Cross-CountrySkiing andSnowshoeing
Fishing
Canoeing
Bicycling
The refuge offers year-round access at two scenic hiking trails, Mahnomen and Blue Hill, both located on Sherburne County Road 9. The trails are for foot travel only. Bicycles and horses are not permitted. Pets must be on a leash at all times. From September 1 to February 28 the entire refuge, except for the closed area, is open to hiking.
Small game, waterfowl, and big game hunting is available on the refuge. Consult the refuge hunting brochure for regulations and a map detailing open areas.
Fishing is allowed on the refuge following state regulations. From March 1 to August 31, fishing is allowed only from non-motorized boats on the canoe route and on banks within 100 yards up or down-stream of the designated fishing access points. From September 1 to February 28, fishing is allowed throughout the entire refuge, except for the closed area.
Mahnomen and Blue Hill Trails are open to cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and hiking. Depending on snow levels, trails may be groomed. Hikers and snowshoers are asked to please share the trail and hike on the left side of the trail. From September 1 to February 28, the entire refuge, except for the closed area, is open to cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.
Bicycles are permitted on the Wildlife Drive and on county roads crossing the refuge. Hiking trails are closed to bicycling and no off-road travel is permitted. All traffic and directional signs must be obeyed. From September 1 to February 28 refuge service roads are also open to bicycling.
Canoeing is permitted only on Battle Brook south of Little Elk Lake and on the St. Francis River south of Battle Brook. Use is limited to daylight hours. Overnight camping and campfires are not permitted.
The refuge is open to mushroom, berry, and nut collection, for personal consumption only, within 100 feet of trails or public rights of way.

Welcome to Sherburne Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1965 to help protect and restore the habitats of the St. Francis River Valley for migratory birds and other wildlife. Today this 30,700 acre refuge encompasses wetland, oak savanna, and prairie opening habitats which are home to an astounding array of wildlife. Recreation is encouraged where it is compatible with wildlife and the land. The refuge is open to visitors 1/2 hour before sunrise to 1/2 hour after sunset within the guidelines listed in this brochure. Consult the website for refuge conditions, upcoming events, recent sightings, and electronic field guides.
The majority of the refuge is designated a wildlife sanctuary and is closed to all public access from March 1 to August 31 to allow wildlife to breed and raise their young, free from human disturbance. During this time, the only areas available for public use are the Wildlife Drive, hiking trails, the St. Francis River canoe route, and fishing access points.
The Learning Center is located on Sherburne County Road 9 at 16797 289th Ave NW. It is open for refuge events or for conservation- related activites by appointment only.
Recreation Opportunities The 7.3 mile-long Prairie’s Edge Wildlife Drive is located 1.2 miles north of Orrock on Sherburne County Road 5. It is open to vehicles from spring through fall, closing when winter weather warrants. During the state firearm deer season in November it is closed to vehicle traffic. The Wildlife Drive features four wildlife observation decks and three short walking trails.
The “Blue Goose”symbolizes theNational WildlifeRefuge System, anetwork of over 566refuges protectedand managed forwildlife, habitat, and people.
