Tridosha In Ayurveda: Know Your Body (Dosha) & Understand Your Food

Tridosha defines the three fundamental energies or principles that create structure and form in our body. Each element is said to represent a specific kind of energy which governs the function of our bodies on the physical and emotional level. The three energies are known as vata, pitta, and kapha. Each individual has a unique balance of all three of these energies. For instance, Ether or Space is nuclear energy which represents consciousness. Air, which gives movement through the sensory and motor organs, is electrical energy. Water is chemical energy and in the body is present in plasma, cytoplasm, cerebrospinal fluid, vitreous humor, glandular secretions, saliva, pleural secretions, gastric mucosal secretions, sweat and urine. The Fire element is radiant energy. It is responsible for all bodily transformations and is responsible for all metabolic processes such as digestion, absorption and assimilation which lead to the transforming of food into tissue layers. It also regulates body temperature and creates knowledge by transforming our experiences through the senses and the mind. Earth is mechanical energy and is a condensed form of all the energies. Panchamahabhoots: The concept and the Principle of Ayurveda depends on the theory of Panchamahabhoots, the five basic elements of life that constituents our body. These five elements are Earth (Prithvi), Water (Jala), Fire (Agni or Tej), Air (Vayu) and Ether or Space (Akash). Ayurveda understands body, mind and spirit likewise. It divides the constitution of people into three categories—Vata (ether/air), Pitta (fire/water) and Kapha (water/earth). These are three basic energies or life forces that are the biological derivatives of the five elements and they govern all the function and structure of the body or its existence as a whole. According to Ayurveda, what exists in the Universe also exists in the internal body of every individual. The Panchamahabhuta or the five fundamental elements take origin from this Doshas or the immaterial qualities. Dosha (humor): Ayurveda system of medicine in all its aspects is largely dependent upon an understanding of the significance and nature of three humors – Vata, Pitta and Kapha, which is supposed to activate and govern the entire biological process from conception to death. The definition of Ayurveda is the dynamic state of balance of body, mind and spirits. Vata, Pitta and Kapha are the three Doshas of the body.

the three Doshas of the body. Perfect balance of three Doshas leads to health, imbalance in Tridosha leads to diseases. Each type of Dosha has a unique set of characteristics and the body type of a person depends on their physical and emotional attributes. Ayurveda follows the concept of understanding the Doshas in order to practice suitable Ayurvedic Diet, exercise and lifestyle pattern for healing and balancing of Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Know Your Body (Dosha) and Understand Your Food Maharishi Vagbhata says if you want to be healthy – Know your Body and understand your Food. This much is enough to take care of almost all ailments! One who knows the food requires no doctor. Personal analysis of Dosha helps you to prepare a diet chart according to the requirements of your body to maintain optimum health. Knowing your Dosha can also help you to know how an imbalance is likely to occur in yourself. It will help you to maintain a good and balanced personal, family and professional life.

“Realization of righteousness (dharma), wealth (artha) and happiness (sukha) depends on the long life. Hence, a person

desirous of long life should keep the lessons of Ayurveda in the highest esteem”

-Astanga Hridaya of Vagbhata.

Ayurveda Ayurveda is the oldest healthcare system in the world that originated in India several thousand years ago. Ayurveda comes from the words “ayu”, which means life from birth to death and “veda”, which means knowledge or science — thus, Ayurveda is the “Science of Life”! The aim of Ayurveda is to maintain the health of healthy person and cure the diseases of sick people. Ayurveda is a way of life!

Sarve Bhavantu Sukhinah, Sarve Santu Nir-Aamayaah,

Sarve Bhadraanni Pashyantu, Maa Kashcid-Duhkha-Bhaag-Bhavet ! Om Shanti Shanti Shanti !

Let everybody be happy,

Let everybody be free from all ailments, Let everybody see the bright side of everything,

Let nobody be forced to undergo any suffering! Om Shanti Shanti Shanti (Peace) !

