“DONORSCHOOSE” FUNDRAISER BY ECHS MATH TEACHER - KATELYN JONES

We admire Katelyn’s commitment and tenacity to pursue Grants and Online Fund-raising approaches to raise the funds needed to replace the TI Calculators she presently must use everyday. Please read in Katelyn’s own words, why these

Calculators need replacement by visiting this “DonorsChoose” link:

https://www.donorschoose.org/project/improved-graphing-calculators/3410982

Feel free to Donate Online, or make an earmarked Ben Franklin Society Donation, to

remedy this situation. See the related PAGE-3 article that follows.

MEET THE NEW ECHS TEACHERS

Principal Erica Shoulders-Royster is pleased to announce four new Instructors at ECHS: Kerissa Armstead—Science, Lionel Morgan—Math, Sharon Garrett—English and Shanique Terry—English. Returning veteran Instructors include: Michael Grothmann—History, Sanjana Sharma—Science and Katelyn Jones—Math. ECHS now has 180 Students that attend school on a unique schedule that accommodates both the FC High School and VG Community College class

calendars. Students take one VGCC course in 9th grade, and by their 5th year (Super Senior), all VGCC courses.

ECHS TEACHER VOLUNTEERS

Consider becoming a Ben Franklin Society ECHS Teacher Volunteer. We pair up each Volunteer with an Instructor at ECHS to better understand what they need “to do their job”. Last year the Society provided nearly $5000 of specific items like

software licenses, whiteboards, textbooks, lab supplies, a raised-bed Garden and DC class trip. This year we plan to continue supporting ECHS Teachers! Our recent Volunteer Meeting with Principal Erica Shoulders-Royster helped kick-off new Club involvement initiatives. See Photo (L->R): Margaret Hilpert, Bob Radcliffe, Kerry

Carter, Jack Hussey, Linda Lamb, David Wanner (and Sharon Billings).

SOCIETY DONATES NEW MATH CALCULATORS

On August 23rd, ECHS Volunteer, Jack Hussey, presented Math Teacher, Katelyn Jones, with a

10-Pack Donation of new TI-84 Plus CE Calculators. We worked with Katelyn last year to write Grants to replace the existing 10-year old calculators, but were unsuccessful. Katelyn has initiated fund-raising efforts on her own (see PAGE-2) to replace 30 Calculators she sorely

needs to do her job! We will work this year to help Katelyn secure New Calculators.

For the second year now, the Society has paired BFS Volunteers, like Jack Hussey, with each ECHS Teacher to learn what they need “to do their job”. We only fund ECHS needs that

otherwise cannot be satisfied, which are needed by individual Teachers “to do their job”, and

which directly impact Student educational achievement.

Your Membership Dues and BreadWorks Fund-raising Event support provide the funds needed

to make targeted donations like this possible.

SOCIETY ”LEAD AND SHARE” INITIATIVES

The raised-bed Garden we built in March 2018 was weeded and re-planted on August 24th to support Science Teachers Kerissa Armstead and Sanjana Sharma. The Garden was

initially created to provide an outdoor “Living Lab” for Sanjana's Earth Sciences Class. We will continue expanding the educational impact of the Garden. 1) We are donating a WiFi-enabled Weather Station at ECHS that will record parameters and display forecasts over the internet, and be accessible by anyone with a Smartphone, iPad or Laptop. 2) Another

innovative donation - a LabDisc/GlobiLab Science Lab Prototyping Kit - will enable custom Science experiments to be designed that acquire up to 15 meas-urable parameters (e.g. temperature, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, pH). The

data is transmitted wirelessly to a Chromebook Computer that in turn records, analyzes and displays the measurements. Both of these innovations extend the capabilities of the Chromebook Computers we funded in 2017 to guarantee each ECHS Student had a Com-

puter to use, both at school and at home! We will help Kerissa and Sanjana explore how these new tools support STEM teaching methodologies. We also will assist Math Teacher,

Lionel Morgan, establish a new ECHS Web Design and Technology Club.

SOCIETY LANDSCAPE PLAN FOR THE ECHS CAMPUS

Volunteer Kerry Carter is spearheading a project at ECHS to create a long-term Campus Landscape Plan with help from Tim Hanauer of Earth Graphics. The goal is to establish an outdoor vision for student use of the limited space surrounding the ECHS Building. The Plan will serve as a starting point for discussion and presentation to the FCSS.

The Society will continue to track and advocate for the implementation of Tim’s recommendations.
