Disappointment ForSports’ Fans But LotsOf Local Success
1
May was a massive month for sports fans in Northamptonshire. Firstly, onSaturday May 18th, coach loads of local residents departed from the village, buoyed by the anticipation of going to Wembley to watch the Cobblers playBradford City in the final of the division two play offs. A week later another massexodus took place as rugby fans headed to Twickenham to see the Saints front upagainst local rivals Leicester Tigers. The rest is history. Both weekends ended indefeat and disappointment though a great time was had by all and expectationremains high for next season. Perhaps a Wimbledon win for Andy Murray and aLions series victory in Australia might lessen the pain. I wonder what the odds onthat are!
At a local level however, there have been many successes. You can read aboutSteven Thompson who has qualified to represent the United Kingdom in theWorld Dance Championships in Las Vegas. The Annual Festival has taken placeonce again, enabling people to share their many and varied talents to appreciativefestival goers. As the Festival Fortnight finished, Nina Macpherson bowed out asChair of the Carnival Committee, but not before organising another exciting day, topped off by the wonderful ‘Lamb National.’ Thank you Nina.
Looking ahead, you can find out all about the Village Show, coming our way inSeptember. So now’s the time to get growing those vegetables and planning thosearts and crafts to make the show even better than last year.
Lastly, as the summer descends upon us and you go away on those long awaitedholidays, as well as the factor 30, don’t forget to pack a copy of Barton Today sothat we can add to those wonderful ‘Where In The World’ pictures you continueto amaze us with.

Wendy Williams writes.....Well, it was everything and morethan I expected, having gone from yoga once a week to takingpart in what claims to be ‘The Toughest Event on the Planet’.I overcame all my fears, except one, so feel absolutely thrilled.Although at the start I didn’t have a team, by obstacle one,Arctic Enema, I did. This was to jump into a skip full of ice, fullyimmerse yourself, go under a wooden slat and scramble outbefore the hypothermia set in. A team of men said ‘who areyou running with’, I said ‘myself’,‘well come on, join us’ theysaid…so quids in. From then on until the bitter end, it wasme and the 4th of May lads. They had aptly named their team,‘May the 4th be with you’ so had a picture of Yoda from StarWars printed on their t-shirts. The average time to completethe course is 3 and a half hours, we completed in 4. We did abig chunk of the course through hailstones and driving rain.We endured the challenge as a team and thank goodness wedid. When I do ‘Tough Mudder’ again next year, I will have ateam of my own. Some of the obstacles were quite horrific, but a lot of what I achieved is mostly in the mind, thoughstamina and physical strength played their part too. My focus, determination, family and friends are what kept me going andmy friend Louise Frohock, of Frohock Photography, came andtook some photographs for me on the day. There were timeswhen I panicked and wasn’t sure if I could carry on. At FunkyMonkey bars, over water with quite a drop, was a case of myupper body working fine, but I got extremely bad leg crampsfrom mile 8 to 12. As I dropped into the freezing waters, Iswam and clambered out, before a TM volunteer offered to callthe paramedics. I had come too far along my dream for thatto happen, so found my team mates and battled on.
At one point, I realised that the only way I was going to get offthis course was to, give up, NOT an option, by ambulance, orto ‘soldier on’. The fact that I was raising money for Help forHeroes, over £450, was another vital thing that kept megoing.
So, I had been zapped with 10,000 volts, scaled 2, 15 ft walls, slithered through the electric eel, been boa constrictedthrough very narrow tunnels into water and leapt over 2 ftflames into a mud pool the other side, ingesting mucky watersas I went. Then there was carry a large log, scaling Everest-a 15ft sloping drop, carry your fellow mudder and cage crawl.Unfortunately, I was not able to do the last 2 water obstaclesdue to such excruciating leg cramps. I was there every stepto cheer on my team mates, encouraging them to carry on. Iparticularly liked the kiss of mud, crawling nose to mud, withbarbed wire above you. Island hopping was another fun one, which were floating islands that you had to step across, overwater, to get to the other side. The icing on the cake has beenthat my family have all become much more involved with sportand I have continued my fitness regime and am taking part inthe Flitton Potato Race again in June, to raise funds for theNorthampton Deaf Childrens’ Society, as I did last year. I amvery thankful to the Earls Barton Junior School, for asking meto do a talk to their 175 pupils, about my Tough Mudderexperience and in prep for this taught myself powerpointpresentations. I didn’t do any of this to inspire people, just tofulfil a dream, but to do both, wow, a double dream. Thank youfor reading and hope you have enjoyed catching up on my newsof the Tough Mudder Challenge. Also to all the people whosponsored and gave me support and my complimentary sportsmassage from my Zumba teacher, Mark. I could not have doneit without my husband Fred, our son Kris, who did much ofthe videoing and taking photos during training and our daughterDaisy, who taught herself a great technique of liftinga 9kg tyre!