The Purpose of life: Dharma- following the path of righteousness, Artha – earning money in a legal way, Kama – fulfilling our desire, Moksha – achieving Salvation According to Ayurveda, to achieve this purpose of life, one should concentrate on having a long life. To learn the science of Ayurveda, which explains how to achieve this purpose, ‘Obedience’ (Vidheya) is the most important quality. Do not engage yourself in things that are devoid of four pursuits Dharma (righteousness), Artha (wealth), Kama (pleasure), and Moksha (salvation): you should carry on the occupation without going contrary to them (dharma, artha, kama and moksha). The life span of a human is one hundred years. Dividing that time, he should attend to the aims of life in such a way that they support, rather than hinder each other.

Dinacharya from Vagbhata Sutras Dinacharya (Daily Routine) that is in harmony with the cycles of nature harmony is absolutely necessary to maintain balance of your body, mind and spirit. It guides you for self-healthcare management on what, how much, and when to eat and drink, food nutrition and food contraindications for preventing sickness, nurturing health, restoring balance and enhancing longevity of life. Ritucharya (Seasonal Routine) According to Ayurveda the constitution or Dosha of the body and the seasons are intimately related. Your health is affected by the qualities of the climate you live in; your outer environment influences your inner world. For example, when the air is damp, cold and wet it increases these qualities in your body. Hence there is an increase in mucous, catarrh and colds in winter. There are various environmental factors like temperature, humidity, wind, rain, clouds and atmospheric pressure and sunlight, etc that affect our health. Seasonal routine will help you in achieving balance of Doshas. Follow the seasonal routine to avoid changing stress of the seasons and associated diseases. Seasonal routine helps in achieving good benefits of the atmosphere. Practice of Dinacharya combined with Ritucharya will lead you to experience and enjoy a long, healthy and happy life. Ayurvedic Clock (Biological Clock): In life, we can go with or against the current of nature’s natural rhythms. Our diurnal rhythms and hormonal fluctuations are tied to the natural cycles and, when these are all in harmony with each other, life seems a lot easier – like swimming downstream instead of upstream. According to Ayurveda, the stress of living against these natural cycles is a fundamental violation of healthy lifestyle. Emerging science suggests that each cycle of the day as described in Ayurveda supports different activities. Living in harmony with nature’s cycles is a powerful lifestyle tool to de-stress the body and mind and begin to enjoy life. The Circadian Rhythm of the Body: In nature, there are two 12-hour cycles that are each divided into three smaller cycles. Each 4-hour cycle is linked to certain bodily functions governed by Vata (air & space), which controls the nervous system, Pitta (fire), which controls digestion and metabolism, and Kapha (earth and water) which controls immunity and structural strength. Understanding how to connect a daily routine to these cycles is powerful medicine in Ayurveda.

Ayurveda Home Remedies Home Remedies: Inadequate knowledge of preventive healthcare is the root cause of many common diseases among the population. Knowledge of herbal medicinal plants is part of our culture and tradition. Most of the civilizations have their own signature practices based on medicinal plants and it has been serving as a primary health care management for many centuries. It has been estimated that many households in the past were able to make home remedies for more than 30 to 40 indications but we have lost that knowledge during our journey from traditional way of living to modern living. Kitchen Pharmacy: Kitchen Pharmacy is the Ayurveda's gift to the world for health, healing and wellbeing. Kitchen Garden: Since early times a small plot near to the house has been used to produce varied and nutritious crops of vegetables, beans, herbs and fruits according to the season for use in the kitchen. The idea of having it as close to your back door as possible is that you will walk by it often and be continuously harvesting from it. In this way, you are encouraged to eat something from your home garden every breakfast, lunch, snack, and dinner each and every day.

