We are delighted by what has been achieved at the Centre for Turkey Studies (CEF-TUS) over the past year – from the relationships we have helped to strengthen to the dialogue we have fostered and the meetings we have organised. Over the last
year we have hosted numerous roundtables, debates and forums on a wide range of topics and issues, including the failed coup attempt of July 2016, the constitutional referendum, civil-military relations, the integration of Turkish, Kurdish and Turkish Cypriot communi-ties in the UK, the Cyprus issue and peace talks, the Kurdish issue, Turkey’s foreign policy and Turkey’s changing relationship with the EU.
We have continued to produce in-depth briefings and expert analysis for CEFTUS mem-bers on issues as they arise in Turkey and the wider region, such as the restructuring of the Turkish armed forces, Turkey’s economic fortunes and how Brexit might impact upon UK-Turkey relations.
At CEFTUS, we pride ourselves on our non-partisan, fair and balanced approach, with our guests and supporters coming from various political traditions and from across the spec-trum in both the UK and Turkey. Over the past year we have received invaluable support and assistance from Conservative, Labour, SNP and Liberal Democrat MPs and Lords, and we have hosted representatives from Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) as well as the opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) and People’s Democratic Party (HDP). Our cross-party approach allows us to properly engage with the issues and build di-alogue, fostering understanding across traditional political divides. Now in our sixth year, this sense of understanding and dialogue drives our work more than ever.
Over the next year, we will be looking to host more community and cultural events, collabo-rating with different partners and building on the success of a recent Turkish, Kurdish and English poetry evening in collaboration with the Poetry Translation Centre at the Arcola Theatre. We will also continue to hold expert panel series and public forums with special guest speakers from the UK and Turkey.
Please contact us via email at [email protected] for more information about how to get in-volved in our community. Please visit www.ceftus.org for details of our events and projects. You can also find us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter @CeftusOrg for updates and information about upcoming events and projects.
We appreciate all the support of our members and we look forward to seeing what 2018 will bring for CEFTUS, for Turkey, and for the community here in the UK.

On Sunday October 9th 2016, CEFTUS host-ed its Fifth Anniversary Gala with over 900 guests at the Westminster Park Plaza Hotel near the British Houses of Parliament. CEF-TUS also celebrated the achievements and contributions of the UK’s Turkish, Kurdish and Turkish Cypriot communities to Britain in business, education, politics, media, law, financial services and other areas with the 2016 Community Achievement Awards. The evening featured a selection of musical acts, including a piano and cello recital and per-formances by famous Turkish singers Yasar Kurt and Zulfu Livaneli. London-based Turk-ish singer-songwriter Olcay Bayir, dubbed “an impressive newcomer to London’s vibrant global music scene” by Guardian Music, also gave an excellent performance.
The event was attended by numerous fig-ures from the political, business and cultur-al communities of Britain and Turkey. High profile politicians attended, including the Labour Party Leader and MP for Islington North, Rt Hon Jeremy Corbyn. Mr Corbyn spoke about his support for CEFTUS’ work in providing a forum for free and open dis-cussion regarding Turkey, and how this has helped in promoting important human rights and values such as freedom of speech and self-expression. Other Labour politicians in-cluded George Howarth, MP for Knowsley, Kate Osamor, MP for Edmonton, John Spellar, MP for Warley, and Graham Stringer, MP for Blackley and Broughton. The Conservative Party was represented by Kwasi Kwarteng, MP for Spelthorne, and by a delegation from the Conservative Muslim Forum. The Scottish National Party was represented by Patrick Grady, MP for Glasgow North, and Martyn
Day, MP for Linlithgow and East Falkirk. Mayors of various London boroughs, includ-ing Cllr Ali Gul Ozbek of Haringey, Cllr Saleha Jaffer of Lambeth and Cllr Gurdial Bhamra of Redbridge also attended.
Figures from across the political spectrum in Turkey attended too, including the former Justice and Development Party MP Mehmet Emin Ekmen, the Republican People’s Party MP Mustafa Sezgin Tanrikulu, and Berdan Ozturk, an MP from the Peoples’ Democratic Party. The attendance of figures from various British and Turkish parties attests the signif-icance of CEFTUS to Anglo-Turkish relations as a proud champion of dialogue between all groups.

“When we established CEFTUS five years ago we had two clear goals. Firstly, to provide an inde-pendent, non-partisan forum for discussion about Turkey and the region for the British people, and for the Turkish, Kurdish and Cypriot communities. And secondly to create dialogue between experts from Turkey and the UK, building bridges be-tween the two countries and their peoples. Since then, we have done all this and more. We are now recognised as the leading name in Turkey-UK relations in both Britain and Turkey.”
The gala received delegations from leading companies and sponsors such as Cobra Beer and featured a recorded message of support from the company chairman, Lord Karan Bil-
imoria CBE. Other notable business people included the managing director of Molson Coors Phil Whitehead, who gave a speech and presented an award. Dr Rami Ranger CBE, chairman of Sun Mark Ltd, also praised the role of CEFTUS in promoting the integration of the Turkish and Kurdish communities in the UK. The event was sponsored by compa-nies belonging to high-profile members of Britain’s Turkish, Kurdish and Turkish Cyp-riot communities, including Altan Kemal of Alton & Co and Metin Pekin of XPO Online.
The fifth anniversary gala was an excellent celebration of the many of achievements of CEFTUS in its first five years as a non-profit
organisation in building bridges between Britain and Turkey, providing a space for di-alogue and discussion of the issues of the day and enhancing the profile of Turks, Kurds and Turkish Cypriots in UK public life.

CEFTUS receives cross-party and cross-community support in the UK and Turkey, and we do not owe allegiance to any government, political party or institution. We do not receive any funding and so we encourage all those who are interested in our work of strengthening ties between Turkey and the UK to join our organisation. The support of our members allows us to do what we do, and we couldn’t be more appreciative of them.