Barton Today July 2013
Well that’s another village festival fortnight finished. The fifthfestival in total and the third one that has been a full fortnight.Such is the support from village groups that we now need afortnight to pack in everything.
It all started at the very end of May with the new drama group,Earls Barton Players, a new group with a new play written for theoccasion performed at the Working Men’s Club. The productionwas a good start for the group and I am sure that we will beseeing a lot more from them in the future.
Earls Barton Museum organised guided historical walks roundthe village on the 4th and 5th June that were extremely wellsupported and also on the 5th Earls Barton’s own ‘Musical Roots’played a folk music concert at All Saints Church with RuthChapman that also proved popular and helped raise almost£500 towards the new staging for the church.
Over the weekend of the 7th and 8th there was the Art Exhibitionwith art, crafts and photography all on display. This was visitedby more than two hundred people over the two days and in all16 paintings were sold and several pieces of wood turning so agreat success. We were pleased to welcome the Mayor andMayoress of Wellingborough to the Artists’ reception and theywere very interested and impressed by the work on show. Thestandard seems to get better and better as the years go by. Theart exhibition is a massive undertaking in organisation for theFestival Team so it was extremely pleasing that it went so well.
On the same weekend the Under the Tower Drama Group heldtheir murder mystery play evenings with pig roast that provedvery popular. What can I say, both evenings sold out well aheadof time so clearly a huge success for UTTD.
On Saturday the 8th the Friends of All Saints also helda Petanque evening at London End Farm
that I am told went well despite itbeing freezing cold and in the
morning the Mothers Unionand Traidcraft held events
at the Church Hall.
Tuesday the 11th sawanother first. Our firstever foray into theworld of cinema inEarls Barton withthe showing of thefeature film‘Quartet’ in thechurch hall. Thiswas done veryprofessionallyand havingmissed this at the
cinema earlier inthe year we were not
disappointed with thestandard of the
showing. This willbecome another festival
regular I am sure.
Thursday saw ourstand up comedy nightat the WMC with Chris Turnersupporting Northamptonshire borncomedian Andrew Bird. It was a great night with bothcomedians hitting the spot from the start and there wasnon-stop laughter for the whole show. Definitely one ofthe best ever!!
On Friday afternoon the Methodist Church hosted theInfant and Junior School concert to a packed house ofmums, dads and grandparents. Again this has become atradition and always goes down well with the strictlyunbiased (of course) audience.
Throughout the fortnight we had the ever popular Labyrinthin place on the recreation field and there were events held atthe Library on a number of days with Danny the Reading Dogand the Eager Readers club.
Saturday the 15th saw the Carnival yet again playing‘dodge the shower’ and succeeding pretty well to drawin a good crowd to the rec. This was the last Carnivalto be staged by the current team led by NinaMacPherson. We hope that with the help of the FestivalTeam the Carnival can be kept alive into the future butit will require other people to come forward to getinvolved to make sure that happens. We will be talkingto Nina, who is also a member of the Festival team, about what needs doing and looking for volunteers toundertake specific tasks for next year. More of that in thefuture though and for now we must thank Nina for leading theevent in recent years and keeping it going in difficult times.
Saturday evening saw the performance by Earls Barton Musicof their entertaining Small Screen, Big Screen show of filmand TV songs to a sell out audience in the MethodistChurch. Another success for EBM and a great finale to theFestival Fortnight.
The team would like to thank every organisation thatstaged an event in the festival and every volunteerthat helped them, and us, in any way large or smallto make the fortnight the success it was. TheFestival Team would like to particularly thank theWMC, the Methodist Church and All Saints Churchfor the use of their buildings. Wecouldn’t do any of it withoutyou and your help maygo largely unnoticedby those that attendthe events but itdoesn’t gounappreciatedwe assure you.
Here’s to nextyear!!

Nina Macpherson writes…Well - we did it again - in the rain!There was an excellent village turnout for this year’s carnival.The sun shone for the parade and there was only one downpourduring the afternoon and even that didn’t stop Mark and hisZumba girls from dancing! The lamb national was fantastic -andthe farmer was quite nice too! Now for some thank yous;
• Alice for being a beautiful queen and Kasey and Kerry-Annfor being stunning princesses
• Kerry at Delikuts for the beautiful queen and princess hair
• Lindsey and Craig for judging the procession-it’s really hard sometimes
• A.E.S -for pulling the queen’s float.
• Nick Burles and Roy Leighton for their fantastic commentary throughout the afternoon.
• all of the marshals - it really wouldn’t happen if you didn’t volunteer to help
• thanks also to Sam my sidekick - another great 12 hour day
This is a fantastic village event. Please help to keep it going.Wollaston has lost their carnival. After last year’s horrendousweather, we managed to salvage ours and keep going! As Ihave said, I am happy to stay on and help butcannot do everything. We need volunteersthat are available on carnival day. Thefestival committee are happy to help tokeep it going but again they arealready very busy organising thefestival fortnight.

From Olive Oil to Bamboo Socks! Our fairtrade shop keeps on adding to the range of Traidcraftproducts on sale so do come and see us! Thought it would be good tohear more about some of the stories behind the things we sell…
Riziq, an olive farmer and father of three from the Salfit district ofthe Palestinian West Bank says ‘Fairtrade has made me optimistic.’He says that life has been very hard with access to markets in Gazaand the Gulf states closed in the 1990s, destruction of olive groves, confiscation of irrigation pipes and agricultural equipment andsettlement on their land. Riziq explains that people have faced a longlist of these problems, but the process of marketing their Zaytounolive oil through fairtrade makes him optimistic as there is now asolution for the problems and also new markets for these high qualityproducts have opened up in Europe. He says “by buying our olive oil,you are saving our lives, the future of our children and you arehelping to save our land.” So do come try the olive oil and the otherdelicious Zaytoun products we stock.
Our Bamboo socks range was introduced in December and wereextremely popular, selling out veryquickly. We now havesome lovely summerdesigns and colours indifferent sizes, thebamboo makes themvery soft, breathableand comfortable towear.

A tribute to a veryspecial person
Debbie would have been known to so many of you in the village over so many years. Our first
two children, Natalie and Georgie attended the Infant and Junior schools and are now both
at University. Of our younger children, Evie is now at Wollaston School and Joe is in year
6 at the Junior School.
Debbie was active in the village having served on the PTA of both schools over a period of
the many years our children were there.
In March 2012 she was diagnosed with Vasculitis, an autoimmune disease which started in a
fairly innocuous way but became more and more persistent and difficult to treat. In January
this year Debbie died in the John Radcliffe Hospital ITU after a courageous fight.
My family have been left without an amazing mother and me, my best friend.
The 'Barton Ladies' as I call them then came up with an brilliant suggestion. We would
produce a recipe book to celebrate Debbie's love of baking and desserts which would include
all the fantastic cakes, desserts and biscuits we have been eating most of our lives. After
months of hard work the result is spectacular and on sale for just £5.00 per copy.
Many of you may have seen the Vasculitis stall at the carnival but some may not. We are
therefore selling the books at Jeyes the Chemist and Pink Rose Beauty for a month or so to
see how much money we can raise.
Good friends and family raised ALL the money to design and print the books so of the £5.00
I hope you pay for the book, precisely £5.00 goes to the charity, not a penny less.
I believe that if Debbie's condition had been diagnosed earlier, the end result may have
been different. Vasculitis UK are a registered charity and spend their time liaising with
GPs nationwide to raise awareness of this horrible condition.
We are now rebuilding our shattered lives but we just may be able to help others going
through this nightmare.
Please have a look at the books, the
recipes are brilliant AND it's for
a very good cause!
If you can’t get out, call Sally
on 01604 810478 or me on 07946 600007
and we will deliver a copy to your
house at NO extra cost. You can also