The 7 Dhatus in Ayurveda: Tissues of the Body Course The Seven Dhatus (tissues) in Ayurveda Dhatu means tissue. The Seven Dhatus - rasa, rakta, mamsa, medas, asthi, majja and shukra are the seven types of tissue that make up the human body. The health of the seven Dhatus is paramount to the health of a person. When the seven Dhatus are functioning normally, they allow the body to expand. Pathology of the Dhatus results in either an excess or deficiency of tissue. A Dhatu becomes either deficient or excessive when a Dosha invades the tissue. Hence, it could be stated that the Dhatu is the site of the disease and the Dosha is the cause. When Vata enters a tissue, the tissue becomes lighter. Hence, it becomes deficient. When Kapha enters a tissue, the tissue becomes heavier and hence excessive. When Pitta enters a tissue, the tissue becomes overheated and burns up. Ayurveda Perspective on Food You are what you eat! Eating good-quality food is an essential part of health and longevity. The quality and quantity of our foods directly relate to the health our bodies systems and thus our psychic mechanism. In Ayurveda, the physiological and psychological functions of the body are interwoven. Ayurveda proposes that matter does not exist without energy, and that matter is essentially energy. Food grows in the earth, within rich, nutritious soil that absorbs all the other elements—water, fire, air, and ether—in order to thrive. Every time you eat foods, you bring the elements into your body and they become your body. From an Ayurvedic perspective, it takes about 30-35 days for the foods you eat today to transform into your seven tissues (Dhatus). This range of time is assuming that you are able to digest what you eat without creating Ama (toxic sludge, slimy obstructions). At the end of the 30-35 day cycle, you will come to appreciate how and why you are what you eat.

Ayurveda and the Seven Dhatus (Tissues) Transformation Crucial to the development and nourishment of the body, the Dhatus unfold successively as follows, starting with the nourishment derived from the product of digestion. The Dhatus are the basic bodily tissue elements. Like the Doshas, they too are formed from the five elements of space, air, fire, water and earth. With the help of the digestive fire, the Dhatus form the protective biological system of the body. The flow of tissue (Seven Dhatus) transformation Rasa (fluids): The first layer of your tissues that is formed is called Rasa which contains nutrients from digested food and subsequently nourishes all tissues, organs, and systems. It is the main fluids in your body such as plasma and lymph, and for women their breast milk and menstrual blood. Rasa keeps the body juicy! And if the body is well hydrated, it will make you feel satisfied on a deep psychological level. Rakta (blood): Healthy Rasa leads to healthy blood and will make you feel invigorated rather than tired or anemic (which are indicators of vata (depletion) in your blood). Rakta (blood) governs oxygenation in all tissues and vital organs and thus maintains life-function. Mamsa (muscle): Mamsa (muscle) covers the delicate vital organs, performs the movements of the joints, and maintains the physical strength of the body. It Invigorates blood supports new muscle tissues. With healthy muscles, a person tends to feel courageous and self-confident to take on physical challenges. Medas (fat): After Mamsa come fatty tissue development, an essential component for our well-being and offers oiliness and lubrication to the tissues of the body. When medas is healthy, a person may notice ease in both giving and receiving love. Meda (fat) maintains the lubrication of the tissues and serves as an insulating material to protect the body’s heat. Ashti (bone): Asthi (bone and cartilage) gives support to the body’s structure. Bone strength is based on all the tissues that develop before it does. With strong bones, you will feel the urge to stand tall, maintain good posture, and TH

learn some bone strengthening activities to prevent the typical diseases that come from over- or underuse. Majja (nervous system): Majja (bone marrow and nerves) fills up the bony spaces, carries motor and sensory impulses, and facilitates communication among the body’s cells and organs. The integrity and strength of your nervous system is directly related to your food. If you eat foods with low nutrient value, your nervous system will not do well under stress. Foods with higher nutrient content will help build more resilient tissue to deal with the stress of day-to-day living. A sign that your majja is healthy is that you find it easy to relax and remain calm. Shukra (Reproductive fluids): Shukra and Artava (male and female reproductive tissues), the last phase of transformation produces the pure essence of all bodily tissues for sustaining life or can create a new life. Each Dhatu is dependent on the previous one. If the raw materials of digestion are inadequate, or if there is a problem in any stage, each successive Dhatu will not receive the nourishment it needs and the respective tissues or organ systems will suffer. So for good health, all seven Dhatus must develop and function properly. The three waste products (malas) are faeces, urine, and sweat. The body must be able to produce these in appropriate amounts and to eliminate them through their respective channels. Ojas In Ayurveda In Sanskrit, “Ojas” means "Vigor." According to Ayurveda food is transformed into 7 Dhatus or tissues from properly digested, nourishing food, sequentially the final product is called “Ojas” ! Ojas is the essential energy for the body and mind that is gleaned from eating pure and nourishing (sattvic) foods, practicing Dinacharya (Ayurveda daily routine) and establishing “balance in life”. The seat of Ojas within the body is at the heart. It gives life and energy to the cells in the body. In the practice of Ayurveda, Ojas is responsible for vitality, strength, health, long life, immunity, mental and emotional wellbeing.

