As we celebrate Black History month, we continue to highlight African Americans that have opened doors for generations of young people such as Harriet Tubman who helped hundreds of American slaves escape along the secret route to freedom known as the Underground Railroad in the years before the Civil War. Born a slave herself, Harriet Tubman fled from Maryland to freedom in Philadelphia in 1849. For the next 10 years she made repeated secret trips back to Maryland, leading over 300 escaped slaves north to freedom in Canada. After the Civil War began in 1861 she also served the Union as a scout, spy and nurse. Her success at shepherding others to safety earned her the nickname “the Moses of her People” and made her a lasting symbol of the American anti-slavery movement. In 2016, the U.S. Treasury announced that Harriet Tubman would replace President Andrew Jackson as the face on the $20 bill.

As we celebrate Black History month, we continue to highlight African Americans that have opened doors for generations of young people such as Nelson Mandela spent 27 years as a political prisoner in South Africa before becoming, the country’s first black president. Nelson Mandela was a leading member of the African National Congress (ANC), which opposed South Africa’s white minority government and its policy of racial separation known as apartheid. The government outlawed the ANC in 1960. Mandela was captured and jailed in 1962, and in 1964 he was convicted of treason and sentenced to life in prison. He began serving the sentence as prisoner number 46664 on Robben Island, near Cape Town. But instead of disappearing from view, Mandela became a prison-bound martyr and worldwide symbol of resistance to racism. South African President F.W. de Klerk finally lifted the ban on the ANC and released Mandela in 1990. Nelson Mandela used his stature to help dismantle apartheid and form a new multi-racial democracy, and he and de Klerk shared the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993. Nelson Mandela was elected the country’s president in 1994. He served until 1999, when he was succeeded by his deputy Thabo Mbeki. Mandela remained a celebrated figure in South Africa and throughout the world until his death in 2013. His autobiography, Long Walk to Freedom, was published in 1994.

As we celebrate Black History month, we continue to highlight African Americans that have opened doors for generations of young people such as George Washington Carver was a celebrated botanist and inventor at a time when it was still rare for African-Americans to reach those heights. The son of a Missouri slave, George Washington Carver grew up to attend Iowa State University, earning a bachelor’s degree in 1894 and a master’s in 1896. He then joined the faculty of Booker T. Washington‘s Tuskegee Institute. Carver’s attempts to find crop alternatives to cotton led him to study and work with the peanut. Eventually he created more than 325 products from the humble peanut, helping to create demand for the plant and establish it as a major American crop. Although George Washington Carver is often credited with inventing peanut butter, it seems others had created that product before Carver began his own work with peanuts. Carver also worked with sweet potatoes, soybeans and pecans, among other plants, and his work helped change the face of agriculture in the American south.

As we celebrate Black History month, we continue to highlight African Americans that have opened doors for generations of young people such as Ecologist Wangari Maathai who won the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize for her years of work with women to reverse African deforestation. Wangari Maathai went to college in the United States, earning degrees from Mount St. Scholastica College in Atchison, Kansas (1964) and the University of Pittsburgh (1966). She returned to Kenya and earned her PhD from the University of Nairobi (1971), then worked as a professor in their department of veterinary medicine. In 1976, Maathai began promoting a tree-planting program to reverse deforestation and provide firewood for Kenyan women. Soon known as the Green Belt Movement, the program led to the planting of millions of trees and made Wangari Maathai a major political figure in Kenya. In 1997 she ran unsuccessfully for president and for a seat in Parliament, but in December of 2002 she was elected to Parliament, and in 2003 she was appointed by President Mwai Kibabi to the Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources and Wildlife. Wangari Maathai won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004, with the Nobel committee citing “her contribution to sustainable development, democracy and peace.” She was the first African woman to win a Nobel.

