AWARD WINNING MAGAZINE ...

Page 2: B2day JAN 2014
Page 3: B2day JAN 2014

There was a ripple of excitement amongst the Barton Today team members inDecember, when we found out that we had won an award in the National ParishMagazines competition. We had been chosen as third best magazine overall froman entry of over 700 magazines. Even better, we had been awarded first place forthe magazine’s content. So well done to the six team members and also to allthose of you who support the magazine in your many different ways.

This month’s front cover reminds us of the twelve copies of Barton Today whichhave found their way to your doorstep over the past year. We hope you haveenjoyed reading them. It is good to hear so many people telling us how much theylook forward to receiving their copy. Our aim in 2014 is to make Barton Todayeven better and we would appreciate any thoughts you have about how we can dothat. If anyone would like to help in any way, please get in touch. We are alwayslooking for people who would like to write the occasional article.

As 2014 descends upon us what is there to look forward to? For those sportingfans among you there is plenty to savour; the winter Olympics being held inSochi, Russia, the FIFA World Cup in Brazil and the Glasgow CommonwealthGames. On January 1st Latvia adopts the euro currency and becomes the 18thEurozone country. On September 18th the referendum for Scottish independencetakes place. At a local level, decisions will be made about planning applicationsfor further growth in the village – let’s work for an outcome that meets our needs.

When the clock struck twelve did you make any resolutions? Do you know whatthe top five resolutions were in 2013? They were; lose weight, get fit, eat morehealthily, save money/spend less and get a new job. Whatever you decided, wewish you every success with it and leave you with some wise words from two fontsof knowledge.

“Tomorrow is the first blank page of a 365 page book.Write a good one. “(Brad Paisley, songwriter)

“You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough.”(Mae West, actress)

Have a great 2014.

Barton Today Wins National AwardIn July last year we entered Barton Today into the National Parish MagazineAwards competition, hoping that we might get some recognition for what wethink is a great magazine. There were 710 entries from across the country. Theawards are divided up into five categories: Best DesignFocuses on any artwork within the magazine, page layout and use of graphics.Best ContentThe variety of articles, use of photos and general information included.Best EditorOrder of content, variety, accuracy and interest value.Best PrintQuality of printing and finishing of the magazine.Best Overall Magazine A general overview of all the above categories.

We were very pleased therefore to be told that not only had we come 3rd in theBest Overall category but we had also won the Best Content category. This is atremendous achievement and thanks must go particularly to the six members ofthe team who give up their time and work so hard to make sure that, come rainor shine, the magazine arrives at your home each month.

As we look back over the past year, I am so pleased toreport that the sale of Debbie's recipe book reached anamazing £6,700. We held a special cheque handover to theChairman of VUK at the house of one of our sponsors and Iwas so pleased that we were one of the highest donationsof 2013!When I think of Debbie I am often drawn to thoughts of herin the kitchen making cakes for a party or deserts for afamily occasion and it is so fitting that the bookcelebrated this passion. We eventually sold all of the1,000 copies we printed and could have sold more I amsure. Help with the sales comes from such diverse sources. My thanks go to Jeyes, Pink Rose Beauty, Specsavers andmessrs Higgins of Wellingborough all of whom went thatextra mile in selling the books not only to members ofstaff but also to customers and friends. The New Year brings new challenges but with the help ofthe Earls Barton community and my amazing 'Earls BartonLadies' we have shown what can be done. I am so proud tohave been part of the fundraising group and I know thatDebbie would have been amazed and so genuinelypleased at what we have achieved.Thank you all

Words from Jonathon ThompsonThe world said farewell to the great South African leader,Nelson Mandela, in December. This man helped to changehistory as he led his nation to overcome the evils of apartheid. His firm belief was that people of all faiths, colours andcreeds should be held with dignity and respect.

He was imprisoned for 27 years of his life, but despite thishe showed no bitterness towards those who held himcaptive. On the contrary, his humility and forgiveness wereseen quite clearly towards those who had mistreated him.

The beautiful rainbow nation that he loved so much wasbrought together by Mandela’s firm desire and intent to seea nation where people of all colours would live together inpeace and brotherhood. He promised a free and fair countryafter he was inaugurated as the country’s first black presidenton May 10th, 1994.

