse Research Methods and Professional Ethics gives an overview of the main research methodologies used incommunications. You will get a chance to identify, justify and implement different methods and techniques dependingon the chosen topic and type of project. There is a focus on ethics in research and on ethics in the broader world ofpublic relations. This focus includes the ethical codes of the various professional organisations and a look at corporatesocial responsibility.

MED2206: Client LClient Led Briefed Brief (20 credits)Client LClient Led Briefed Brief centres on the key relationship between client (commercial company, commissioning editor etc) andthe production team. You will apply your creative and professional knowledge and skills in response to the brief set bythe client and also develop knowledge of and apply key elements of marketing and public relations to the promotion ofyour own product. As such, this module provides you with the skills to operate at a professional level within the mediamarketplace.

Theconvergence of media, technologies and culture has heralded in a new age of audience engagement within mediafranchises. The module will reflect on this enhanced two-way communication and engage you in new and innovativeways of connecting to the audience with extended narrative and content.

MED2049: Industry PIndustry Portfolioortfolio (20 credits)Industry PIndustry Portfolioortfolio gives you a chance to focus closely on aspects of advertising in existing organisations, explore futureprofessional avenues, as well as considering the possible advertising careers for which you are best suited. As a result,this module will encourage you to identify and reflect upon your own achievement and potential. You will be requiredto work both independently and with tutors to plan and shape your own personal profiles and career strategies in avariety of practical ways, e.g. compiling a CV, preparing for interviews and job hunting.

MED2050: CreativCreative Adve Advertisingertising (20 credits)CreativCreative Adve Advertisingertising involves working in creative teams as art directors and copywriters responding to a series of livebriefs. You will explore the relationship between advertising, production companies, conceptual thinking, writing,teamwork and design. By the end of the module, you will have assembled a portfolio with a selection of your best workthat will be the starting point for the creation of a professional portfolio.

MED2080: PsyPsychology of Pchology of Persuasionersuasion (20 credits)PsyPsychology of Pchology of Persuasionersuasion has a strong communication component, emphasising the discursive elements of a variety ofwritten and visual texts. The module introduces a range of supporting theories, after which you work with models ofaudience consumption, reception and visual and discursive techniques aimed at producing impact, changing opinionsand behaviours. Analysing a variety of media and case studies, you will apply a number of rhetorical and persuasivetechniques to your own practice.

MED2102: SFX Theories and ContemporSFX Theories and Contemporary Design Conceptsary Design Concepts (20 credits)SFX Theories and ContemporSFX Theories and Contemporary Design Conceptsary Design Concepts provides you with the opportunity to explore and critically evaluatecontemporary SFX/VFX theories and design concepts in relationship to your own studio production practice. Withinthis environment, you will be given the opportunity to experience and respond to live briefs, discuss and presentprojects and concepts to industry specialists, and apply critical design concepts to your practice.

MED2285: Writing for the MediaWriting for the Media (20 credits)Writing for the MediaWriting for the Media provides practical experience and understanding of how to identify and promote the'newsworthy' elements of a potential story or feature and present it in the format and structure that journalists use.The module also equips you with the tools required to write other material common in public relations and other fieldsof communication. The writing techniques used by journalists are exactly those that a would-be PR practitioner needsto develop which is why the ability to write clearly and in the right sort of language is one of the skills most valued byemployers in public relations. This module is based around frequent writing exercises and feedback on style andcontent.

If you studied a Language module in Year 1, you may wish to study a further Language module in Year 2. This wouldform an integral part of your degree in place of one of the optional modules above.

This module requires you to conceive, plan and edit yourportfolio in preparation for a successful career in the advertising industry. This module also encourages you tocompete for top international and national awards to complement your array of creative work.

MED3060: AdvAdvertising: Critical Debatesertising: Critical Debates (20 credits)AdvAdvertising: Critical Debatesertising: Critical Debates explores critical debates in advertising that involve the relationship betweenconsumerism, identity and lifestyle. You will engage with a range of complex and challenging questions aroundconsumerism, lifestyle and identity, linking these concepts to sociocultural, economic and regulatory changes.

MED3244: Individual Production Project 1Individual Production Project 1 (20 credits)Individual Production Project 1Individual Production Project 1 offers you the opportunity to work under supervision, to develop a substantialadvertising project and undertake in-depth personal research relevant to that project. The work will enable you toexplore areas of interest, investigate topics and explore a range of presentational formats explicitly linked to theproject. Through the five key processes of ideas development, pre-production design, production scheduling,production and post production we will provide you with a professional framework in which to undertake a supervisedlarge-scale advertising campaign.