As we celebrate Black History month, we continue to highlight African Americans that have opened doors for generations of young people such as Kofi Annan was Secretary-General of the United Nations from 1997 through 2006. Kofi Annan was a U.N. veteran who took his first job with the organization in 1962 and worked his way up through various posts, including Deputy Director to the U.N. As we celebrate Black History month, we continue to highlight African Americans that have opened doors for generations of young people such as Louis Armstrong was the most famous jazz trumpeter of the 20th century. Louis Armstrong began playing in New Orleans clubs and saloons in his early teens. By the 1920s, Armstrong was touring the country and leading his own band, the Hot Five (later the Hot Seven); he kept touring and performing for the next five decades. Louis Armstrong was particularly famous for his innovative, loose-limbed improvisations; some call him the first great jazz improvisor. His gravelly voice and sunny persona were a hit with the non-jazz public, and later in his career he was seen as a cheerful ambassador of jazz all over the world. Armstrong appeared as himself in movies like High Society and Hello, Dolly!  The theme song from the latter film became his most widely-known recording. Louis Armstrong was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as an “early influence” in 1990.

As we celebrate Black History month, we continue to highlight African Americans that have opened doors for generations of young people such as Maya Angelou’s 1969 autobiography, I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings, was nominated for a National Book Award and made her a symbol of pride for African-American women. In the 1950s Maya Angelou had been a dancer and stage actress, and she was active in the civil rights movement; she became a coordinator for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, thanks to a request from Martin Luther King, Jr. During the 1960s she spent five years in Africa, working as a journalist and a teacher. Meanwhile, she was writing. Maya Angelou returned to the United States and in 1969 published I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings. In 1972 she was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize for her collection of poetry, Just Give Me a Cool Drink of Water ‘fore I Diiie. In the following years, Angelou continued teaching, writing, acting, producing, recording (she won Grammy Awards for the spoken word for the years 1993, 1995 and 2002) and collecting honorary degrees from across the United States. In 1981 she became the Reynolds Professor of American Studies at Wake Forest University in North Carolina. At Bill Clinton’s request, Angelou wrote a poem — On the Pulse of Morning — for his 1993 inauguration as U.S. president. She was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama in 2011, three years before her death.

As we celebrate Black History month, we continue to highlight African Americans that have opened doors for generations of young people such as Jesse Owens is remembered for one stunning week in 1936, when he won four track and field gold medals at the Summer Olympics in Berlin. Jesse Owens was born in Alabama and moved to Cleveland with his family as a boy. While still in high school, he tied the world record of 9.4 seconds in the 100-yard dash. That earned him a spot at Ohio State University, where as the “Buckeye Bullet” he set more world records.  “In his junior year at Ohio State, Owens competed in 42 events and won them all, including four in the Big Ten Championships, four in the NCAA Championships, two in the AAU Championships and three at the Olympic Trials.” The Summer Games of 1936 were held in Berlin, where Nazi leader Adolf Hitler seemed determined to display the superiority of the German “Aryan” race. Owens, an African-American, put that notion to rest with victories in the 100- and 200-meter dash, the broad jump (a forerunner to today’s long jump) and the 4×100-meter relay. The performance made Jesse Owens both an Olympic hero and a lasting symbol of black pride. In 1976, President Gerald Ford awarded Owens the prestigious Medal of Freedom.

This Friday the girls and boys’ basketball teams are hosting Millard North at 5:30 and 7:15pm in the Thunderdome.  The 7:15pm boys game will feature the #1 ranked Millard North Mustangs and your #2 ranked Bellevue West Thunderbirds.  Due to the expected capacity crowd, we will presale tickets in the activities office throughout the week.  Adult tickets are $6 and student tickets are $4.  If you have an activity card you will not need to purchase a ticket but you will need to have your activity card on Friday to get into the game.  Purchasing a ticket will not guarantee you a seat in the gym but will enable you to skip the line at the door on Friday evening.  Please plan to arrive early to guarantee yourself a seat in the gym on Friday.  We want to have the best crowd of the year as Millard North is already buying tickets to attend.  You won't want to miss this great event.  Hope to see everyone there and good luck to both the girls and boys’ basketball teams.