The inauguration ceremony at the Union BuildingsAmphitheatre in Pretoria, was attended by politicians anddignitaries from more than 140 countries around the world.President Mandela spoke of the human disaster of apartheid, but he also had the foresight to pay tribute to outgoingpresident de Klerk “He has made for himself a niche inhistory” he told the crowds. “He has turned out to be one ofthe greatest reformers, one of the greatest sons of SouthAfrica.”

Mandela then made this promise, “We enter into a covenantthat we shall build a society in which all South Africans, bothblack and white, will be able to walk tall, without fear in theirhearts, assured of their right to human dignity - a rainbownation at peace with itself and the world.”

President Mandela was already a hero to millions, but it wasfor his humility and forgiveness in victory that touched evenhis enemies. From the moment he was elected he made itclear that there should be no revenge against the whiteminority for the years of oppression. “ Never, never and neveragain shall it be that this beautiful land will again experiencethe oppression of one by another”, he said.

Then he spoke in AFRIKAANS, “ WAT IS VERBY”, he said,“WHAT IS PAST IS PAST”.

In that moment, the Rainbow Nation was born.

Arguably his greatest words of power and inspiration werethese: - “During my lifetime I have dedicated myself to thisstruggle of the African people. I have fought against whitedomination and I have fought against black domination. I havecherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in whichall persons live together in harmony and with equalopportunities. It is an ideal, which I hope to live for. But ifneeds be, it is and ideal for which I am prepared to die.”

These words were part of Mandela’s statement at his trial inPretoria April 1964.

Words mean little without actions and if ever words werelived out in action, it was surely through Nelson Mandela’slife, work and witness. May he rest in peace and rise in glory.

Finally, at the start of this New Year, may you know peaceand joy in your heart, and discover those riches which moneycannot buy.

God bless and be with you always,

Jonathon Thompson.

We are now at the stage where Redrow has submitted asecond application on the site off Station Road(WP/2013/0600) and Bowbridge has submitted a revised, ifvery poor, traffic assessment to (WP/2013/0398). Both willrequire additional objections to be made. There are somechanges both to designs and to the details submitted insupport but essentially the outcomes will be the same inboth cases – development that we don’t want in a placewhere the community does not want it, delivered in amanner that rides roughshod over the wishes of the peopleof Earls Barton.

It is of paramount importance therefore that objections aremade to both developments from each developer basedupon planning grounds.

The current expectation for determination of theseapplications is that the Planning Committee will hear themon 22nd Jan 2014. There is likely to be a limit on thenumbers of objectors that will be allowed to speak by thechairman. It is important therefore that we try to puttogether a team of speakers that will between them coverthe whole range of points as well as making sure that thestrength of feeling of residents is clear. This needs to bedone in a non-confrontational way, however, to have themost effect.

I shall be working with the Parish Council to help co-ordinate this and we hope to be calling another publicmeeting in January to set out the agreed approach and tosee who would like to speak and on what topics. We arealso taking advice from the Irchester group on theirapproach.

Please make sure your letters are in and please look out fornotifications of a meeting in January. It may be at fairly shortnotice. The Council have indicated that objections will beaccepted right up to the day of the meeting. We will post iton Facebook and twitter as well as around the village onposters. For further info please contact me [email protected]

Lets hope for a successful 2014.

History Society NewsIn November the Earls Barton and District Historical Societywelcomed back Amanda Pickard as its guest speaker. In herprevious visit she had talked about the Second World War kitchen;this time the talk was called Subterranean Secrets. Drawing on hertime as an official guide in London's Cabinet War Rooms we heardabout the thinking behind the underground complex that evolvedbelow Whitehall. The illustrated talk included photographs of areasbeyond the normal public access included a lower level and achamber with tunnel mouths that have long since been closed off, possibly linking to Buckingham Palace.

Interesting snippets were revealed... Churchill didn't likeunnecessary repetitive noise, so the sentry point outside his roomswas fitted with a wooden floor to deaden the sound of bootsstamping to attention.

The talk also covered other underground facilities particularly tubestations being used as air raid shelters, with children in hammocksslung between the rails.

There will not be a meeting in January but we will be holding ourannual lunch in Jeyes at the end of the month. Our programme willrecommence on Friday 21 February when David Hudson will tellthe story of his grandfather's walk to Derbyshire in search of work. The meeting will be at the St John Ambulance building at the endof Elizabeth Way, starting at 7:30.

