Our thanks goes to Branch 1 Board Representative Carol Lopinski for allowing us to use the facility. Everyone agreed we have challenges ahead of us, but we also have exciting opportunities. By kicking off the Online CE Institute, NASW-AZ moves straight to the head of the line in professional, on-demand education. The President’s Pen

It is my pleasure to introduce myself as the incoming President to the Arizona Chapter Board of Directors. For the past year, I have stood in the shadows, waiting to pick up the gavel and move forward as your next President. I am humbled by your confidence in me to help lead the chapter for the next 2 years.

I have had the privilege of serving the Arizona Chapter in a variety of ways over the past several years, serving as Branch 1 Board Rep, Committee Chair and then later as Secretary. This experience and the knowledge gained from working with talented individuals have helped prepare me for the challenges that lie ahead.

I am often asked why I joined NASW and what keeps me involved. For me it’s simple, I became involved with NASW because I wanted to be part of an organization that is committed to its members and to the work we do. It’s an organization that advocates and works with its members to protect and strengthen our profession. But even more, being an active member for me is about being committed, not only to the association, but also the profession. It’s also a means through which I can get connected and stay connected with other unique individuals who are equally passionate about the field of social work.

I could not have gotten here without the help of early mentors as well as those of you who continue to provide guidance, insight and wisdom to me on my journey as a social worker and emerging leader. It is your professionalism, dedication and commitment to social work that continues to inspire me and give me hope and reassurance that the work we do is important, and it is making a difference, in our clients and the community. I would also like

to thank other Chapter leadership, volunteers and past presidents. Thank you for not only providing me with mentorship over the years, but thank you for also helping other members. Your expertise and passion is what has helped to move our association and chapter forward.

I would also like to welcome new Board members, and thank you for giving your time, energy and lending your expertise to help carry out chapter business.

The changes in our economy and turbulent political climate have challenged everyone - including associations - to think critically and respond in ways that meet these challenges. Now more than ever, we are called to action to band together and support each other. It is through the power of our connection that we can make a tremendous difference; our Members have proven there is strength in numbers.

Over the next year the Board of Directors will continue to work toward accomplishing the four main goals of our Strategic Plan:

a. Promote the Professionb. Influence Social Policyc. Strengthen the Organizationd. Promote Diversity

We have our work cut out for us, but I have every confidence that the Board is up for this task.

I would like to extend a personal invitation to become connected and actively involved in your AZ Chapter. There are many opportunities available and we welcome your input and participation. Joining once again with ASU School of Social Work, NASW-AZ has put together three-hour ethics and three-hour diversity workshops in the Phoenix area, Tucson, and Prescott. NASW-AZ continues to reduce its carbon footprintby creating online evaluation and CEU certificate process

When you attend one of the 11 Continuing Education workshops offered by NASW-AZ and ASU School of Social Work this fall, evaluations will be sent to your email on the Monday immediately following the Friday workshop. Once you complete your evaluation, your Certificate will appear on your computer screen for printing! This reduces paper for printing the evaluation instructions and form.

The Summit is a new one-day program that we began in 2009 in place of the Conference of years past. Social Workers are not only struggling with the everyday worries of the economy, but they also work with clients who are most impacted by these economic times. During these uncertain and volatile times, social workers need each other more than ever. This event is designed to be a sanctuary and day of support.

Since this year’s Summit will be held on Friday, Nov. 19, 2010, the Thanksgiving holiday gave us the idea for the theme: “A Special Thank You to Arizona’s Social Workers.”

This all-day event will be held at the Franciscan Renewal Center, 5802 E. Lincoln Drive, in Scottsdale.As soon as possible, online registration will become available at www.naswaz.com under Chapter Events.

NASW-AZ and ASU School of Social Work present: The REAL Reality Show: Critical Incidents in Clinical Supervision

Robert Kafes is in private practice where he facilitates several clinical case consultation groups for psychotherapists and clinical supervisors. Former director mental health services Southern Arizona Center Against Sexual Assault, regional director Arizona Youth Advocate Program, senior therapist and founding director, Institute of Continuing Education for Human Service Professionals, Jewish Family and Children’s Service. He teaches workshops on ethics, secondary traumatic stress and compassion fatigue, and the effects of client suicide of psychotherapists. He has received many awards, including Outstanding Teacher NASW-AZ, Governor Janet Napolitano/Attorney General Terry Goddard Award for Excellence Outstanding Sexual Assault Mental Health Professional, University of Arizona Health Sciences Center Hero in Women’s Mental Health, NASW-AZ Branch 2 and state chapter Lifetime Achievement Awards.

We will all collaborate and contribute to this presentation and conversation about messy and anxiety inducing situations we confront daily in the practice of clinical supervision. We will focus on lived experiences presented by the participants who are to bring three examples of:

1. one past or present critical incident scenario with their own current or past supervisor, administration of their organization, or external legal or regulatory body, and

2. two past or present critical incident scenarios experienced as supervisors in relation to their supervisees.

Frank and open (and fun!) discussion of our own experiences, learning issues, transferences and countertransferences, strengths and challenges will be a vital part of our collaboration. The instructor believes that we learn mostly from our errors and that is why what we do is an art that requires continual practice and fine tuning. Safety, confidentiality and respect for each others’ perspectives will be fostered to create a positive atmosphere for learning and growth.
