Fazzalare, Winn, Nicholsand Kimpan touched first(1:49.85) while Anderson,Watson, Schmelzer andSpencer Ruman came in sec-ond (1:57.50). D. Abbottswam in second (1:46.75)and Nigro came in fourth(2:03.48) in the 200 yardfreestyle. Winn won the 200yard IM with a time of(2:13.71), J. French came infourth (2:28.61) and Iafratein fifth (2:30.98). The topthree spots in the 50freestyle went to Romeo: R.Abbott in first (24.04), Kim-pan in second (24.10) andNichols in third (24.83). TheBulldogs won the diving:Szydlowski in first (174.95),
Figurski in second (171.65)and Paul Hayes in third(113.50).
In the 100 yard butterflySchmelzer swam in third(1:05.95), C. French in fourth(1:07.28) and Anderson infifth (1:08.52). Fazzalarecame in second (52.04) in the100 yard freestyle, Kimpantouched third (53.35) and R.Abbott placed fourth (53.69).The 500 freestyle swimmerswere D. Abbott in second(5:05.69), Nigro in third(5:38.60) and Cusick in fifth(6:04.26). Romeo won the200 yard freestyle relay; theteam of Kimpan, R. Abbott,Nichols, and D. Abbotttouched in first (1:36.06) fol-lowed by the team of Iafrate,C. French, Schmelzer andNigro who scored in thirdplace. Freshman swimmerAnderson won the 100 yard
backstroke (1:08.19) and J.French came in second(1:09.63). The Bulldogs werestrong in the 100 yardbreaststroke. Winn placedfirst (1:06.28), Watson inthird (1:10.72) and RidgeDowns in fourth (1:19.02).Both of Romeo’s relay teamsscored in the 400 yardfreestyle relay. D. Abbott, R.Abbott, Nigro and Winntouched in first (3:33.97) andC. French, Iafrate, Schmelz-er and Anderson came inthird (4:05.18). Final scores:Romeo 117 and Henry Ford66.
Many swimmersachieved qualifying times tobe able to compete at theCounty Meet coming up Feb.4 and 5. The next meet willbe a Tri-Meet at Lake Orionon Jan. 29.

The Romeo High Schoolboys’ varsity bowling teamdug a deep hole, losing bothBaker games and were down10-0 heading into match playagainst Stevenson on Mon-day, Jan. 17. The only way towin the match was to winboth games and 6 of the 10match points — a tall orderfor any team.
Tyler Stokes was familiarwith Sunnybrook and usedhis local knowledge and greatplay to lead the Bulldogs to alast game 10th frame victorywith a 235–211/446 serieswinning one match point.Tyler Culver’s 192–235/427series won both of his matchpoints as did Matthew Faz-zalare with a 211–189/400series. Dylan Stokes earned amatch point with a213–204/417 series. AlecShipman shot 210–179/383series and was not able to wina match point, however, hemade the biggest shot of thenight needing the first strikein the 10th frame in order forRomeo to win the match. The
Bulldogs won the match 16-14.
The varsity girls’ wereoutscored by Stevenson in theBaker games, losing the firstby 10 pins and the second by58 pins. The Titans prevailedby a 26-4 score. Kaylla Kosterled the varsity girls in a lossto the 2nd place Titans withan impressive 194–236/429series and won both of hermatch points. Alicia Harbinwon a match point with a 185game and Kelsey Ruebel-mann won a point with a 166game.The team made a greateffort throughout the matchkeeping close to the Titansuntil the very end. ShannonKelley, Kaitlin Lowran andStephanie Seefried wereoutscored by their match playopponents but made somegreat shots throughout thematch.
The junior varsity boysstarted off well winning bothBaker games for a 10-0 leadheading into match play,shocking the 1st place andundefeated Titans. Stevenson
came alive in match play put-ting up big scores and domi-nating the Bulldogs and win-ning the match 19-11. PatrickBrunkey won the lone matchpoint for the Bulldogs with a202 game. Michael Steffens’215 and Andrew Nelson’s 199along with Joseph Seefried’s202 were solid games, but notenough to win a match point.
The Bulldogs visited Impe-rial Lanes on Saturday, Jan.15, bowling in the L’AnseCreuse North Bakers DozenTournament.The varsity girlsqualified 15th in the all-Baker 13-game formatadjusting to the heavier oilpattern. In the finals, theBulldogs faced number 2 seedChippewa Valley and fell 2-0in the best of three series.TheBulldogs were short handedas one of their teammateswas out with the flu, however,they worked very hard all dayand were rewarded by mak-ing the finals.
The junior varsity boyshad a great day qualifyingsolidly in 6th position. The
Bulldogs faced Ford II andadvanced, winning by a scoreof 2 games to 1. In the roundof 8, Romeo lost a thriller 2games to 1 to Lakeview.
The varsity boys qualifiedin the 18th spot, missing thetop 16 cut line by 79 pins.Theteam was not shooting spareswell throughout the day onthe heavier oil pattern.