to order copies or just comment
generally.
Thank you for taking the time

Barton Today July 2013

Well what a fabulous Bank Holiday Weekend of weather we had for the Festival of Transport; wellieswere worn up to the Friday evening and intrepid 'volunteers' sent out regularly to look at the conditionof the ground, plus tightening straps etc on the party tents - such was the amount of heavydownpours we had, and the strength of the wind. At one point we were sitting in the (stationary)cab of the Gist truck, and were fairly rocking around. It gave us a taster of what it must be like todrive in such conditions. But up early on Saturday and what a change; no puddles to be found, thewind had dropped and the sun came out. Sunday was tee shirts and shorts, the wind came backon the Monday, but it remained dry, with the rain returning on the Tuesday!! Someone up there waswatching over us!
The weather certainly played its part in the event, with some exhibitors not coming due we're sureto the awful conditions on the Friday, and as they didn't ring to find out how the site was, they missedout. But never mind, we had plenty else going on including a visit on the Saturday morning byAnnabel and Mark from Radio Northampton on their regular Treasure Hunt slot. We had no idea ofthis until we heard on the radio that they were on their way - with the answer to the clue being theWNAA stand. Knights of Old were at the Festival with the Air Ambulance volunteers, for the launchof one of their lorries advertising the service down both sides of the trailer unit. The lorry wasn'tfinished until 5pm on the Friday, and we understand the bosses hadn't even seen it! Amazingly thenext clue was solved at lightning speed, and so they had to leave their bacon butties behind!
Our new exhibit by Gist International Hauliers with their Road Safety Demonstration programmecertainly attracted plenty of interest from children and adults alike, a great chance to learn aboutthe hazards of driving these large articulated trucks, and the limited vision the drivers have of othervehicles close to them. The highlight being able to climb up in the cab and get a driver’s eye view. The cones set out in front showed their visual sightings, and the trucks stopping distance - I don'tthink we always appreciate these things when feel we are being 'held up' by a lorry. The childrenalso got free goody bags and high vis vests, which were so popular that Jason, Kevin and Sarahran out of them during Monday!
The Fire Show drew the public in to their area with not only a brilliant wide range of fire appliances, but also the demonstrations they did in the ring. From bbq fires to burning car rescues, it was very visual but also sobering to see the effects –let’s hope it makes us all that bit more careful.
So overall we had a good weekend, with the Sunday tops for weather and attendances by classic car entries. Youth Club NewsBarton Today July 2013

Kirsty Austin reports…In May a group of 14 junior youth club members, plus family andfriends, took on the 9 mile Waendel Walk challenge. The weather was cool but bright, theatmosphere was buzzing and everyone was eager to have a go. After the first half hour theconversation went along these lines "Can we stop for lunch?" "I need a wee!" "Are we nearlythere yet?" "Can we get an Ice cream?" and "PHOAR it smells in this field!"
...Along the way we encountered a variety of things to spice up the journey; there weredonkeys, Morris dancers, a bunch of crazy mums dressed as 'Where's Wally' andeventually the ever welcome sight of the ice cream van to restore energy levels. Anothergreat source of interest and amusement, among the youngsters, appeared to be thedecaying remnants of a mouse, swan, fish and one of my all time favourite pastimes'flick the cow pat at your neighbour with a stick' (the old ones are always the best).
We all managed to complete the walk in a mere 5 HOURS!!! I must point out that one ofour crew used a mobile phone app to record the exact distance travelled which turnedout to be 10.2 miles. We felt quite cheated to receive certificates stating we had onlymanaged 9 miles.

It was 6.00 am on Saturday 11th May 2013 as we started to haulequipment to Mill Lane (it took three loads) . Cooking area andgazebos erected. B.B.Q. in place ready to feed the hungry walkers. We then had time to erect 30 flags of different countries as walkerslike to see the flag of their country flying. All done by 9.30am. We nowhad a little time before our first customers arrived which was about10am.We then had a steady stream throughout the day selling out ofchocolate and burgers. This year, we are donating £400.00 to theLuncheon Clubs. Many thanks to Kay and Alan our neighbours whosliced 500 bread rolls for us, to Philip my eldest who helped us to setup and take down the equipment. This year four of our helpersdropped out so we were a bit short on man power. Ann our otherneighbour offered to man the card stamping. At one time she was sobusy that a German soldier on the walk helped her. He soon had thewalkers in an orderly line. Thanks to Mick and Matthew who assistedwith the cooking, Marg and Pat the servers and Katie who stepped into take the money.

Local boy Steven Thompson has been dancing since the age of three. In August this year, a dream comes true when he travels to Las Vegas with the other members of his all-male dance crew Cartel, to compete inthe world championships. Against some very talented opposition, Cartel have qualified to represent the United Kingdom.
What a fantastic achievement for Steven and what an honour for the village of Earls Barton. Unlike other countries taking part whoserepresentatives are centrally funded, Cartel have to be self-financing. We are hoping that the people of Earls Barton can rally round and help toraise money for this very worthy cause. To begin with, you are invited to go along to Earls Barton’s Working Men’s Club on Saturday 27th Julywhen a disco is being held from 7.30pm until late. Proceeds will go towards Cartel’s travel and associated costs. Tickets for the disco cost £3.00.As well as being able to dance the night away yourselves, the members of Cartel will be also giving their own breathtaking performance.
Also, if there are any businesses or individuals out who can support Cartel in any way, they would love to hear from you. If you wish to purchasetickets or want any further information, you can either contact Sarah or Emma Thompson on 01604 813781.
Tickets can be purchased from the Working Men's Club.
Let’s make their dream come true.
Editor’s note…So Earls Barton’s very own Steven Thompson becomes aninternational dancer and joins the elite of international over 60s cricketer Ray Waite. Perhaps readers could let us know about any other internationals that the village has produced.