MED3245: Individual Production Project 2Individual Production Project 2 (20 credits)Individual Production Project 2Individual Production Project 2 offers you the opportunity to work under supervision, to develop a substantialadvertising project and undertake in-depth personal research relevant to that project. MED3057: EvEvent Managementent Management (20 credits)EvEvent Managementent Management looks at the organisational reasons for holding events and the techniques needed to manage thesesuccessfully. It will also look at how appropriate events are chosen and how venues are selected. This is a specialismwhich requires a high level of attention to detail and you will be expected to research relevant regulations, such asdisability and health and safety rules. Events can be key tools in the marketing communications mix. They range fromsmall highly targeted evenings for key stakeholders to major national conferences. All have key messages and definedaudiences.

MED3220: WWork Placementork Placement (20 credits)WWork Placementork Placement offers you the opportunity to identify, apply for and complete a work placement in the advertising orpublic relations industry. The placement will be for a minimum four weeks and you will have the opportunity forsubsequent reflection upon your experiences, work projects and skills gained in the process.

MED3225: DissertationDissertation (40 credits)DissertationDissertation offers you the opportunity to undertake an in-depth personal research project, under supervision, andexplore a range of research methodologies and presentational formats appropriate to the project. You will gain athorough knowledge of your chosen subject area and will be expected to shape that knowledge to produce a finalsubmission that demonstrates your ability to locate the material within the wider contexts of your discipline. Themodule will enable you to work independently, with a supervisor, to explore areas of contemporary academic interest,consider issues of current or historical industry practice, and critically analyse case studies or products within specificcultural and social contexts.

If you studied Language modules in Years 1 and 2, you may wish to study a further Language module in Year 3. Thiswould form an integral part of your degree in place of one of the optional 20 credit modules above.

Optional modules provide an element of choice within the programme curriculum. The availability of optional modulesmay vary from year to year and will be subject to minimum student numbers being achieved. Entry Requirements

120 UCAS Tariff points. The study or experience ofCreative Arts subjects, for example Art, Graphics orMedia, is preferred. Applicants with strong creativeportfolios may be credited with 32 UCAS Tariff pointstowards the total.

Example Offers

Some typical examples of how you can achieve 120 UCASTariff points are detailed below.

• A LA Leevvelsels – BBB;

• BTEC Extended Diploma (BTEC Extended Diploma (or combination of BTECor combination of BTECQCF qualifications)QCF qualifications) – Distinction, Distinction, Merit(DDM);

• Access to Higher Education DiplomaAccess to Higher Education Diploma – 45 credits atLevel 3, for example 24 credits at Distinction and21 credits at Merit. The required total can beattained from various credit combinations.

Please note, the above examples may differ from actualoffers made. A combination of A Level and BTEC awardsmay also be accepted.

As long as you have a minimum of two A Levels (orequivalent), there is no maximum number ofqualifications that we will accept UCAS points from. Thisincludes additional qualifications such as the WelshBaccalaureate and Extended Project Qualification (EPQ),AS Levels that haven't been continued to A Level, andGeneral Studies AS or A Level awards.

What are my career prospects?

Typical career paths could be in design studios, creativemedia agencies, advertising agencies or client side.Agencies could be specialist or full service where workincludes creating and managing campaigns, client andsupplier liaison, planning, research and evaluation or newbusiness development. Roles include art directors,copywriters, designers, account executives, marketingstrategists, media planners or buyers, and brandmanagers.

This degree is supported by a variety of advertisingagencies including PH Creative, Metal Magenta, ZealCreative and Saatchi & Saatchi. These rich industry linkshelp students develop networks with a variety ofprospective employers.

How can I enhance myemployability?

It is useful to consider, even before you apply, how youwill spend your time while studying and make the most ofyour university experience.

Optional, additional activities may be available on thisdegree which could help to prepare you for a stimulatingand rewarding career. These include:

• Sandwich YSandwich Yearear - you may have the opportunity toapply to complete a sandwich year placement aspart of your programme (usually the third year of afour year degree) and gain highly relevant workexperience;

Finance

Tuition Fees

If you are a prospective UK or EU student who will bejoining this undergraduate degree in academic year2017/18, the tuition fee will be £9,250 per annum.Tuition fees for international students enrolling on theprogramme in academic year 2017/18 are £11,575 perannum.

The University may administer a small inflationary rise intuition fees, in line with Government policy, insubsequent academic years as you progress through thecourse.

Financial Support
