A COMPLETE RANGE OFLOW LOSS MICROWAVECOAXIAL ASSEMBLIESAXON’ can offer three families of flexible lowloss microwave coaxial cable assemblies :

AXOWAVEFEP - (Fluorethylenepropylene) or PU (Polyurethane) insulated assem-blies.

AXOLABAssemblies protected by :

• a flexible stainless steel hose and a thermoplastic insulation ; crushresistance is greater than 150 kg on a 5 cm cable length,

• a flexible stainless steel spring and a polyolefine insulation ; crushresistance is higher than 80 kg on a 5 cm cable length.

On request, these assemblies can be delivered without insulation.

AXON' CABLE,

manufacturer of cables and

interconnect solutions for

advanced technologies,

propose microwave coaxial

assemblies with very low

losses. Right through from

manufacture of conductor,

coaxial cable to complete

assemblies, AXON’

optimises its expertise

suited for customer’s

AXOSPECCustom designed assemblies

Hybrid harnesses

AXON’ has developed hybrid harnesses, to meet very specific require-ments for complex applications. They integrate various configurations ofwires and terminations such as coaxials up to 40 GHz, high flex wires, shielded pairs, fiber optics, power cables, optimised shielding etc... andare connected to circular, miniature or coaxial connectors (SMA, N, TNC, ...).

Please contact us for your special needs

High flex microwave assemblies

The high flex microwave assemblies of the Axowave U series have beenspecially designed for high repetitive bending as required for dynamicapplications (radar, surveillance or navigation systems etc).Materials have been chosen to guarantee good mechanical and electricalcharacteristics. The 5 U version (diameter of 5 mm) for example is able tokeep its electrical properties (1.95 dB/m at 18 GHz) after 1 million bends. These cables can be used at temperatures between - 40°C and +95°C.

EMI-EMC

The AXON’ EMI/EMC laboratory has been approved by the French Armyto carry out transfer impedance measurements.

AXON’ guarantees the electromagnetic protection adapted to the environ-mental conditions of the assembly. Two types of equipment are at AXON’s disposal to evaluate the EMI pro-tection of each assembly :

• Measurement of the transfer impedance of cable or assembly using :

- Triaxial method up to 80 MHz ;- Micro-strip method up to 2 GHz.

• Measurement of the shielding efficiency of assemblies from 500 MHz upto 18 GHz, using a mode-stirred chamber.

CELLOFLON® DIELECTRIC

For excellent electrical performances

AXON’ use porous PTFE dielectric for the manufacture of microwavecoaxial assemblies to obtain a dielectric constant as close as possible toair. The microwave transmission will thus be improved. AXON’ hasdeveloped and patented its own expanded PTFE products, brand-namedCELLOFLON®, available in taped and extruded version. The low dielectric constant of CELLOFLON® helps to considerably improvethe electrical performances of the cable, achieving lower insertion losses,a higher cut-off frequency and faster propagation velocity. For identicalperformances, the dimensions of a CELLOFLON® cable will be smallerand the cable’s weight and volume lower. For example, the insertion lossesof a 1 m AXOWAVE 8 G assembly, terminated by two N straight maleconnectors are only 1.0 dB at 18 GHz.The use of CELLOFLON® improves the phase stability of the assembliesunder mechanical stress, as well as when submitted to temperaturechanges.

Applications

AXOWAVE, AXOLAB and AXOSPEC microwave coaxial assemblies aremainly used as measurement and equipment assemblies, as well as forantennae. In the aeronautics field, they are used for radar, antennae, surveillance systems.

AXON’ microwave coaxial assemblies are used in a frequency range of0 to 40 GHz at temperatures of -55°C to +125°C or -40°C to +95°Cdepending on the type of jacketing material.

The cables are terminated either by SMA, N or TNC connectors. On request, an overmoulding of the cable / connector termination can bedone to assure even higher waterproofing and mechanical protection.

For outdoor applications, please contact us.

For use in radiocommunications (GSM, DCS, PCS, etc...) AXON’ offersassemblies for base receiver stations with a very low intermodulation level(PIM < -155 dBc). These assemblies are terminated with metric connectorsseries 7/16 and 4.1/9.5.

For special applications, please advise the requested environmental(frequency, temperature, etc...), and electrical (insertion loss in dB/m atfrequency, VSWR, characteristic impedance) characteristics, along withthe type of connectors, and if needed, the flexlife, phase matching, shieldefficiency, ... to allow us to design the cable assembly most suited to yourneeds.

The AXOWAVE assemblies are delivered in individual boxes and areidentified by a heatshrink tube with the following marking in blackcharacters : cable type, “Axon”, batch no. and serial no.

Phase matched assemblies on a 15 ways micro-wave coupler

QUALITY ASSURANCEAXON’ is ISO9001/2000 approved

Electrical and dimensional controls are carried out at each stage of thecable manufacture. The VSWR (return loss) and insertion losses are measured on 100% ofall assemblies produced, and a test certificate is automatically supplied.Other measurements can be carried out on request : phase matching, shielding efficiency, intermodulation etc...

Example of assembly

Insertion loss of AXOWAVE assemblies

In order to calculate the insertion loss of an assembly, take the attenuationof the cable (in dB/m) shown on each cable’s data sheet, multiply it by thecable length (in m) and add the connector losses.

Calculation formula (with straight connectors) :

αα (dB) = cable attenuation (dB/m) x cable length (m) + 0.06 √√f (GHz)

With : α = insertion lossf = operating frequency (GHz)

Page 11: axowave

IX© 2006, AXON’ CABLE - released 16 Oct 2007/B

Typical insertion loss values for some connectors (in dB) :

Straight connectors : 0.06 √f (with f in GHz) Swept connectors : 0.07 √f(with f in GHz).

Stability of insertion loss as a function oftemperature

To calculate the insertion loss at a given temperature, please usethe following formula :

αα T = 1.05 x αα 23°C x √√ [0.0038 (T - 23) + 1]

with : α T = attenuation at given temperature T (in dB)α 23°C = attenuation at ambient temperature (23°C) in dB.Refer to each cable’s data sheet.T = given temperature (in °C)