We’re all going on a summer holiday!Well we really do in the theatre becausesoon the theatres will be going dark(which means the theatre closes itsstage) and no more performances willtake place until it opens up again… Butdon’t worry we have some great peopleperforming this month at our local theatres so let’s have alook! It is also the time when things come to an end – endof school term, end of theatre runs, end of an era. I wouldlike to say a big thank you to someone who gave me a bighelping hand and start in theatre in acting, directing andstage management. I know they don’t like a fuss but I justwant to wish them all the best and a very big thank you foreverything you done!
We start with a very funny man Jason Manford (5th – 6th July) atthe Derngate. "WHAT MANFORD DOES BEST: CLASSIC, CHIRPY-CHAPPIE STAND-UP" THE GUARDIAN. Back with brand new showFirst World Problems, enjoy an evening of hilarious anecdotes, comicmisunderstandings and audience banter, all delivered with Jason’slikeable charm and teasingly intelligent wit.
"LAID-BACK CHARM & SHARP TURN OF PHRASE YOU CAN'TMANUFACTURE" DAILY TELEGRAPH. Don’t miss the star of the“odd one in” and “show me the funny” coming to the Northamptonthis month.
Now it’s time for some dancing very late at night! No I’m notvolunteering this time… I’ll let the cast of a Midnight Tango toentertain you! "A TRIUMPH – HIGHLY RECOMMENDED" DailyTelegraph. Arlene Phillips and Adam Spiegel present the stars ofStrictly Come Dancing Vincent Simone and Flavia Cacace at theDerngate Theatre. (8th – 13th July). Vincent Simone and FlaviaCacace have dazzled television audiences for seven series of the BBC’sStrictly Come Dancing with their stunning Tango routines. Now theyhave created their own live show - Midnight Tango – a breathtakingevening bringing all the drama, sensuality and elegance of this mostexciting of dance forms to life. Set in a late night bar in downtownBuenos Aires and featuring some of the finest Tango dancers in theworld and live music, Midnight Tango, takes you on a journey intothe heart of this intoxicating city. As danger and excitement, joy andjealousy, pain and passion all combine – this is a spectacular andexplosive evening not to be missed!
Ok so now something for the little ones. Now this show was at theCastle earlier in the year and I know it’s a great show. Milkshake LIVEis at the LIGHT HOUSE Theatre on 24th July. Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Trevor Skidmore feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing
is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do
the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Earls Barton, Nothampton and Wellingborough areas
is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal
satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Trevor a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

PUP DATE. . . . Sandy has been enjoying free runs again, following her being spayed. She especially enjoyedhaving a free run in Irchester Country Park with Guide Dog Puppy friend Pippa. Both pupswere really good together and responded straight away to the whistle to come back to us.They also resisted the temptation to jump in the large muddy ponds, thankfully!!
But she has found her naughty side again, deciding to dig up our carpet, and also eating part ofher wicker toy box. We were told this is due to her hormones going all over the placefollowing her operation. So she has had to go back to being in her puppy crate overnight.Hopefully by the time you read this she will have calmed down again and become moresettled.
Sandy was invited to go to the Mad Market at EB Junior School in June. The photo shows herwith the children who were our guides. We were tempted into buying cakes and a couple ofbooks while we were there, and all of the children enjoyed seeing Sandy again, and giving herlots of fuss.
We have been given mid July as Sandy’s date for going to Big school at Leamington for the next part of her training. We think she isready to learn all the new skills she will be needing to hopefully go on to becoming a Guide Dog.
Perhaps you will have seen Sandy at the Carnival, and also some of the other Guide Dog pups, which will have given you plenty ofchances for a final fuss with her.

