Hellooooooooo Vineyarders!!! An Island in Mourning: On behalf of the MV Center for Living board and staff, we wish to extend our deepest sympathy, condolences and regrets to the family of the Vineyard’s beloved and esteemed Pat Gregory whose sudden and tragic demise has left the Island in shock and mourn- ing over the senseless and heartbreaking ending to a beautiful, giving and elegant life. Pat has gone to join with the family members and loved ones, who passed on before him, to live in the eternal light that radiated and warmed our presence as he walked among us. Vaya con Dios. Happy Birthday Sonya Karney!!!: On April 12th David Duarte and Ear attended the 3rd Annual Shellfish Extravaganza held in the Chilmark Community Cen- ter. The event is a guaranteed fun time. Partygoers get to sample prize-winning chowder and chow down on delectable freshly-shucked oysters from all around the Island, both wild and cultured. We socialized with friends and neighbors, made new friends and danced to the rock- ing blues tunes of Island son Johnny Hoy and the Bluefish. The wing-ding is hosted by the Martha’s Vineyard Shellfish Group, under the direction of marine biologist Rick Karney who has served as director of the MVSG for 37 years. Ear chatted with Rick’s mom, Sonya Karney, who was here to celebrate her 90th birthday on April 14th with her son, Rick. Sonya is very lively, personable and loves to dance. Johnny Hoy wished Mrs. Karney a happy 90th and played a song in her honor which she danced with her beloved son. David Duarte asked the birthday girl to dance and they skipped a light fandango and Sonya was enjoying herself immensely. Other couples kicking up their heels were Marilyn and Denys Wortman, Vicki & Klaus Broscheit, Susan & Jerry Stamell. Gazette “Bird News” columnist Susan B. Whiting and Flip Harrington were shaking their booties to the Bluefish beat and hav- ing a ball. Ear saw Susan and Flip dancing cheek to cheek to the tunes of Serendipity recently at the PA Club. These two love to dance as much as Ear and Big Dave—or more, if that’s possible. MV Center for Living director Leslie Clapp was at the MVSG extravaganza—her ever-lovin’ hubby, Edgartown Shellfish Constable, and President of the MVSG, Paul Bagnall, was busy overseeing the party and see- ing that things ran without a hitch. Oak Bluffs Constable David Grunden and wife Sharry Stevens-Grunden were working the admissions table taking money and is- suing food and libation tickets. TCOA Anniversary Open House will be held on Sunday, June 1st, from 2-4 pm. Listen to the music of Christine McLean and Serendipity—and bring your dancing shoes! Tisbury Senior Center director Joyce Stiles-Tucker says that re- freshments will be provided and the event is open to the public. The MV Mediation Program (aka MV Center for Dispute Resolution) will present a program at the Tisbury Senior Center on June 2nd at 1:30 p.m. Peter Meleney, Vice Chairman of the MVMP and Andrea Quigley, a Mediator and Facil- itator, will lead a discussion on how you can improve communication with adult children and caregivers. Congratulations Elysa Roberts!!!: Rosie Roberts, Special Assistant to the MV Center for Living Supportive Day Program told The Ear that her daughter, Elysha, won the 2014 Saul Bell Award (and $1,000) for her jewelry designs in “alternative metals and materials.” This is a major national competition and the award committee picked up the tab for flying the young and extremely-talented designer to Albuquerque on May 17th to attend the awards ceremony. Martha’s Vineyard Center for Living Supportive Day Program Your Military Discharge (DD-214) …the most important document you have The family of a veteran recently told me that they might not be able to get a flag for their deceased because the DD-214 could not be located. The DD-214 is the most important document that you have! To file any claim with the VA, to register for VA Health care, to apply for benefits through Chapter 115, for military burial or other benefits, the first thing you will be asked for is your military discharge (DD-214). If you enlisted from Massachusetts, the Military Records Branch, Office of the Adjutant General, Boston, MA maintains copies of DD-214 for the following periods: WWII (1940-46), Korean War (1950-1954), Vietnam War Era (1959- 1972) and from 1979 to the present. If Military Records does not have your discharge, send to the National Personnel Records Center, (Military Personnel Records) in St. Louis, MO for your discharge. Done on line you can have your discharge within 30 days. DD-214 is available to the next of kin if deceased: parents, spouse, children. If your DD-214 was destroyed in the fire of 1973, the primary record custodian can issue you a “Certificate of Military Service” that can be used for any official purpose. Also, call your local veterans agent to see if they have the discharge on file. I keep copies of all discharges in my office in case the veteran or their families ever need them. Please consider giving a copy of your discharge to Veterans Services or a family member for safekeeping.

“ALIVE INSIDE”Sunday June 29th, 4 pm

MV Film Society A screening of the documentary “Alive Inside” which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival; a story of music and memory that tells how music can bring dementia patients back to life.

plus

“MARVIN AND SARALEE”Preceding the documentary, MV Center for Living will present a 10-minute mini-documentary

telling the story (in capsule version) of island residents Marvin and Saralee Rosencrantz’s journey through the maze of encroaching dementia. Marvin’s wife, Saralee attends the

Supportive Day Program. Their story is a touching and heart-wrenching testimony to how one person has coped with a spouse’s dementia.

Leslie Clapp, Director of the MV Center for Living, and Marvin Rosenkrantz will be lead a discussion.