Barton Today January 2014

I hope that everyone in the village has had a fantastic Christmasand a great start to 2014. It’s close to a year since I was elected torepresent you all on the Borough Council and it certainly has beena pleasure to do so.

There is a lot to beoptimistic in thecoming year for thevillage. At theGrange, we are finallygetting movementafter years of workwith an expansion tothe sports facilities. To ensure themaximum benefitsfor everyone we arehoping to have aCommunity Hall on site as well. Funding for all of this is comingfrom many different sources including the Parish Council, BoroughCouncil and a contribution from the proposed housingdevelopment to the North.

We also have investment coming forward for our Schools. Inconsultation with the Education Department at the County Counciland the Infant and Junior Schools, there are developing expansionproposals for the Schools to ensure that with sustainable housinggrowth, there will always be school places available to every childwithin the village. The input from the schools was vital in thisregard to ensure that the quality of education is not impacted byexpansion.

We now have an early draft for the Neighbourhood Plan. Althoughthere is still some way to go, we now have something to show forthe last two years work. I would like to thank everyone who hasbeen involved in the consultations and to James Wilson, whosehard work formulating the plan has been of enormous help to usall.

There are challenges ahead however, all the planning applicationscurrently going through the village are being looked at by theBorough’s Planning committee on the 22nd January. I will bespeaking at this meeting arguing for limited development in linewith the Neighbourhood Plan against the Southern applications andin favour of the Northern Grange site. Anyone who wishes tospeak on the night, needs to get in touch with the BoroughCouncil.

If anyone would like to get in touch with me about any of thesubjects I have mentioned or anything else, please email me [email protected] or send me a letter to 7 TownleyWay, Earls Barton, NN6 0HR.

Another Successful Ball The 4th Annual NCTLC Trust Ball was another great success for the charity.

The glitzy occasion brought all volunteers, supporters and friends of the charitytogether again for an amazing night of great entertainment and reflection.

Each year the ball provides a great opportunity for all those involved with the charityto stop and think about why everyone helps out and does their bit for this wonderfulcause and gratitude is also shown to individuals and organisations that help thecharity.

Every year the charity makes pleas for extra help and assistance as the requests to thecharity for support and guidance is asked for more and more from families beingaffected by childhood cancer.

The ball also provides the setting for thanking people who have supported the charity foranother year and to help those in the packed function room at the Marriott Hotel, Northampton,to understand why their continuing support is so important.

It was a night of celebrating all the achievements in raising much neededfunds as well as looking back on all the events and support that has beenprovided to families which makes such a difference.

On the night awards were given to Barton Today and Delapre Golf for alltheir support.

The most prestigious award of the Owen Joseph Memorial Trophy went tothe Bold Dragon Cricket Club for raising almost £5k towards the ChristmasButlin’s Trip.

Chief Executive Officer for the Charity, Janet Walker-Smith said: “What afantastic evening had by all! Thank you to everyone who came andsupported us again.”

A very touching moment from the night was a young girl, Shannon, who iscurrently undergoing her own fight with cancer, who had her CD track ofpoetry played out to guests and as a surprise for her mum on the night.

There was also an auction and people bid generously forsports memorabilia, meals, spa treatments and golfdays, as well as buying raffle tickets.

To end with guests were entertained into the night byGroove Connection, an incredible live band with a greatvariety of music performed to suit all tastes and they gotthe dance floor bopping! This was followed by tracksbeing played into the early hours by DJS fromNorthampton’s Inspiration FM.

Janet added: “It was great to see so many happy, smiling people. The band was great. An excellent jobdone by the events team.”

Quiz Night Success A great quiz night was held in Northampton in aidof the NCTLC Trust, and the charity would like to thankeveryone who took part in the event.

Howes Pervical hosted the charity quiz night at thePicturedrome on Wednesday, December 4th and a lot of funwas had at the event all in the name of raising money fora good cause.

Victoria Mifsud, Events manager for the NC TLC Trust, said:“Wow, that is what you call a quiz night, fantastically organisedevent by a group of enthusiastic and amazing people.”

“As well as the quiz and a brilliant raffle, Howes Pervical alsosurprised us with a box of toys donated by the Disney Storewhich will be put to go use for our Butlin’s trip.”

She added: “It was a great evening with a lovely bunch ofpeople.”