How you can Help So many people and individuals are volunteering to help the NC TLC Trust and this year this includes businesses too. This year Tollers solicitors’ nominated Charity of the Year is National Children’s Tumour Leukaemia Cancer Trust.
During the year Tollers will be undertaking a number of fundraising activities and recently had a dress down day to raise funds for NC TLC Trust.
On 19th July the charity is also asking other companies and organisations to raise money by wearing their oneises for the day and raise awareness on the day as well.
Prince and Princess Prom It is the Summer and schools, colleges and universities across the country host leavers and graduation proms, but for some of thechildren who the NC TLC Trust help often do not get to enjoy these occasions due to their life shortening conditions.
The NC TLC Trust are now this year looking to hold a ‘Prince and Princess Prom’ for the charity children and their families onSaturday, September 28th, so all the children can enjoy the prom experience, and be treated to an amazing evening.
Andi Daw from the NC TLC Trust said : “The charity are now organising a prom for all our babies on this date as many will notreach their own prom and have missed many parties and school days out due to ill health and treatment.
Ollie's family have asked that anyone offering to help Ollie could offer help with this beautiful prom.”
The charity is also looking for help for the event and they are looking for donations for gift bags for each child and mini trophies foreveryone of them to acknowledge their bravery.
Entertainers are also being sought for the event as well as prom dresses and suits.
Andi explained how the charity would like to make the event magical and anything and anyone is being looked for to help with tomake this prom special
She added: “We are also looking for a princess and Prince Charming to meet our VIP babies when they arrive. We want to makethis an event for them to remember and want to roll out the red carpet for our VIP guests.”
If anyone can help please contact Andi at NCTLC towers on(01604)811025 or email [email protected].
Dreams Can Come True The NC TLC Trust support families of children with childhood Cancersand Leukemia in so many ways – including making dreams come trueeven those by royal appointment!
Ollie’s family from Leicester approached the charity in Earls Barton twoyears ago after Ollie aged 5, had been relapsing with leukemia.
Unfortunately after all the chemotherapy treatment earlier this year hisparents received the devastating news that it had spread to the centralnervous system and his prognosis was that it was terminal and he wasgiven only weeks to live.
But life for Ollie is continuing despite this prognosis and he has, likemany boys of his age, hopes and dreams and Andi Daw from thecharity, who has been supporting the family started to work on makingone of those dreams become a reality.
Andi explained: “Ollie's biggest wish was tea with The Queen, afterhuge pleas on Facebook a vintage tea party was kindly donated by the Ladies of Barton but still no queen impersonator. But withthe help of Karen Rogers, Stage Door, where Helen Mirren plays the queen at present in the production of ' The Audience' andafter a cheeky phone call Helen Mirren agreed to meet Ollie and help make his wish come true.”
The family on the day were treated like royalty too with a Limo provided by JP Limousines in Earls Barton to take them to watchHelen’s performance and a local florist Lee Berril provided the flowers for Ollie to present to his Queen for the day, Helen Mirren.
Ollie had teacakes and a glass of Coke with his Queen for the day and after meeting with her Corgis he was knighted Sir Ollie!
Andi added : “All his other final wishes had to be cancelled due to his prognosis. This one lifted not just him but his whole familyand has given this amazing lad 5 minutes in the limelight hitting national and international papers.”
He deserves this so very much. He has been brave and courageous for many years now with his family beside him and fullydeserves the recognition he has had. Everyone at NCTLC is over the moon to have made his wish come true and to hear and seehim so happy at such a difficult and painful time.”
She added: “The day Ollie gains his angel wings will be a sad day but knowing his greatest wish was achieved by us will hopefullycomfort all those involved with Ollie especially his family.”
At the charity we ask for people touched by Ollie’s story to help us to grant similar wishes for other children, and ask you to visitour website at www.nctlctrust.com to see what events we have coming up and if you visit www.goldengiving.com to purchasetickets for these events or support other challenges people are undertaking to help keep the work and support of the charity on-going.

Here at All Saints church we are inviting the whole village community to join us in aunique event in support of a charity that affects every single one of us.
CAN have been around for forty years dealing with drug and alcohol as well ashousing issues through the supported housing team and the young peoples servicesand they need our support as much as we need theirs.
What we want to do is to raise much needed money for this worthwhile charity bytaking part in a sleep out at the rec playing fields and we want people in the villageto join us and experience what it is like to be homeless and at the same time raiselots of money through sponsorships for this charity.
What we have also done is we have invited the staff of CAN to come to our villageand educate us on the services they provide. They will be bringing staff from theirsupported housing team as well as their young peoples services team to give outinformation and answer questions anyone might have.
During the week commencing 1st of July CAN will set up a stall in the Co-op andthere will be leaflets and donation buckets throughout the village. A large number ofbusinesses in Earls Barton have come forward with great conviction and sponsoredthis unique event and as you can see from all the messages of support the responsefrom the business community has been fantastic.
On the night of Saturday the 6th of July we will all be taking part in the sleep out inthe rec behind the church.
Many businesses like the Co-operative and Lees Butchers and Pink rose Beautyhave made a commitment that all their staff will be participating in the sleep out. StJohns Ambulance has also committed their team to do the same.
Stalls will be set up by CAN on the wreck and manned by professional staff to offeradvice and assistance to everyone. Even if you cannot do the sleep out we wouldencourage you to come along in the evening and support us in any way you can.
One rule that we stipulate is that this is a serious attempt to experience sleepingrough and everyone will be required to use a sleeping bag or cardboard which will beprovided by the Co-operative. No tents or gazebos or campfires will be allowed.
To open the event we have invited the New Testament gospel choir fromNorthampton who will be joined by a gospel choir from Wellingborough singing forus at 7-30pm and this is not to be missed. This will be followed by prayers, led byRev Miranda Hayes, Priest in Charge, for
everyone taking part and for all the people of Earls Barton.
We will also have the Outreach interfaith Street Pastor team from Northampton ledby Keith Dragon coming over to assist and share the experiences they encounter ona daily basis with homeless people on the streets of Northampton.
The church hall will be open all night and tea and coffee and soup and rolls whichhave all been donated for free by the Co-operative will be available throughout thenight and served by the St John’s Ambulance crew of Earls Barton who have beenfantastic in their support and who will also cover all first aid issues.
At this stage we have no idea how many people will be coming. A number of peoplehave told us that that they have started advertising the event on social media andeven the Northamptonshire police have put it on their Facebook site.
We have made every effort to make sure everyone will be safe and well looked afterand hopefully enjoy the occasion by having Stewards as well as a police presencethroughout the night so please come and join us and we the church of All Saints willgive you all a warm welcome.
If anyone wishes to know how to get a registration form and sponsorship form orany queries they can contact Dave Sharp on 07783 182412 or email:[email protected] or you can ask at the Co-op in the village.

The start of the summer has been an incredibly busy time in school. Our childrenhave once again been performing in their class assemblies. They love thisopportunity to share their learning with their parents and so far we have seenassemblies on Isambard Kingdom Brunel, growing plants and friendship
Our youngest children walked up to the allotments and were greeted by several allotmentholders who kindly shared their knowledge with the children. It was all vey exciting. They evencame back to school with some produce; I’m still waiting for it to be turned into a rhubarb pie!
We have had class photos taken, but it was much more fun this year as we chose to havethem done in a contemporary style. We can’t wait to receive the proofs, especially the staffone! It will be a photo to treasure as it will be the last one featuring Mrs Babb. She has decidedto retire after 9 years as our Deputy Head. We will be sad to say our goodbyes, but we arebusy making plans for how to celebrate her time with us (top secret at the moment of course!).
After the Whitsun break the children in key stage one began learning about minibeasts andwe had a bit of a WOW moment in school when Zoolab arrived with their snake, tree frog, cockroach and rat, amongst other creatures! The children were enthralled and not a bit scared, although some adults chose to leave the room! Others were determined to overcome theirphobias. We held a ‘minibeast’ day to coincide with this visit. The children really got into thespirit of the day and dressed up as ladybirds, butterflies, spiders and other such ‘bugs’. Duringthe day they took part in a variety of minibeast themed activities including decorating spiderbiscuits!
Despite the lack of sunshine our annual June Rose Day, held on 8 June, was a great successagain this year. Our King (Daniel), Queen (Molly-Mae) and ten year 2 attendants looked superbas they processed on to the field and took their placesin front of their friends and parents. My predecessor,Mrs Sue Adams, kindly returned to the school tocrown our royal couple. Then classes, dressed onceagain in their ‘bug’ costumes, paraded in front of the‘royal’ party before the King and Queen declared thefete open. Later in the morning our year 2 children puton a super display of country dancing. There weresome exciting games and stalls around the fieldincluding a bouncy castle, guess the staff competition, smack the rat and a marbles game. However, one ofthe highlights had to be ‘soak the teacher’!
Hopefully many of you saw our June Rose Day royalsleading our group in the village carnival procession. Itwas our final opportunity to show off our inspiredcostumes. As I write this the event has yet to take place – I hope the sun played its part onthe day!