The varsity boys camealive Jan. 14 against the firstplace and undefeated Ford IIFalcons in a MAC Red Con-ference match at ShelbyLanes, winning by a score of20-10. Romeo swept bothBaker games, winning thefirst by 11 pins and the sec-ond game by only 8 pins asShipman threw three clutchstrikes in the 10th frame ofthe second game to win thegame and totals.
The Bulldogs lost the firstmatch game 1,043-1,002 butregrouped and adjusted to thechanging lane conditions,winning the second game,977-946. D. Stokes led allplayers on the pair with a
264–193/457 series and wonboth of his match points. Faz-zalare showed his intelligenceand made some excellentadjustments allowing him towin both of his match pointswith a 190–211/401 series.Also contributing a matchpoint each was T. Stokes with202 and Shipman with 210.Culver bowled well and con-tributed to the team win withsome big shots, but was notable to outscore his opponentfor a match point.
The varsity girls battledevery shot against Ford II butcould not win enough pointsin the match game portion ofthe night to come away with awin losing 21-9. Romeo start-ed the Bakers by losing byonly 1 pin in the openinggame. The Bulldogs eruptedin the second game with a184 and won totals for a 6-4point lead after the Bakers. Inthe match play, Kelley led theBulldogs with a 247-179 426series and won a match point.Harbin made some goodadjustments and won a
match point with a 181 game.Koster also won a matchpoint with a 160 game. Rue-belmann, Lowran and S.Seefried worked hardthroughout the match but didnot win any match points.
The junior varsity boys gotoff to a great start, winningboth Baker games againstFord II and kept their foot onthe gas for a big win 20-10.The first match game camedown to the 10th frame andFord II was able to withstanda comeback attempt by theBulldogs winning by 6 pins.Like the varsity team, the JVteam made good adjustmentsto the changing lane condi-tions and won a thriller in the10th frame by 25 pins andtotals. J. Seefried led the teamwith a 187–195/382 seriesand won one match point.Steffens, Kirk Lightcap andNelson also won matchpoints. Brunkey could notovercome a number of splitsand did not win a matchpoint.
High school bowlers reach deep to come up with wins
The Powell Middle Schoolboys’ seventh grade basketballteam beat Iroquois, 38-20, onTuesday, Jan. 18 to bring theirrecord to 4-5.
Phillip Harrell scored ninepoints and Andrew Medaughscored eight. John Houbeckadded seven points and JaredOzella and Ryan Truax eachadded four points. Paul Hur-ley, Mitchell Heimbuch andNoah Soave each added twopoints.
The eighth grade team sawtheir second loss, 41-37,against Iroquois. Their recordis now 7-2.
Brad Sorenson scored agame-high 23 points. JakeKulczycki added four points.Sam Ebbitt, Anthony Proia,Mike Phillion, Ben Frenchand Trevor Atkinson eachadded two points.
The eighth grade team lost(42-38) on Thursday, Jan. 13,to L’Anse Creuse East.
Sorenson scored 12 pointsand Isahi Lara scored sixpoints. Ebbitt and JamesMales each added four points.Josh Mulrenin, French andDylan Liptov each addedthree points. Proia scored twopoints and Andrew Behringadded one point.
The seventh grade team is
posting a 3-5 record after a 48-42 loss to L’Anse Creuse.
Hurley scored 18 points fol-lowed by Heimbuch with 10points. Medaugh scored threepoints.Houbeck,Efrain Flores,Ozella, Tony Gojcevic andTruax each added two pointsand Brad Chambers addedone point.
The eighth grade teambeat L’Anse Creuse North onTuesday, Jan. 11. Sorensonscored 20 points and Lara 10points. Behring, AnthonyDragich and Matthew Kres-mery each added three pointsand French and Males addedtwo points each.
The seventh grade teamlost, 29-20, to North. Hurleyscored 10 points and Heim-buch five points. Medaughadded three points and Cham-bers and Houbeck each addedone.
The eighth grade teambeat Anchor Bay South 35-17on Monday, Jan. 10. Sorensonscored 10 points, Phillion andLiptov each added five pointsand Males scored four points.Atkinson scored three points.Lara, Ebbitt, Proia and Kres-mery each had two points.

Thursday,Jan.6.The eighth grade team won
45-30.Sorenson scored a game-
high 21 points and Malesscored 10 points. Lara scoredfour points. Mulrenin, ABehring,Ebbitt,Kulczycki andProia each added two points.
The seventh grade teamwon 21-20. Heimbuch scoredeight points followed by Hur-ley and Flores with four pointseach. Houbeck scored threepoints and Ozella scored twopoints.
The eighth grade teambeat Anchor Bay South, 37-11,on Tuesday,Jan.4.
The whole team con-tributed to the win, having 12of the 15 players score. Soren-son scored seven points fol-lowed by Lara with six andMulrenin with five. Kulczyckiscored four points and Phillionhad three points. Atkinson,Dragich, French, Males andAlex Nicley each added twopoints.Behring and Liptov fin-ished the scoring with a pointeach.
The seventh grade teamlost 22-25.
Hurley led the team witheight points and Heimbuchscored five points. Flores,Medaugh,Houbeck and Truaxeach added two points. Cham-bers added one point.