Barton Today January 2014

Christopher Heaton-Harris Reports...Well, a lot has happened these past few weeks and I wanted toupdate you on a couple of important issues that Earls Bartonresidents have contacted me about recently:

RURAL FAIR SHARE CAMPAIGNI appreciate local concerns that thegap in per capita settlement fundingreceived by rural areas compared tourban areas hasn’t changed in theproposed 2014-15 and 2015-16settlements. I recently received apetition signed by many local peopleon this very issue, which I presentedlast week. I have also discussed thiswith the Rt. Hon Owen PatersonMP, the Secretary of State forEnvironment, Food & Rural Affairs(pictured).

Brandon Lewis MP, the Communities and Local GovernmentMinister, has said that he is open to further discussions with rurallocal authorities to see if there is more that can be done to easeany funding disadvantage, by looking again at the distribution of thewhole funding package in future years.

The Department for Communities and Local Government is inconsultation on 2014-15 and 2015-16, so all representations onthese two years will be considered as consultation responses.

BULGARIAN & ROMANIAN IMMIGRATION A lot has been said and written in the last few weeks relating toconcerns about the influx of Bulgarian and Romanian immigrantsto the UK as of January 1st.

Unfortunately, Labour failed to implement transitional controls in2004 and Britain was the only major EU economy to be open toeconomic migration from Poland and the other accession states. As a result, 1.1 million people from these countries registered towork in the UK between 2004 and 2010. In contrast, thisGovernment has kept its promise to place maximum controls onnew countries joining the EU. When Croatia joined the EU this year, the Government imposed controls on its workers for the longestperiod possible, until 2018.

Some progress has already been made on the Government’sgeneral commitment to reduce annual net immigration from thehundreds of thousands to the tens of thousands. Net immigrationhas been cut by more than a third since 2010; the first significantfall in net immigration since the 1990s.

The Immigration Bill, currently going through the Commons, willstrengthen our enforcement powers, tighten immigration law andclamp down on individuals from overseas who abuse our publicservices. I have signed an amendment, put down as part of the Bill,to deal with the particular issue of Bulgarian and Romanianimmigration, by extending transitional controls.

PLANNING I have, yet again, submitted an objection to the newplanning proposal from Redrow Homes.

I wish you and yours a very happy and prosperous 2014.

With best wishes, Chris Heaton-Harris MP.The House of Commons, Westminster, London. SW1A 0AA.e-mail:[email protected]: @chhcalling Tel: 0207 219 7048

The weekend of 7th & 8th December arrived far sooner than seemspossible when the idea of organising a Festival was first discussedin early spring as an alternative to the previously successful ChristmasTree Festival. The frequently asked question was what does an angellook like? The reply excusing the pun was “heaven knows!” Anywayfertile imaginations in Earls Barton certainly worked overtime and weended up with some truly incredible exhibits.

Always the worry was would anyone turn up to take a look? You betthey did and over the two days we had over 600 visitors and at timesthe aisles were packed and the buzz of conversation made the effortvery worthwhile. Overall we raised the magnificent total of £1,662for church funds. For all visitors who spent time trying to findRoadside Angels the clue was in the name!

Thanks as always to a dedicated band of helpers and by name I wouldlike to thank our exhibitors:

Dear Eric,

Every New Year’s Eve we all come up with some far-fetchedresolutions that we nearly always fail to keep. Last year, Idecided to give up smoking but by the end of the week, there I was indulging once again. My wife said she wasgoing to lose two stone and complete the Londonmarathon – in fact she put on two stone and occasionallywalks to Londis. What advice do you have?

John

Dear John,

A few years ago, on New Year’s Eve, my Hilda decided towithdraw any personal services and she has continued to stickto that resolution ever since. In 1999, I vowed never to makeany New Year resolutions as they are impossible to keep. I havenever made a resolution since! Think about it.

Good luck,

Eric

If you have any concerns or issues that you want answering, why not write to Barton Today’s veryown agony uncle. He works under the pseudonym Eric, to maintain his professional anonymity. Ericis steeped in wisdom and worldly knowledge and is very keen to provide advice and guidance to thepeople of Earls Barton to help them make those difficult decisions. Whatever your problem, don’t thinktwice about contacting Eric on [email protected]. He looks forward to hearing from you.

Dear Eric,

I have a couple of Christmas presents that I don’t really wantand I’m not sure what to do with them.