Christopher Heaton-Harris ReportsMany foreigners, looking in at the GreatBritain, tend to think we are a very oddlot. Many of us are superstitious and wedo have a number of traditions that makeus seem eccentric to outsiders.
In politics this view holds true.
There is the obvious example that we’verecently had: the Queens Speech. This is where a bunch ofCommoners slam the door on the Queen’s representative, whosummons us nonetheless to go to the Chamber of the House ofLords, where only about a hundred of the 650 MPs can fit in, to beread a speech about the Government’s programme by the Queen, who has no input into the speech at all and then we head back tothe House of Commons to talk about it for a week.
There are some other quirky goings on in the House of Commons.Lots of people know that we have prayers at the start of each day,but few know that after the first couple of prayers, we all turnround to face the walls to finish our praying. To be quite honest, Ihave no idea why we do this – it is just the way it has always beendone.
There are even some bizarre traditions that go on in individualParliamentary seats.
I am particularly pleased I did try for the Parliamentary seat ofChichester. Here, whoever wins the seat, after the result isannounced, but before they can leave the count, the newly elected(or re-elected) Member of Parliament has a very important task tofulfil: he or she has to sing – and it is not just any song – it is the“Ode to the Turnip”.
I’m also fortunate not to be the Member of Parliament forWycombe. The good folk there have a particular tradition there thatgoes back years and ensures that their chosen representative inthe House of Commons doesn’t get too fat on the excesses thatare supposedly available in Westminster.
Each year, in the Spring, the people of Wycombe gather on thestreets in front of the Town Hall where they watch this specialannual event – where they weigh their MP. The current MP, SteveBaker, is a good friend of mine and beat the scales this year andthis was celebrated locally as if a new Prince had been born. I’mnot sure if there is a punishment for putting weight on...
Personally I love the fact we still have these slightly strangetraditions, but I haven’t heard of that many local ones. Are thereany...?

Brian Emerson writesAs part of Churches Together in Wellingborough there is a SchoolsChristian Assembly Team. The team takes assemblies in schoolsin the Wellingborough Area from Ecton to Pytchley and Raunds toIrchester as well as a good number of primary and junior schoolsin Wellingborough, especially, but not exclusively, to those schoolswhich are not linked to the Church of England.
Every month the assembly is different, written by a differentperson, but with a theme running through the school year. Lesleyand I are part of that team but when we take assemblies in theschools in Earls Barton we do our own!
This year in the Wellingborough team we have been thinking aboutKing David of Israel. Considered to be the greatest king in Israel’shistory he had a son, Solomon, who was considered to be thewisest. We have expressions about both of them in English:-“Slaying giants” as a metaphor for conquering difficult problemscomes from the story of David and Goliath and we also talk aboutpeople having the “wisdom of Solomon” when they can solveseemingly intractable problems – read the story in the OldTestament part of the Bible 1 Kings chapter 3 verses 16 to 28.
While these two are celebrated as the greatest kings in the historyof Israel they were not without their faults. David effectivelymurdered Bathsheba’s husband and committed adultery with her.Eventually marrying her, she was the mother of Solomon. Absalomfell out with his father King David and rebelled against him. Wewould call it a dysfunctional family. Eventually David became proudof the importance and numbers of his army and yet turned back toGod and asked for forgiveness, just as he had done over hisrelationship with Bathsheba.
Solomon was proud of his riches and eventually made marriageswith daughters of kings of surrounding nations. Solomon neverrepented of this mistake. The alliances led to a watering down ofthe faith that had kept the nation strong and to the nation beingsplit into two kingdoms.
What lessons are there for us in these stories? Don’t think that theimportant thing in life is to be fantastically rich and if we are “well-off” not to be ostentatious about it. Be careful about who youmake alliances with and be careful that they do not affect your ownstandards. Make sure that you keep your family with you and thatyou treat its members properly. Be honest and acknowledge if youhave made mistakes and vow not to make the same mistake again.Stand up to the prevailing culture around you where necessary anddon’t get ensnared by things which you know, deep down, arewrong.
The reason why these two kings are still honoured andremembered, David more than Solomon, is because they wereboth, in the main, wise, generous, just, considerate, forgiving, honest, kind, peaceable, humble and faithful. These are charactertraits which have nothing to do with how rich they were or theirposition in society. They are therefore good examples for us tofollow. That’s the message we have been trying to get across tothe children this year, but it is a message for us all – which is whyI wanted to share it with you this month.