As we celebrate Black History month, we continue to highlight African Americans that have opened doors for generations of young people such as Frederick Douglass was a former slave who became one of the great American anti-slavery leaders of the 1800s. Frederick Douglass was born into slavery in Maryland but in 1838, at age 20, he escaped to freedom in New York. A few years later he went to work for abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison, traveling and speaking on behalf of Garrison’s paper The Liberator. Frederick Douglass published his memoir Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave in 1845. Eloquent, smart and determined, Douglass gained fame as a speaker, began his own anti-slavery publications and became a ‘conductor’ on the Underground Railroad that helped lead slaves to freedom. In later years he became a personal friend of Abraham Lincoln and helped persuade Lincoln to issue the Emancipation Proclamation. He also was a strong supporter of women’s rights. For all these reasons, Frederick Douglass is often described as the founder of the American civil rights movement.

As we celebrate Black History month, we continue to highlight African Americans that have opened doors for generations of young people such Charismatic, outspoken and nicknamed “The Greatest,” heavyweight boxing champion Muhammad Ali was the dominant heavyweight fighter of the 1960s and 1970s. Later in life he became an icon of African-American pride and one of the most famous athletes in the world. A fighter of exceptional speed, cunning and flair, Muhammad Ali won the world heavyweight title on three separate occasions over a span of 15 years. He was born Cassius Clay, and under that name he won a gold medal at the 1960 Olympics in Rome. He claimed his first title by defeating Sonny Liston in 1964; his brash confidence was on display before the fight when he said of his fighting style, “Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee. The hands can’t hit what the eyes can’t see.” He had a long-running rivalry with fellow heavyweight Joe Frazier, whom he fought three times: Ali lost the first match in 1971, but won rematches in 1974 and 1975. Muhammad Ali also defeated George Foreman in the famous 1974 “Rumble in the Jungle” held in Kinshasa, Zaire. Though his skills declined markedly in later years, Ali kept boxing until 1981, when he retired with a record of 56-5 in his 61 professional fights. In later years, Muhammad Ali suffered from Parkinson’s Disease, a motor-skills illness which slowed his movement and left him mostly unable to speak in public. Still, he remained one of the world’s best-known and most popular athletes; his 1996 appearance to light the ceremonial flame at the Summer Olympics in Atlanta was an especially nostalgic occasion. Muhammad Ali was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1990. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2005 by President George W. Bush, who called Ali “a fierce fighter and a man of peace”.

As we celebrate Black History month, we continue to highlight African Americans that have opened doors for generations of young people such as Sojourner Truth began life as a slave and ended it as a celebrated anti-slavery activist. Sojourner Truth was born into slavery in New York and was sold several times before escaping to freedom with an infant daughter in 1827. She worked as a housekeeper, lived in a religious commune, and eventually became a traveling speaker and preacher. Prompted by religious feelings, she changed her name to Sojourner Truth in 1843. Although she could not read or write, Sojourner Truth was a captivating speaker: she reportedly stood nearly six feet tall and was a spirited evangelist who spoke out for women’s rights and against slavery. Her memoir The Narrative of

Sojourner Truth was published in 1850 and helped establish her more widely in the public mind. The next year, at a women’s rights convention in Akron, Ohio, she gave her famous speech, “Ain’t I A Woman,” a short but stirring challenge to the notion that men were superior to women. During the Civil War she worked to support black Union soldiers, and after the war she continued to travel and preach on spiritual topics and as an advocate for the rights of blacks and women.