My mother in law bought me a pair of Kevin Klein boxershorts. She says they were very expensive even though shewas able to knock the price down a bit at the market stall inBenidorm. One of my work colleagues bought me a DanielO’Donnell greatest hits CD in the Secret Santa. Any adviceplease?

Thank you,

Darryl

Dear Darryl,

Just tell your mother in law that the Kevin Klein boxer shortsare just right. Unless you have an unusual relationship with her,she will never know that you don’t wear them. As for the DanielO’Donnell CD, just put it back into next year’s Secret Santa. Noone can ever remember what they sent 12 months ago. I havebeen recycling my Secret Santa presents for the past ten years.

Regards,

Eric

Dear Eric...Dear Eric...

Dear Eric,

I have just received my electricity bill. I know that energyprices seem to be rising all the time but my averagemonthly bill has risen from £60 to £890. We have had a setof Christmas tree lights for the last month and a smallglowing reindeer out the front, but it should not cost thatmuch.

Yours,

Henry

Dear Henry,

I notice that your address is West Street. I did see a rathersplendid house there which has thousands of light upon it. Doyou happen to live next door? If so, it might be worth checkingwhether your neighbour has inadvertently tapped in to yourelectricity supply.

Yours sincerely,

Eric

Dear Eric,

We put our Christmas tree up on 12th December and it hasbeen up ever since. When should I take it down? Myhusband and I are in disagreement about this. Can you help?

Thank you,

Diane

Dear Diane,

Most people believe that it should stay up until the twelfth night, making it the 5th January. I like to keep mine up as long aspossible but my Hilda prefers for it come down sooner. In factshe has already started taking the tinsel off and it is only the 2ndJanuary. See if you can persuade your husband to keep it up abit longer.

Regards,

Eric

The Feel Good FactoryHappy New Year – Happy New You?

It’s January – many of you will be feeling a little lethargic after

indulging yourself over the Christmas period, but many Earls

Barton residents are celebrating their losses, after shedding

an astounding 230 stone between them during 2013 at my

Weightwatchers meetings.

I am so very proud of all my Members! They are proof that

you can lose weight and keep it off and still enjoy life,

including tempting times like summer holidays, birthdays and

celebrations. At a time when scarcely a week goes by without

the national press running another ‘obesity epidemic’ story,

it’s great to see local people winning their weight loss

challenge.

As you can see from the photographs

taken at the start of December we have

some really successful members in the

Earls Barton meetings. (Many are still

camera shy and did not join in the photo.)

I asked all of the members present that

week to write down how they felt about

their weight loss and here are a few of their

responses;

“I have to keep making extra holes in my belt, soon I will have to buy a smaller one” –17.5lbs lighter in 3 weeks

“I feel so much more positive about what Ican achieve” – 7lbs lighter in 3 weeks

“My clothes are looser and I can now getback into my motorbike trousers – Yay!” –16lbs lighter in 9 weeks

“I cannot describe how different I feel, I haveso much more energy and confidence” –71.5lbs lighter in 10months

“I feel confident, happy and carefree” – 74.5lbs in 12 monthsand maintaining a healthy weight.

Many members report feeling more confident, having more

energy, being more flexible, looser clothes, happier in

themselves, an increase in self esteem and generally feeling

better about everything.

There is of course another, very important side to losing

weight – your Health. WeightWatchers has been working with

Primary Care Trusts around the UK for over 4 years helping

to educate people about healthier lifestyles. It isn’t just about

the food you eat, it is also about how you prepare and cook

it, as well as the portions you eat. We also encourage

everyone to be a bit more active, constantly building on their

success. It is not a faddy diet that works for a short time, it

is a change of lifestyle that you can keep up to help you lose

weight in the first place and then to keep it off for life.

I have had many members join my meetings looking to

improve their health and it is quite humbling

the difference they tell me it makes to them.

When they tell me they have had their

medication for diabetes or blood pressure

decreased it is a cause for celebration,

some members have even reported being

taken off such medication completely.

Even better news is that in January 2014 we

have introduced a new aspect to our

extremely successful ProPoints plan making

it even easier to get yourself started on the

road to success. So if you are thinking

about trying to improve your health by

shedding those extra pounds gained over

Christmas why not come along to either of

the meetings at St John Ambulance:

Tuesday 7pm or Wednesday 9.30am, and

see for yourself how the ProPoints Plan

could work for you. You’ve nothing to lose

but your unwanted pounds, and you could soon be

celebrating your successful weight loss, just like our other

members are. More from me next month, Susan Price – Your

local Triple Diamond WeightWatchers Leader.

