EDITORIAL

A true network of opportunitiesBy Atul Rajput, Regional Director, Northern Europe, Axis Communications

Welcome to our second edition of the Axis Northern Europe partner magazine #AxisInnovates.

Partnership is an overused word in business today. But there is no question that our world is built on relationships, whether it is in our personal lives or in the workplace. However in business the old adage of “people buy from people” still rings true, even in the modern age of mass digital communication.

At Axis we understand the importance of strong relationships and that’s why we have put our partner programme at the heart of our business for the past 30 years.

What do we mean by partner? In our view it is pretty simple: it’s a trusted relationship that benefits both sides, and in the ideal scenario, leads to 1+1 equaling 3. We are stronger working together than either of us could be on our own. When we win, you win.

We made a strategic decision many years ago that our channel partners would be the main interface to our worldwide end user customer base. As such, our channel partners are undoubtedly the lifeblood of our business and we invest significant time, money and resource into supporting our channels partners and forging successful win-win business partnerships.

2015 represented the 10 year anniversary of the Axis Academy, an unparalleled education programme which has trained over 50,000 channel partners across the globe. Coupled with a long history of “industry firsts” such as the first HDTV Network Camera, the first Thermal Network camera and our award winning Lightfinder technology, Axis have remained committed to providing leading edge network video solutions that our partners can benefit from and provide best in class solutions for their customers.

Underpinning this commitment to our channel partners, has always been a “röd tråd” (a Swedish expression literally meaning “red thread”) of consistently promoting open standards, driving excellence and strengthening our partners’ competitiveness. The term “red thread” actually originates from the Greek mythology where king Theseus found his way out of Minotaur’s labyrinth by following a “red thread”.

You are probably wondering what relevance this last statement has to the video surveillance industry? The link is to the myriad of truly innovative third party technology solutions that complement Axis Network Cameras, currently spanning over 1500 companies across the globe and representing the most comprehensive technology alliance program in the industry As our channel partners have often expressed that it can be difficult to navigate through this labyrinth of technology solutions, Axis Northern Europe are hosting a partner showcase event to promote these best of breed solutions, with two events scheduled in November to take place in the UK and Sweden.

Inside this issue you will find an overview of the 37 innovative partners who will be joining us at our showcase event, possibly the largest single event Axis have ever hosted to promote best of breed solutions under one roof. It represents a unique opportunity to engage with some of the most innovative technology companies in the security industry, spanning a wide variety of industry segments and a very diverse set of applications spanning security and business optimization.

At Axis we are very proud of the huge variety of applications and services that complement our market leading security products. However we also understand it can be challenging in a fast moving world to keep up to date on new technology, to enable our partners to be flexible and responsive to new business opportunities.

So if you can find the time I would encourage you to come along to our technology partner showcase events and spend some time learning about the huge breadth of opportunities available to you as a partner of Axis. After all, great partnerships are built on a foundation of win-win relationships that deliver real value to customers, something which has been at the core of the success Axis has achieved in its 30 years.

AXIS F34 Surveillance SystemAXIS F34 Surveillance System is an easy-to-install, highly discreet four-camera surveillance sys-tem that is ideal for small stores and offices. This solution comes with all the necessary hardware and software for a complete and integrated remote video monitoring and management system.

AXIS F34 Surveillance System includes one AXIS F34 Main Unit with an exter-nal power supply and four thumb-sized AXIS F1004 Sensor Units that can be discreetly recessed- or surface-mount-ed on ceilings and walls using the included accessories. Also supplied are two AXIS Surveillance microSDXC Card 64 GB (with SD card adaptors) that are specifical-ly engineered to handle continuous over-writing for lasting performance.

The cards are compatible with AXIS F34 Main Unit’s built-in SD card slots for local storage of recordings and enable the sys-tem to run independently without the need for an external PC or a recording device for day-to-day operation.

Another important component of the system is the use of the freely down-load-able video management software, AXIS Camera Companion 3.10, for easy and secure remote monitoring and management from any device with the software application.

The system operates efficiently with two Axis 64 GB cards that allow one to two week worth of video recording to be retained before overwriting takes place.

Recording and storage are optimized, thanks to smart programs and technologies in AXIS F34 Main Unit and AXIS Camera Companion 3.10 that enable:

> Automatic configuration of AXIS F34 Main Unit for recording based on video motion detection> Support for Video Motion Detection 3, a video analytic program that has a false alarm filter to ignore motion such as swaying trees and small animals so that it can reliably detect moving objects of interest> Axis’ Zipstream technology, a more efficient implementation of the H.264 video encoder that can lower band width and storage use by an average of 50% or more for many surveillance scenarios

SUSTAINABILITY

Making IP camera technology work within the Rotakin standardThe Rotakin standard is a familiar bench-mark for the surveillance industry in the UK. Originally developed by the Home Office in 1989, it belonged to an era of CCTV systems and combined a measure of camera coverage and a detection efficiency test.