Page 16: AYURVEDA LIFESTYLE COURSE · This involves basic Yoga asanas or postures that include mediation and pranayama or yogic breathing, as tools for healing and restoring health and balance

Preservation, Procreation and Expansion Self prevention is a natural instinct. Your physical body knows self preservation which is good for your existence. When you take food, your body is converted one physical energy to another physical form. Food conversation is a natural process - preservation, procreation and expansion. You want to enter from physical to another dimension of life which is not physical - moving from bound to boundless. You need a vehicle to transcend from bound to boundless. You create Ojas for smooth passage. It is a non physical energy with its own form. Physical has a boundary. You want to become boundless. Ojas is the vehicle to travel from physical to non physical dimension. Your life will become well rounded circular when you create enough Ojas around you. When your existence will become circular, you will have least resistance. Your passage will be clear and your life will sail smoothly towards boundless. Ama In Ayurveda According to Ayurveda the opposite of Ojas is “Ama”. Weak digestion, consuming non-sattvic (unhealthy) foods and harboring destructive habits or emotions produce Ama in your body which is a toxic residue in the cells that promotes disease. Ojas is the pure substance that is accumulated from properly digested, nourishing food. Non-sattvic foods, like meat, processed foods, oily foods, reheated foods and foods that aren't freshly prepared, are close to impossible for the body to convert into Ojas.

You can counteract Ama by repairing your Ojas You can invigorate, repair and protect your Ojas by following a sattvic diet, practicing meditation and promoting balance in all aspects of your life. During yoga practice, individuals can practice heart-opening, restful asanas in order to fortify and increase their Ojas. TH

AYURVEDA DIET

Your body needs nutritious & well-balanced diet To quote one of the great legends of ancient Indian Ayurveda, Maharishi Vagbhata, 90% of all diseases originate from our stomach. Hundreds of years later, this statement particularly holds true in our times. A sedentary lifestyle and lack of proper nutrients have led to an increased incidence of lifestyle diseases like diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, asthma, cancer, obesity etc. A nutritious and a well-balanced diet are essential for a healthy body. To get proper nutrition, follow a balanced diet. Essential nutrients and vitamins like zinc, manganese, vitamin C, protein, potassium, calcium, magnesium and phosphorus provide the required stimulus for improving immunity against infections. A daily diet should contain fresh leafy greens and colored vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, beans, whole grains, and low-fat dairy products, all in their proper proportions. Healthy food helps keep our mind sharp, body active and promotes a healthier lifestyle Nutrition, Vitamins and Minerals Nutrition is the intake of food, considered in relation to the body’s dietary needs. Good nutrition – an adequate, well balanced diet combined with regular physical activity – is a cornerstone of good health. Poor nutrition can lead to reduced immunity, increased susceptibility to disease, impaired physical and mental development, and reduced productivity. Body’s immune system is strengthened by nutritions, carbohydrates, protein, fats, hormone, fibre, vitamins and minerals in vegetables, fruits and beans. Multivitamins can never be a substitute for adequate nutrition. Those who actually excludes fruits, vegetables, beans and grains from his/her diet, chances are he/she may have weak immune system. Popular as a “super food”, vegetables and beans are the great source of protein – mung beans, peas, soybeans, sprouts, spinach, mushrooms, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, broccoli, brussel sprouts, artichokes, asparagus, corn etc.