The annual Mens’ Bowls Club dinner was held in the Clubhouse onFriday 22nd November and a total of 66 attended, including the guestspeaker, Graham Carr. Richard Paintin Presided and the Master ofCeremonies was David Rust. It was an excellent night with really goodfood prepared by Sadie Wilson and her Mum.

The bar was kept busy and the stories abounded – I never knew we hadso many “great” bowlers!! The dinner over, Graham Carr entertainedthe diners with many tales of his travels around the world of football. He then asked if there were any questions and some interesting andentertaining questions were put to Graham who answered with tact anddiplomacy. There was one question in particular that Graham found hardto answer. It wasn’t that he did not know the answer – it was simplythat he (and the ensemble diners) could not understand the succinct andarticulate “Scottish” accent of our new Vice- President, Alex Ellis!! Noproblem – next year we will get an interpreter!!

The presentation of the Club’s Competition Trophies was next and NeilGould as Competition Secretary presented them – apart from the ClubChampionship Trophy and the Club Handicap Trophy which he won!!Richard Paintin the club’s president did the honours as well aspresenting David Rust with The Clubman of the Year Trophy. The full listof winners is:

CHAMPIONSHIP WINNER NEIL GOULDRUNNER UP BRIAN TIPLER

HANDICAP WINNER NEIL GOULDRUNNER UP DAVE WIGLEY

SKEEL HARRISON WINNER DAMIAN WRIGHTRUNNER UP NEIL GOULD

DRAWN PAIRS WINNERS BRIAN BAILEY AND DAVE LOCKETTRUNNERS UP DAMIEN WRIGHT AND ALEX ELLIS

2 WOODS WINNER DEAN GOULDRUNNER UP DAMIEN WRIGHT

Those of the more observant will notice that the “Goulds” won a totalof 5 trophies between them – a fantastic family effort. Special mentionmust also be made of Zac Wilson, our youngest member (aged 11) whowas the runner-up in the Novices competition – well done Zac!!

210/13 Sports & Leisure DevelopmentBob Entwistle attended to bring the members up to date onthe ongoing project. It was noted that EB Bowls & TennisClub have expressed an interest in being involved with theproject. Aiming high, together we can fly!Christmas in school was full of wonder. The children were awe-struck as they wandered around All Saints Church during thevillage Angel Festival. Our entry looked super and we were veryproud to see it on display. This was quickly followed by ouryoungest children enthralling their parents with theirperformance of ‘Away in a Manger’. Our key stage one childrenmeanwhile were brilliantly entertaining when they sang anddanced their way through their adaptation of ‘An Out Of ThisWorld Christmas’ – what else would you expect at the end of awhole term’s learning based on aliens and outer space!

The excitement continued to build with the whole school visitingthe pantomime to see 101 Dalmatians at the Castle Theatre in Wellingborough. Thevery next day our caterers provided Christmas lunch in school which was enjoyedby everyone. A group of our children visited Grangefield residential home to spreadChristmas cheer by singing carols. This was a prelude to our whole school carolservice held at the Methodist Church on our last day of term. A big thank you goesto Nigel Bibbings for helping us to remember why Christians celebrate Christmas.Of course we also had a fantastic party day where we were entertained by Steve, amagician from the Inflatable Theatre Company; wore party hats at lunch and playedhilarious party games in class. The girls and boys were allso brilliant that Santa paid school a visit in the afternoonand left some wonderful gifts for each class.

What will 2014 hold for us all at school I wonder? Frost, snow and ice will bring its own challenges andexcitement no doubt. Through it all we know that qualitylearning for all our children will continue no matter what.Teachers have been extremely busy planning an excitingcurriculum to take us through spring. Our foundationstage will be focussing on ‘Toys’ and key stage onechildren will be hooked into learning through theoverarching theme of ‘Fire and Ice’, both very apt in thepost-Christmas period. There will be a few WOWsplanned in to keep the curriculum alive too including a visitfrom our Off the Page friends once we get to ‘The GreatFire of London’. Children will also be getting into the beat when they take part inAfrican drumming. In amongst all this we’ll welcome back our ‘Blokes with Books atBarton’ – a chance for Dads and Grandads to come into school and read to thechildren.