As we celebrate Black History month, we continue to highlight African Americans that have opened doors for generations of young people such as Oprah Winfrey is one of the most successful talk show hosts and multimedia publishers in American TV history. Oprah Winfrey first got into broadcasting in the early 1970s; after anchoring and reporting TV news in Nashville, Tennessee and Baltimore, Maryland, she landed a job on the morning show of A.M. Chicago in 1984. The next year she made the leap to acting, making her movie debut in The Color Purple and earned an Oscar nomination for her work. In 1986 she launched The Oprah Winfrey Show, a TV talk show which featured celebrity interviews and discussions of social issues, along with tearful confessions of personal failings or traumas by guests or by Oprah herself.  “Oprah’s Book Club,” a feature of her show highlighting new books, became famous for its ability to create bestsellers. In 2000 she launched her own lifestyle magazine, O. She announced in November of 2009 that she would end her TV show when her existing contract ended, and her final shows were broadcast in May of 2011. In the meantime she had started her own cable channel, called OWN: the Oprah Winfrey Network. She debuted a new interview show on that network, Oprah’s Next Chapter, in January of 2012. In the years since she has continued to run her multimedia empire and devoted herself to philanthropy; in 2013she donated $13 million to the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African

As we celebrate Black History month, we continue to highlight African Americans that have opened doors for generations of young people such as Jackie Robinson was the first African-American to play in baseball’s major leagues in the modern era. Only white players were accepted in the major leagues until 1947, when Jackie Robinson was called up to play for the Brooklyn Dodgers. He made his first major league appearance on April 15, 1947. Robinson was named Rookie of the Year for 1947 and went on to appear in six World Series in ten seasons with the Dodgers (1947-56). Other major league teams soon followed Brooklyn’s lead and hired black players of their own. Robinson’s stellar play, and his role in breaking the color barrier, led to his 1962 induction as the first African-American in baseball’s Hall of Fame. In 1997, on the 50th anniversary of Jackie Robinson’s first year with the Dodgers, Major League Baseball permanently retired Robinson’s uniform number, 42. As we celebrate Black History month, we continue to highlight African Americans that have opened doors for generations of young people such as Attorney Thurgood Marshall led the civil rights case of Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka to a successful hearing at the Supreme Court of the United States in 1954. He became the court’s first African-American justice 13 years later. The descendant of slaves, Thurgood Marshall graduated from all-black Lincoln University in Pennsylvania in 1930, then received a law degree from Howard University in 1933. He opened his own law practice in Baltimore and became known as a lawyer who would speak up for the rights of African-Americans; this led him to a job with the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in 1936. He spent more than two decades with the NAACP, gaining his greatest fame for the case of Brown v. Board of Education from 1952-54. When the Supreme Court ruled in 1954 that “Separate educational facilities are inherently unequal,” Marshall and the NAACP had won a great victory for civil rights. Thurgood Marshall was nominated to the U.S. Court of Appeals (Second Circuit) in 1961, then appointed to the post of solicitor general in 1965 by President Lyndon Johnson. Marshall was appointed to the Supreme Court itself in 1967, where he served for 24 years before he retired in 1991.

As we celebrate Black History month, we continue to highlight African Americans that have opened doors for generations of young people such as Rosa Parks became an icon of the American civil rights movement simply by refusing to give up her seat on a city bus. In 1955, Rosa Parks was an African-American living in Montgomery, Alabama — a city with laws that strictly segregated blacks and whites. On December 1, 1955, after her day of work as a seamstress at a local department store, Rosa Parks boarded a city bus. When she refused to give up her seat to a white man, the bus driver called police, and Rosa Parks was arrested and fined. The resulting bus boycott by African-Americans, led by Reverend Martin Luther King Jr., caused a national sensation. The boycott was a success and led to desegregation in Montgomery and elsewhere in the United States, making Rosa Parks a national icon of civil rights and African-American pride. Rosa Parks was no stranger to the civil rights movement: she had been elected secretary of the Montgomery chapter of the NAACP in 1943, and was serving in that role at the time of her arrest. She later moved to Michigan and worked as an aide to Congressman John Conyers, Jr. from 1966 until her retirement in 1988, and she founded the Rosa and Raymond Parks Institute for Self Development in 1987. Rosa Parks was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Bill Clinton in 1996. After her death, she became the first woman ever to lay in honor in the Rotunda of the U.S. Capitol building. She was pictured on a U.S. postage stamp in 2013.
