APPOMATTOX COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL – 2
Summary
Appomattox County High School (ACHS) is a high-performing school located in center of Appomattox,
VA. ACHS serves approximately 711 students from diverse family backgrounds. With a dedication to
continuous improvement and educational excellence, ACHS leaders have developed a strategic school
improvement plan for the high school, with students as the center of focus.
The school improvement plan will provide a framework for decision-making that builds upon a common
mission, vision, and guiding principles. A broad spectrum of data was utilized in the development of a
school improvement plan that reflects a shared consensus among leaders. The strategic plan is the result
of sound research and represents the shared values and priorities of the school.
The curriculum consists of college preparatory and career technical programs. A 4x4 block scheduling
format provides students an opportunity to take four new classes each semester. Advantages of the block
schedule include longer class periods which allow in-depth coverage and application, better use of
instructional time, fewer students per teacher, and fewer courses for students each semester.
Contained in this report is an overview of the planning process, data sources, and a summary of the
findings. With a clear mission, vision, and guiding principles, the school improvement plan describes the
school’s priorities in the ongoing work to achieve continuous improvement.

ACHS Mission Statement
We are building a climate at ACHS in which the entire staff impacts students in a powerfully positive
way by being present, professional, and purposeful; by having respect for and building positive
relationships with our students; and by giving students reasons for engaging in high-level, collaborative,
creative academic learning along with positive character-building.
Keys to Success
In Phase 1 of the school improvement plan, data was collected through different methods and
resources. Once data was collected, analyzed, and synthesized, the results were used to identify
recurrent themes, trends, strengths and weakness. The model below is a visual representation of
the school improvement plan. It identifies the level of engagement involved in the development
of various components of the school improvement plan.
•Document the current state of reality and the desired future position of the school
•Review mission, vision, and guiding principles of the school
•Review archival data and reports provided by the school, division, and VDOE
•Perform rigorous analysis of student achievement
Phase 1:
Conduct Research
•Create a framework for broad direction and priorities for the future in a formal school improvement plan
•Documented mission, vision, and guiding principles desired by stakeholders
•Facilitated work sessions to review mission, vision, guiding principles and goals.
•Developed a school improvement plan document to serve as a broad outline to guide the future direction of the school.
Phase 2:
Develop Strategic Plan
•Develop and document specific steps that will be taken in order to accomplish the goals identified in the school improvement plan
•Facilite administrator and school improvement committee meetings
•Develop the plan which contains the following: overarching goals, rationale, data, strategies, actions, task, and person responsible
Phase 3:

School Climate Goal
ACHS mission includes “which the entire staff impacts students in a powerfully positive way by being
present, professional, and purposeful.” Students learn best when they are in environments in which
they feel safe, supported, challenged, and accepted. In addition, environments that have strong
school climates foster the social, emotional, and academic well-being of all students. Research
shows that when schools and districts effectively focus on improving school climate, students are
more likely to engage in the curriculum, achieve academically, and develop positive
relationships; students are less likely to exhibit problem behaviors; and teacher turnover is lower
and teacher satisfaction is higher. (U.S. Department of Education, Office of Safe and Healthy
Students. (2016). Quick guide on making school climate improvements. Washington, DC:
Author.)
SMART Goal 3:
In Appomattox County High School, the school will improve student achievement and school
climate by reducing the overall teacher’s absences by 10% by May 2018.
Rationale
The third goal of the school’s improvement plan is related to supporting academic achievement
by creating a school environment and culture that fosters positivity and consist appearance by
teachers and staff. Working with teachers and staff, all learners will understand and model how
important attendance is to be successful. The specific area of focus will be improving teachers
and staff attendance to improve students’ personal success and accountability.
Data
The U.S. Education Department’s Office for Civil Rights estimated this summer that 27 percent
of the nation’s teachers are out of school for more than 10 days of regular classes — some
missing far more than 10 days — based on self-reported numbers from the nation’s school
districts. But some school systems, especially those in poor, rural areas and in some major cities,
saw chronic absenteeism among teachers rise above 75 percent in 2014.“When the teacher of
record is not in the classroom, it has an impact on student achievement,” Joseph said. The
National Bureau of Economic Research has found that when teachers are absent for at least 10
days, there is a significant decrease in student outcomes. The decrease, according to one study, is
equivalent to the difference between having a new teacher and one with two or three years of
experience. (https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/education/1-in-4-us-teachers-are-