Thinking of the future, do you have a stash of 2p coins in the house? We would bevery grateful for donations in time for our traditional ‘2p trail’ fundraiser in March!

A Happy New Year to you from all here at the Infant School!

Christmas RaffleWe wish to thank everybody who both bought and soldraffle tickets for this much needed fund raiser. Antony ourchairman was the highest individual seller, selling 540 booksof raffle tickets but whether you sold 1 book or 100 andwhether you bought 1 ticket or 100 every contribution isgreatly appreciated.

Dads Christmas CupThe Northamptonshire football association are running atournament in Mid-December and our team include ChrisBoughton, Shad Hester, Keith Lawrence, Simon Gorton, SteveBiggs, Cliff Elliott, Scott Bromwich, Phil Cole, Kirk Thompsonand Daren Bryan. So good luck to them.

Old Un’s GameOn New Years Eve there will be an old un’s game up theGrange ko 10-30. All welcome and anybody wishing to playcontact Mick McGuckin on 07876 778872

David Wilson Homes planning permissionThis along with other developments go before planning on22nd January and that will be the opportunity for EarlsBarton to voice its opinion. Anne and Antony have attended manymeetings ensuring that if the David Wison’s proposals go throughthen sport in the village will receive the best possible deal. Atpresent we have been offered 6ha of freehold land and a lumpsum of £500,000 towards changing rooms and training areas.David Wilson will also level the ground and form the playingsurfaces. This contribution is not only for football and cricket butalso has the aim to try and incorporate other village sports. EarlsBarton Football Club are still pushing to increase the land byanother acre and believe the financial contribution from DavidWilson’s needs to be increased to cover changing room andparking costs. We have pushed the Parish Council’s negotiatingteam to apply pressure the house builder to gain an uplift.

Pioneer Ground negotiationsAntony and the Parish Council are in negotiations with Hansons tosecure a new 5 year lease for the football pitches. As the present licence is running out, and the Football Club wish theParish Council to secure a new licence with an increased break clause from 6 months to 1 year due to FA regulations,Hansons have proposed a new 5 year lease with the 1 year break clause however at present the new terms areunacceptable and we are trying to resolve the differences. The football club’s contribution to securing the new lease is£625.

Charter Standard Community StatusOur application to retain the highest possible FA status within grassroots football has been submitted and we await theresult. For the club to remain a Charter Standard Community Club is vital and there are financial, assistance andprestige benefits to keeping this level of status. A lot of hard work goes into this yearly health check and the clubmaintaining the correct level of coaching and administrative support.

New Under 7’sFor the first time the Under7’s will enter the Weetabix Youth football organised friendly matches. A grant of £250 hasbeen received from the Northamptonshire Football Association to provide balls and kit. Normally we do not enter thisform of football until under 8’s but we are trialling it for the second half of the season. Good luck and best wishes andremember they are 6-7 years old it is fun and technical development foremost as it is with most youth and mini soccerfootball.

Line marking for 10 years. An award was handed out to Dougie who marks out the pitches at the Pioneer for us on completing 10 years ofpainting straight lines.

This just leaves us to say a BIG THANK YOU, to everybody associated with the club and we hope you have a fantasticChristmas and a successful new year.

EARLS BARTON’S AMATEUR DRAMATIC SOCIETY

UNDER THE TOWER DRAMA Earls Barton’s drama group for over 40 years and a NODA award winning society

UTTD is very pleased to announce its new production:

*Starring now in the Church Hall*

“NEW CURTAINS”UTTD is so pleased to say that at last, after quite a while of saving up for them, the group has been able topurchase new curtains for the stage in the church hall and also matching curtains at the windows. The

curtains are a beautiful, warm raspberry colour and there are also black curtains to pull across part way backon the stage and more black curtains for the sides.

For over 40 years UTTD has used the hall (and also the Church in days gone by) for their productionsand by buying the curtains this is a way for UTTD to say thank you to the people of Earls Barton for their

continued support of our little group.

Our last play, in November, was three one act comedies and everyone seemed to enjoy them and theycertainly produced lots of laughter. We were very pleased to welcome a number of new participants both

taking part in the plays and helping in one way or another and we are now looking forward to our next show inMarch. It is intended that we put on two one act plays with a fish and chip supper but it is early days and

things may change, so watch this space.

