RETIRED RCMP OFFICER WHO HELPED PRESERVED THE PAST - DIES.

A retired Mounty who, in his younger days, stopped a mentally ill man, who gunned down three police officers, has died. John (Jack) White died. Tuesday at Royal Inland Hospital, He was 80 Years old. He leaves behind a widow, Helen, and two sons, Johns and Bryant. He also leaves the RCMP with a much stronger history because of his interest, passion and investigative skills. In 2002 white co-authored a book with William Hulguard called,.Honoured in Places: Remembered Mounties Across Canada.. Retired Gerry McRae said Wednesday White and his wife drove around Western Canada visiting graveyards and building a database of information about every RCMP member possible. The book came out of some of that information.“He was a very mild mannered person to look at and to talk to. But he had a lot of stuff inside him,” said McRae. When he retired after 35 years with the force, he was the Contract Policing officer for B.C.; his rank was chief superintendent. He was awarded two commendations: the Commissioner’s Commendations for Bravery for his efforts in hunting down a man who killed three RCMP officers in Peterson Creek, and a Commanding Officers Commendation in 1968 for his tenacity in the murder investigation of Anna Caroline Whitby in the Lower Mainland.It was in the Peterson Creek incident in 1962, in which White shot cop-killer George Booth dead, that he became known for in Kamloops.Booth had shot and killed constables Don Weisgerber, E. Joseph Keck and Gordon Pedersen. At that time, they were the entire day shift for the city force. White heard an officer had been shot in an incident in the lower part of the park, so he and two other officers headed to the top to cut of Booth. . En route they stopped to get their hunting rifles because they were only issued snub-nosed revolvers and .303 Lee-Enfields. Booth appeared suddenly and took three shots at White before the officer returned fire. He killed Booth with one shot.He was asked for comment decades later when four officers were shot to death by James Rozko in Mayerthorpe, Alta. White said all RCMP officers share a brotherhood because of the risks they face on the job. “it has impact. It’s like the loss of a member of your family,” he said at the time.Bob Fergusson knew White for years, first as his boss and later as a co-member of the RCMP Veterans Association. “There was nothing loud about Jack at all. He was a thinker, he was a man’s man,” he said. “He was very well respected, I respected him an awful lot. He was a very knowledgeable Policeman and an excellent investigator, so I’ve been told. Although when I knew him, he was my boss.” The two use to go for coffee regularly. They talk about the old days, usually the funny stuff but sometimes the sadder memories he said.“ Jack was the same as me. He would have done the whole thing over again. He spent in excess of 35 years in the force,” said Fergusson.“He is going to be missed.”

GRAND FALL/WINDSOR DISTRICT – REPESENTATIVE- ART DAYE On the 4/5 February 2011. Roger and I took part in a Curling for Charity Bon-spiel at the local Curling Rink. The profits are split between Muscular Dystrophy and Special Olympics. At one timeit was organized by the Grand Falls/Windsor Fire Department and, the RCMP. Alas it is nowdown to Roger and I. Roger is one of the co-chairs and does a great deal to make it a success. Ourteam ended up with the most points (experience I guess), however all prizes were draw prizes, so we didn’t get the Gold Ring, but we had a great weekend. On Tuesday the 22nd, we had our monthly breakfast, with the member and staff of the Detachment.. The menu was beans, bologna, eggs, juice,coffee and lots of laughs. Roger was the head Chef and I was Cookie, of course we had lots of help when it came time to eat. The following Vets were in attendance: Roger Hansford, Artie Daye,Ron McKelvie, Joe Young, Howard Dorman, and his wife Sybil. Everyone enjoyed the meal and and the gab session that followed. Due to weather conditions we missed our January get together.If you happen to be in our area on the last Tuesday of the month, your more than welcome to join usThe cost of breakfast is $5.00 and it is served at 8 AM. Our mystery this month was Howard’s wife Sybil.Howard is coming along well after his heart operation and sends his regards to all.That’s it for this monthRegards Artie

Retired RCMP Members Driving Instructors Newfoundland -Labrador Safety Services

They are always looking for new people, who might be interested in teaching young and older people how to drive. The work is part time, and they provide the necessary training that is required. The work is interesting and challenging and the Driving Instructors are paid by the Driving Lesson. Any person with a clean driving abstract, a knowledge of the Highway Traffic System and the laws pertaining thereto, and an interest in teaching, may apply to the Manager of Traffic Safety, at Newfoundland Labrador Safety Services by contacting him at their office at 1076 Topsail Road, Mount Pearl. There may be a retired RCMP member out there who might want to look into a part-time, but challenging second career. If so, he/she is welcome to give me a call to discuss it. All the best, Jeff Ayris, Sgt./RCMP/Retired.E-Mail: [email protected]

AND ON THE LIGHTER SIDE;

His wife's graveside service was just barely finished, when there was a massive clap of thunder, followed by a tremendous bolt of lightning, accompanied by even more thunder rumbling in the distance. The little, old man looked at the pastor and calmly said, 'Well, she's there.”