Healthy nutrition is essential for maintenance of good health. Nutrition of the body means supply of the essentials nutrients in adequate quantities and in proper portions to all the cells and tissues of the body so as to keep the structure and the functions of the body sound state. The basic components of food are proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals. Vitamins don’t give any calories but they are indispensable in regulating the chemical processes in the body metabolism. Minerals also play a vital role in the body metabolism. As a general rule, one can remember that diet which is otherwise adequate in proteins, fats, carbohydrates and vitamins will provide all the minerals in sufficient quantities. Three basic components of the food proteins, fats and sufficient quantities of carbohydrates should be included in your diet to make up the total daily caloric requirements. Balanced Diet - The Six Tastes of Ayurveda The growth and development of your body depends on nutritious and a well-balanced diet. The diet should be balanced by including all Six Tastes (Rasas) – sweet, sour, salty, pungent, bitter and astringent. Each of which has a vital role to play in our health, emotion and wellbeing. In Ayurveda food is considered as the central to health and happiness! Incorporate all the Six Tastes in your meal to keep your digestion regulated. While right dietary practices can give you good health, wrong dietary practices can give sickness. For proper nutrition of the body, sufficient amounts of proteins, fats, carbohydrates, water, vitamins and minerals are essential for balanced health. As no single food staff gives this, it is necessary that a good diet should contain all these principles in correct portions and in adequate quantities. Such a diet which ensure supply of all the essential nutrients is known as “Balanced Diet”. So consume natural grains, pulses, vegetables and fruits that are high in fiber, low in fat and rich in nutrition. AY

“When diet is wrong medicine is of no use. When diet is correct medicine is of no need.”

- Sage Charaka, Charaka Samhitha BC 200

Include all Six Tastes at every meal for a Balanced Diet: The Six Tastes (Rasas) is made from the same five elements that make up the Doshas: space, air, fire, water and earth. And each taste has an effect on Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. When your Doshas are out of balance, these six tastes can help you repair this imbalance. In order to balance your Doshas, regulate digestion and feel satisfied after eating, it is critical to include at least a small portion of each of the six tastes in every meal. Below are a few examples of foods that might be found in each taste category.

Digestive Health: Digestion of food is more important than eating it Your digestive health is directly impacted by the foods you eat and the lifestyle you live. By taking steps to improve your digestive health, you'll help your digestive system to function more efficiently, improving your health and well-being.

Page 20: AYURVEDA LIFESTYLE COURSE · This involves basic Yoga asanas or postures that include mediation and pranayama or yogic breathing, as tools for healing and restoring health and balance

Follow Vagbhata Sutra to improve your digestive system:

• Fix time for your meals - Jatharaagni / digestive fire is at highest for 2 ½ hours after sunrise. This is the time to have the biggest meal of the day. So have your morning meal / breakfast / lunch / 2 ½ hours from the sun rise and the dinner has to be taken 48 minutes before sunset (have lunch at around 9 am and dinner at around 6 pm). Morning meal should be the heaviest meal of the day. It’s best to have your meals on fixed time every day for maximum benefit.

• Eat fresh and warm food - Any food should be consumed within 48 minutes of cooking. The body is best able to utilize the nutrition from food when it is consumed in this time frame. Warm cooked food needs less digesting. A meal of warm foods makes you feel satisfied with what you eat, and you are more likely to fully digest it.

• Chew you food 32 times. Eat your food slowly

• Partake of food only sitting on the floor in Sukhasana

• Do Not Skip Your Meals. Skipping meals is never a good thing, but is especially harmful to Vata types and Vata imbalances. Eating three healthy meals a day at proper times. Skipping meals will inevitably lead to anxiety, spaciness, dizziness, low energy, depletion, restless thoughts, sleep issues, and other Vata disorders.

Learning content in this Class: The course will orient you on the rare immunity boosting nutritional and delicious Ayurveda food.