THE AUDITION IS ON SUNDAY JANUARY 5th 2014 in the Church Hall at 7.30pm.

For more information about our group and the forthcoming show, call either 01604 810802 or 10604 810665or e-mail: [email protected]

If you use the hall do remember that the curtains are the property of Under The Tower Drama and whilst UTTDis very happy for other groups and organisations to benefit from them, we do ask that you treat them with

care, please. Hopefully they will enhance the hall for many years to come. Linda.

Happy New Year! Hope you all had a brilliant Christmas and New Year! It’s a funny time of year in the theatre worldwith many theatre still running with a Christmas show you still have a final chance to see SleepingBeauty and the Wind in the Willows at Northampton. This month we are taking a closer look atwhat The Castle has on offer for us to enjoy! .

Pupdate...Tasmin spent a few hours at the NEC for the Good Food Show, helping to promote Guide Dogs. She was the youngest pupthere, and although to us she looks quite a big girlie now, nextto the working dogs she looked really small. She basked in allthe fuss and attention she received, and stayed very calm witheveryone. She picked up some cookery tips from Phil Vickery,

and met the Hairy Bikersand Aled Jones.

We were based next tothe Hardy's stand too, soI had fun sampling thewine which was kindlybeing brought to me.

As I was getting thirstywith all the talking about Guide dogs and puppy walking while helping people into theirblindfolds before they went into the sensory tunnel. We took Tasmin to the village school inMears Ashby, where children were doing a blindfolded walk. They were taking it in turns tobe blindfolded, while another child guided them around the field. They managed very well,Gary had a turn at being blindfolded, with one of the children guiding him. He said he hadn'tgot a clue where he was going, but the little girl kept him safe. She has also started wearingher coat (as you can see in the photo of her visiting the Festival of Angels), doesn't she lookgrown up!

Tasmin also went to a Lace Fair at Solihull with us. She did a grand job of keeping Gary busywhile I spent money....... isn't she good. May we wish you all a Happy New Year, and we lookforward to sharing news of our Guide Dog pups if you are still wanting to hear about them.

Earls BartonBonfire Night

Friday 1st November 2pm - a load of combustibles arrive from Homepack. We immediately started to build the bonfire. This year we had three extra willing helpers and by dusk the fire was half built.

Saturday 2nd November 8am with our helpers the fire was completed at 11am when we all settled down to eat baconrolls cooked on an open fire.

We then started to prepare the launch sites. Later on the lads from Whites Nursery brought us a large load of woodand with their machine put it straight onto the top of the fire saving us a lot of time (thanks lads). Safety netting waserected and the field was ready for the evening’s entertainment.

Stan Bond provided hot food and drink, plus rides for the children; he also lit up the lane (thanks Stan).

This year we were sorry to say that the torch lit procession had to be abandoned due to high winds making itimpossible to light the torches. We only had one guy this year called 'Michael Miles' by Holly and Charlie Marlow, sothey share the £10 prize money kindly donated this year by Mick Higham (thanks Mick).

The fire was lit at approximately 7pm and when it had burnt down the firework display commenced with the firing ofan 85 mm mine, luckily by this time the wind had died down a little.

Thanks to Mick, Mathew, Katie, Geof, Hazel and Jen, my helpers on the night and also to Marg, who provided us with anice hot supper.

I hope everyone enjoyed the evening, especially those who broke through the fence and the ones who stayed in theroad to watch the event avoiding the entrance fee!

Hope to see you all again next year when the display will be on Saturday 1st November.

What is a Senior Citizen- by Roger PickfordA senior citizen is one who was here before the pill, television, frozen foods, contact lenses, credit cards andbefore man walked on the moon.

For us, “Time ShARing” meant togetherness not holidayhomes,A “ChiP” meant a piece of wood, “hARdWARe” meant nutsand bolts and “SoFTWARe” was not a word!

We got married first then lived together and thought“CleAvAge” the butcher did! A “STud” was something thatfastened a collar to a shirt and “going All The WAy” meantstaying on a double decker to the bus depot!

We thought that “FAST Food” was what you ate in lent; A“Big mACk” was an oversized raincoat and “CRumPeT” waswhat we ate for tea!

in our day “gRASS” was mown,“PoT” was something youcooked in and a “JoinT”was cooked on a sunday!

We are todays senior citizens;a hardy bunch when youthink how the world haschanged.
