A IS FOR AGRICULTURE Agriculture has always been Iowa's best quality. With its rich soil , naturally Iowa makes great crops. As of 2009 there were about 92,600 farms in Iowa. That’s about 30.8 million acres! Iowa's main crops are corn and soy beans.

B IS FOR BLACKHAWK

THE GREAT CHIEF BLACK HAWK WAS BORN in the city of saukenauk near the rock river in 1767. even as a child he was a great warrior. He went on war raids with his father when he was only 15. at age 16 he tried lead his own raids, but had limited success until he was 19. he killed 6 people in that raid. He became the war chief when his father died in a raid on the Osages. He was Sauk in the war of 1812. he successfully raided fort Madison during this time.

C IS FOR CHOLERA

Cholera was a very dangerous disease that was extremely common to Iowa’s river boat companies. Cholera victims often got diaria thus leading to rapid dehydration.

E IS FOR EASTERN GOLDFINCH

The eastern gold finch is Iowa’ s state bird. It can grow to 11-13 centimeters long with a wingspan of 19 -22 centimeters. It weighs 11-20 grams[less than .50 ounces]. As their name suggests, male goldfinches are a golden hue with a little black and white. Females are a dull brown color.

F IS FOR FARMS

Farms have always been, and probably always will be, Iowa's greatest resource. Many Iowans make a living on a farm. Farming is Iowa’s biggest job industry.

G IS FOR GEODE

The geode is Iowa’s state rock. On the outside geodes look like normal rocks, but on the on inside they have BEUTIFUL CRYSTALS. Geodes can be found all over Iowa but, most geodes are found near keokuk.

H IS FOR hawkeyes

In 1889 the university of Iowa organized a varsity football team, they called it the Hawkeyes. That very same year the Hawkeyes challenged Grinnell but they lost 24-0. it wasn’t until 1991 that Iowa won a game. Their team captain, Martin Sampson blocked a field goal and ran 70 yards for a touchdown.

I IS FOR IMMIGRANTS

In the 18th century immigrants started to move to Iowa. The first non-English settlers were the Danish. Most of the immigrants settled In eastern Iowa. only a few countries settled in western Iowa [such as the Germans, Dutch , and Scandinavian].

J IS FOR John Deere

John Deere has been, and will always be a major producer of Iowa's farm equipment. The company was founded in 1837 by a man named John Deere. It started of as a small blacksmithing business.

K IS FOR klu klux klan

The Klu Klux Klan was actually founded in the south , however it only lasted for a couple years before it disbanded. unfortunately During world war 1 kkk started to reorganize and establish themselves in Iowa. By 1924 there were 6 million members. It didn’t last long in 1930 there were fewer than 100,000 in the u.s. The Klan was completely disbanded in 1980

L IS FOR LOESS HILLS

The loess hills were made during the last ice age when great glaciers covered Iowa. As it got warmer the glaciers receded the vast melt waters deposited silt that slowly built up to what is now the loess hills.

M IS FOR Mississippi river

The Mississippi river is one of the most important recourses in Iowa. the Mississippi let steamboats travel up-river bringing new citizens, vital supplies, and goods from the east to Iowa.

P IS FOR PARIRY ROSE

The prairie rose sports 5 bright pink petals. This rose is commonly found all over Iowa and in parts of South Dakota. It became Iowa’s state flower in 1897

Q IS FOR QUAIL Quail usualy live in southern Iowa. They often nest in close proximity to one another for protection. Quail prefer to hang around the the edge of the field were there is plenty of space to take of at short notice if necessary.

R IS FOR RACOON RIVER

S IS FOR SPIRIT LAKE MASSACRE

IN JULY OF1856 THE GARDNERs moved to the west shore of Okoboji lake. They built a small cabin WERE THEY WERE TO STAY THE REST OF THE WINTER. UNFORTUNATLY ONLY 2 PEOPLE OUT OF THE MANY FAMILIES THAT SETTLED AT Okoboji would live. This year was also the year the last Sioux sold their land, however one small band of Indians still roamed the area around the lake. Their leader Inkapaduta hated whites. So you could very well imagine when he saw white people living on his former land he went on killing spree. He took 4 captives only young abbie Gardner and Mrs. Noble lived to tell the tale.

O IS FOR OAK TREE

THERE ARE MANY TYPES OF OAK TREE. THE NORTHERN RED OAK IS IOWA’S STATE TREE. IT CAN ONLY BE FOUND IN IOWA, SOUTH DAKOTA , NORTH DAKOTA ,AND CENTRAL CANADA. IT GROWS BEST IN SANDY LOAM AND ACID SOILS IN FULL SUN. IT REPRODUCECES WITH AN ACORN A NUT THAT IS 3/4-1 INCH. IT’S ONLY PEST IS THE GYPSY MOTH. THE CATERPILLERS EAT ALMOST EVERY PART OF THE TREE NOT JUST THE LEAVES.