Pranayama: Yoga Sutra has explained 8 limbs of yoga (Ashtanga yoga). Those are – Yama, Niyama, Asanas, Pranayama. Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyan and Samadhi. “Prana” is Breath or vital energy in the body and “ayama” means control. So Pranayama is “Control of Breath”. AYURVEDA COOKING

Whatever is beneficial for worldly happiness, whatever pertains to Vedic practices and

whatever action leads to spiritual upliftment is said to be established in food – Caraka Samhita

Would you like to integrate Ayurveda lifestyle into your daily routine at home? Are you interested in heathy food to cook some Ayurveda recipes? This is easier than you might think! In the Ayurveda cooking it is generally important to ensure that the various constitutional types Kapha, Vata and Pitta use different kinds of foods. Therefore, always pay close attention to what Dosha you are, and accordingly, which Ayurveda foods are best suitable for your health as well as healing! The science of Ayurveda cooking: You are what you eat. For centuries, this has been the basis of most cuisines across the world. But it was Ayurveda, which first introduced the art of ‘personalized cooking’ based on the understanding of the unique combination of Vata (Ether), Pitta (Fire) and Kapha (Water) that constitutes the human body and balances its life forces, the Ayurvedic cuisine encompasses dishes made with such combination of food that optimizes these elements in the human body. In fact, it went a step further by demonstrating how not only what you eat makes a difference but how it is cooked also makes a difference. The Art of Ayurveda Cooking: It is not enough to provide a balanced diet, but the food should be palatable and enjoyed by the people. The art of preparation of healthy food and appetizing food has no limit. One of the golden rule is to eat varieties of food which not only avoid monotony, but ensure better nutrition. The principles of nutrition and the art of Ayurveda cooking, are essential for longevity, health and happiness. The Six Tastes of Ayurveda : In Ayurveda there are 6 tastes: sweet, astringent, sour, salty, pungent and bitter. Just like the Doshas, each taste is composed of two elements. For instance, the sweet taste is composed of earth and water, the sour taste of fire and water. We have already seen that each element has certain gunas (qualities); for instance, the gunas (qualities) of water include heavy, cold, moist, liquid, slow. By carefully studying the elements of certain tastes and the

corresponding gunas (qualities) you will quickly understand what the influence of those tastes is on your mental and physical condition. Madhura (sweet), Amla (Sour), Lavana (Salt), Tiktan(Bitter), Katum (Pungent), Kashaya (Astringent) are the six types of Rasa. They are successively lower in energy. That means, Sweet taste imparts maximum energy to body and the astringent, the least. In the list of tastes, the first three, i.e. sweet, sour and salt mitigates Vata and increases Kapha. The last three, i.e. bitter, pungent and astringent tastes mitigates Kapha and increases Vata. Astringent, bitter and sweet taste mitigates Pitta. Sour, salt and pungent tastes increase Pitta. Some food items are hot in nature and some food items are cold in nature. Generally, substances that have astringent, bitter and sweet tastes are coolant in nature and sour, salt and pungent tastes are hot in nature. While eating and during digestion, the first, second and third part are dominated by Kapha, Pitta and Vata respectively. A balanced diet that includes grains, dal or beans, vegetables and the yogurt drink should take only about 30 minutes for preparation and cooking. You will enjoy a home-cooked Ayurveda meal that is fresh, wholesome, nutritious and balanced. Ayurveda Recipes: The art of lactic fermentation – yogurt and ghee, vegetarian food, soups, raw food diet, par boiled food, steam cooking, payesh (a dish that combines the fat in milk with the starch in rice to boost energy) were Ayurveda inventions. Often considered as the father of Indian vegetarian cuisine, thanks to its plants and plant produce’s heavy usage, Ayurveda in its journey to evolve dishes that create the perfect balance in the body has also introduced most of the cooking styles that are termed healthy today, like pan frying, roasting, steaming and blanching. What also lends Ayurveda cooking its unique identity aside the cooking method used for each food and the good use of local ingredients, is the use of certain herbs and spices. Adding Ayurveda spices to your daily food is a great way to prevent disease and optimize health. The Benefits of Home Cooking : Studies show that when you eat together, your kids and family are much healthier. Eating together is linked to less obesity, kids doing better in school, less tension and brings more happiness within the family. Involving your children in cooking is not only a fun thing to do, but also a great way to teach them healthy eating habits!