Earls Barton United Under 10s
On the Spring Bank holiday, thirty three players,
parents, grandparents and siblings set of for Pwhelli
in North Wales for the ESF Festival of Football.
Journey times varied from four to nine hours, but we
all met fresh on the Saturday morning for the start
of the tournament. The games were played at
Porthmadog Football Club on the edge of the
stunning Snowdonia National Park with views of
Snowden.
Over the two days the boys played ten games
against opposition from the Porthmadog, Liverpool,
Manchester, Peterborough and Leicester. The boys
performed well and improved as the weekend
went on. The level of determination when the
whistle blew was a credit to our team, although
some of the opposition were technically better, the
boys got stuck in and never gave up.
On the Saturday evening we all got together for a
BBQ in the sun; the boys played football once
again. It was a superb team effort with all parents
chipping in with collecting, cooking and clearing
up the food. Some parents chose to retire to bed
early and some decided to make a night of it.
The weekend concluded with a presentation from
1966 hero Sir Geoff Hurst, I do believe the parents
were more impressed than the boys!! I have to say
what a credit the boys were to themselves, their
families and the club. Their behaviour over the
entire weekend was excellent.
Finally I would like to thank Antony and Martin for
all their hard work this season on coaching the
boys. Roll on next season.

Earls Barton Utd Under 15’s Girls
My name is Cliff Elliott and I have been coaching Earls Barton teams now since 1999. and these girls, since 2009, following on
from Angie Foster who was not able to continue in this role. At first I was just meant to be helping with the training, along with
another coach, but after three weeks, he just left and I was left with this group of girls. Angie asked if I would be their new coach
but, to be honest, I didn't want to commit to this role, as I was busy with other things, through work etc. However, these girls
turned up every week so I knew they were keen to learn, and for me, that was enough.
Trust me, it wasn't the easiest of jobs! To give you a comparison it was like having the Jamaican Bobsled Team.
I was up against it, big time! Our first 11-a-side game was approaching so I had to work hard to find out who was best in
defence, midfield etc. In our first game I showed the girls, on paper, where they should be when the game starts. The trouble is
they were still standing there, in those same positions, while the other team were on the attack ! I had to shout to tell them they
were allowed to move. It did make me laugh.
2009/10 we finished 2nd from bottom and the following season 2010/11, we did the same.
Sounds bad but it really wasn't, our
football was getting better by the week as
we went on to win the Weekley Rovers
Summer Tournament without losing a
single game!
2011/12 was another good season. We
had lost our main striker to a rival team but
were fortunate enough to gain another
striker in Stacey Copus, who went on to be
our top scorer and one of the leagues
leading scorers. Our football had gone up
another level. We finished 3rd that season
so, as you can see, still improving. The
team were forming really well and were
now gaining confidence in their ability.
2012/13 is when things really clicked. We
gained sponsorship from Little India
Restaurant, from the village, who enabled us to buy a fantastic new kit, many thanks to them for that. Also, new on board, was
my friend of nearly 20 years, Scott Bromwich. Scott was reluctant at first because he had just finished years coaching his son's
team but I managed to persuade him to join us and our combined knowledge of attacking and defensive football turned out
to be a great combination. Plus, as his daughter Lucy also plays for the team it wouldn't be fair if he didn't, would it?. Another
newcomer to the squad this season was Lucy Attwood, who has added extra quality in midfield.
We had a great season, most goals scored, least conceeded and finished 2nd in the league.
Best of all though, was reaching the CUP FINAL. Although nervous on the day, and that was just me and Scott, the girls went on
to play the best football in all the time I've been with them. This was against a team that had won the league and also had
scored in every game for the last four seasons. We played them 'off the park' winning 2-0, with the goals scored by Stacey
Copus and Summer Keightley.
We went on to have the most successful season EVER by an Earls Barton
Female Team.
WEEKLEY ROVER SUMMER TOURNAMENT WINNERS 2010/11
LEAGUE RUNNERS UP - 2012/13
LEAGUE CUP WINNERS - 2012/13
FAIR PLAY TROPHY WINNERS - 2012/13
This team is going from strength to strength and continue to do the village
proud. It is an honour to be part of this project to put EARLS BARTON GIRLS
FOOTBALL TEAM up there with the best of them.

The Feel Good FactoryWell if you want to feel good you should have been at the Earls Barton Carnival! I was amazed just how many people had
entered in the parade. Looking around us at all the costumes and props it was fantastic to think of the number of hours that
people had put into preparing for the Carnival. There seemed to be more people involved this year, and yet there were just as
many people watching as ever. Truly a great end to the festival fortnight. If you missed it this year – get it in your diary for next
year.
Did you know that the largest organ in your body is your skin? Summer is in the way and we often show a bit ore skin in the summer
than the winter. What can you do to get your skin summer ready?
Exfoliate - Why? Exfoliation removes the build up of the dead, dry skin cells from the surface of your skin. This will make it brighter,
softer, smoother and fresher. How? Use a body scrub with a loofah or washcloth gently rubbing into your skin in the shower in
circular movements.
After exfoliating always make sure you hydrate your skin. Regular moisturising will help to prevent your skin losing its moisture
content making it look and feel better. Don’t forget to hydrate your skin from within by drinking plenty of water.
Your feet may also need a bit of attention after spending months wrapped in woolly socks and heavy boots. Give your feet a good
soak in warm water, adding a pinch of mineral salt to rejuvenate tired feet. After soaking, give them a good scrub with a bristle
brush. Use a foot file to remove any tough calloused skin on your heels. Your feet need to be moisturised too. Massage a rich
cream into your feet. The skin on your feet is much thicker than anywhere else on your body so you will need a rich moisturiser.
If you can do this late in the evening pop on a pair of old socks to keep the moisturiser on your feet all night – you will notice the
difference in the morning.
So take a little time out for yourself. Just preparing your skin will give it a glow and make you feel better. If you have a little more
time (and money) you could pop along to see Gemma and Amy at Pink Rose who will happily give your feet a wonderful pedicure.
Next month I am hoping to share with you some more fantastic success members of WeightWatchers have seen at the Earls Barton
meetings.
If you would like any information on WeightWatchers please do contact me at [email protected] or go to the website
www.weightwatchers.co.uk. If you are thinking about joining us but are not sure it is for you, pop along to one of the meetings at
St John’s Ambulance on Tuesdays at 7pm or Wednesdays at 9.30am and you can just sit in for one to see what we are about and
decide if it is right for you – no obligation to join. The ProPoints plan is so flexible anyone can follow it and lose weight. If you have
any information you would like to share in future editions of the Feel Good Factory then please do get in touch.
More from me next month, Susan Price – Your local Triple Diamond WeightWatchers Leader.
As you know, Mike Grant is standing down as Editor of The Tower, so I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to reverse the roles and interview himon your behalf …
Me: How long have you lived in the village and how did you get involved with The Tower?
Mike: I’ve lived in Earls Barton for nine years and I was on the Parochial Church Council when the previous Vicar, Rev Michael Webber, reeledme in! Working with Michael, my first project was to design and set up the All Saints Church website. As this was my first website I learneda lot. I’ve been Editor of the magazine now for five years, three of them as sole Editor. But I want to emphasize that it is a team effort, lots ofhard work and we have a laugh.
Me: The Tower is obviously very important to you. Why is that?
Mike: I’m aware of the history of The Tower as it’s been an important part of the village for 44 years. It serves a genuine purpose not only forAll Saints and our village but also for ecumenical relations and has given me a wonderful view of Earls Barton life over the years. Not only doI feel part of the community but it’s a privilege to see how so many do so much to make Earls Barton a great place to live.
Me: It seems to me from what you say that you are sorry to be standing down. Is that so?
Mike: Absolutely, but as one’s circumstances change one has to respond accordingly. I’ve always felt I was the custodian of The Tower and Ilike championing the village, but now is the time to move on. Things always have to evolve and perhaps now’s the time for the next transition.
Me: And have you got personal satisfaction from all your hard work?
Mike: I have enjoyed it all and am very proud of The Tower. Everyone writes in such a heartfelt way, it’s been a privilege and humblingexperience to edit it. And while I’m still around I’ll be supporting the next editor.
On behalf of us all, thank you very much Mike for all your hard work, enthusiasm and care. And we wish you every success and happiness inwherever life takes you next. And as for The Tower, here’s to the next 44 years!
Sue Suter
(I’m sorry to say that since I wrote this article Mike has been taken ill and so the July issue of The Tower magazine will be delayed. Apologiesto all its readers.)
THANK YOU MIKE

EARLS BARTON BAPTIST CHURCH invites you to their
GGaarrddeenn PPaarrttyy on Saturday 13 July, from 2:30
Come along and enjoy a chat and a cream tea. Browse through the 50p stall and pick up a bargain!
Words from Jonathan ThompsonOver the Spring Bank Holiday our Boy’s Brigade Company shared anindoor camp at the lovely Norfolk costal resort of Sheringham.
Leaving Earls Barton on the Friday evening, 17 people of mixed agestravelled to the resort, arriving at around 8pm.
We quickly unpacked, and then settled down to enjoy soup and rollsbefore a time of chilling out. All the youngsters were weary and wereglad to get to sleep.
The sun shone for us on the Saturday morning, and after a full Englishbreakfast, morning prayers and camp Bank, we took time to find outa little more about Sheringham.
After lunch we all took the train into Cromer, taking in the views of thesea as we travelled. A visit to the lifeboat station and museum, werefollowed by time on the beach, with games and an opportunity forsome hardy lads to venture into the sea, which seemed very cold.
On returning to Sheringham the ladies had prepared a superb eveningmeal for us, and we all ate to our heart’s content. An evening walk, just to blow the cobwebs away, was about all the boys could manage, and after much conversation it was time for bed. Sunday began witha breakfast, which was heartily devoured.
Seaside Special, centered around the Rev. Nigel Bibbings, who led usinto thinking about Jesus and his disciples and we were all involved insharing in worship, with rainbows, boats, lighthouses and fish all beingused to help us in our devotions. It was good to share together as weconsidered the wonderful works of God.
A trip to the station followed, giving boys and adults a chance to letoff steam (please pardon the pun).
After lunch we journeyed to our favourite park in Cromer, where weenjoyed cricket and relaxation. The warm sun kept us all happy and aslow walk down the hill into the town, brought us to tea-rooms, whereeveryone enjoyed ice-creams, 3 lads bought boats and enjoyed sailingthem on the small boating pond.
We returned to our home, where Sunday roast smelt a treat. Nothingwas left after we had all eaten well. An evening of games and funended our day, which had been a super time.
Monday was a gloriously sunny day and after loading the cars, wewent to the Beeston Hill putting green for our competition. Smallprizes were given to 4 competitors who had scored a hole in one.
Our traditional fish and chip lunch was followed by time on the beach. At 4.30pm we made our way home after enjoying a fantastic weekend.
Thank you to everyone who helped again to make this weekend veryspecial.
God Bless and be with you all, Jonathan.

The Earls Barton and District Historical Society Frank Batten writes…One of the stalwarts of the Earls Barton Historical Societygave a light hearted talk to the society at its May meeting. Hilary Bailey’s talkwas intriguingly called “A Visit to the Houses of Parliament”. This proved to bea talk about toilets – their history and their part in local anecdotes. We werereminded of the weekly task of tearing up newspapers and threading the sheetson to string to hang in the toilet – and not to provide reading material. One ofHilary’s stories recounted how a relevant newcomer to the village dutifullydelivered flyers to all of the houses in the Dowthorpe area of the village, including the row of small houses that had a single door and no windows…
Our programme of evening talks has now finished for the summer although wewill be making a visit to Desborough and Rothwell in July. The new season willcommence in September with a talk about the county’s parish churches. Latertopics range from the Battle of Britain, through the lives and music of Flandersand Swann, to Boudicca’s revolt against the Romans.
The Historical Society is actively trying to increase its membership and broadenits appeal. Non – members are welcome at any of our meetings. Suggestionsfor speakers are always welcome, if there is a subject that you would like tohear being discussed by an expert please let us know and we will try to find asuitable speaker.
Our meetings are held at the St John Ambulance building on Manor Road andstart at 7:30 pm. Visitors are more than welcome at all of our meetings. Forfurther details of the Society or our future programme please contact FrankBatten on 01604 810618 or [email protected].