As the IP surveillance market grew, the European standard was changed in 2013 to take in megapixels per metre to allow for direct comparison between analogue and IP systems.

But the even new standard was not an across-the-board panacea. There are diffi-culties in adopting the new IP standards in specific environments, manufacturers and system integrators have been challenged when trying to adhere to a standard that aims to get an image to a specific screen height showing live detail, rather than evidence for use at a later date.

So how do we tackle the challenge of making an IP surveillance system work within a standard based around analogue technology?

We spoke to Steven Kenny, Business Development Manager for the A&E programme, UK and Ireland, and author of a new white paper on the subject:

So, Steven, why is this important now?“The simple answer is that according to the highly respected IHS report, all the predictions are that IP cameras are going to start to outsell analogue cameras so we need to look at ways to make IP surveillance work within a standard based around an analogue technology.”

What is the actual problem with the measure?“Many systems use analytics to ‘spot’ objects and people within the camera’s field of view. These alerts go directly to a human operator’s screen for visual confirmation. Because of technology advances, the systems can spot things at a greater distance and in more challenging conditions than ever before.

“But that advancement can then deliver an image which is too small for the op-erator to be able to verify under the stan-dard guidelines. The solution has been to increase the number of cameras watching a zone and shorten the detection zone to make sure the ‘spotted’ event fills the op-erator’s screen to the required minimum recognition size. It’s a complete waste of the cost-saving benefits that higher mega pixel cameras and longer detection zones can deliver. It’s like tying your hands be-hind your back.”

What’s the Axis solution?Axis has developed a specialist function called View Areas in its range of some of its higher mega pixel cameras. They allow individual cropped areas of the image to be streamed from the camera as a single virtual camera and they can be independently viewed and recorded by the video management system.

This multi-streaming, combined with dif-ferent automatic detection zones within a camera’s field of view, allows for the viewing of a specific cropped area of the scene of an event which means fast and accurate visual verification.

”The Rotakin White Paper has been written to address the chal-lenges to specifiers and installers that have been asked to adhere to a percentage of screen height. Other aspects should be also be considered in-line with the standards that sit outside of this document.”

Steven Kenny, Business Development Manager, A&E Programme, UK & Ireland

17

What does this system require?To meet the standard there are a number of hardware and software technologies that are required. They are;

> Axis camera with multi-mega pixel sensor and multiple View-Area functionality.

> Video management system that supports the Axis View Areas as independent video channels.

> Automatic detection analytic that allows for multiple, independent detection zones.

Survey shows public transport operators expand use of real-time surveillance and video analytics for enhanced security.Video surveillance is a very common tech-nology used in public transport, especially for security purposes. UITP, the Interna-tional Association of Public Transport, together with industry expert Axis Com-munications, conducted a survey among public transport organisations to get an understanding of video surveillance in public transport, particularly for security.

The survey reveals that operators world-wide are continuing to invest in leading edge security technology, with the major-ity interested in adopting more widespread use of real-time surveillance and advanced video analytics to better protect their passengers, equipment and installations.

97% of survey respondents have already installed security cameras. This indicates not only a very strong installed base but also that public transport operators are convinced of the baseline value that video surveillance offers their organizations. The vast majority of respondents reported that video surveillance systems help increase the actual and perceived security among passengers and staff, as well as minimize, deter and manage various types of crime and vandalism.

The survey also revealed that public transport staff is generally very positive towards the use of video surveillance with more than 83% indicating posi-tive or neutral reactions, especially when usage of the system is well communicated to staff.

Some responders do not gather staff or passenger feedback, but from those that do, no responder reported a negative reaction from staff or passengers.

The use of video surveillance within pub-lic transport is no longer only a matter of incident evidence, even if the vast major-ity of respondents (86%) find this forensic element the most valuable concrete use. Real-time detection of incidents also scored highly in terms of potential value (72%), indicating this is a trend to come. Already today, 42% of respondents can share live video with other parties such as police or other authorities, and 50+% plan on using real-time video surveillance in “rolling stock” (moving vehicles vs. just in static locations). This underlines the value of real-time video surveillance monitor-ing across all areas of a public transport system.

The survey also evaluated awareness, present usage and future interest in video analytics. The majority of respondents is aware of video detection analytics for intrusion, perimeter breach, fire & smoke and rail track access, with actual usage already between 10-20%. Future inter-est is high with approximately half of the respondents having indicated that they are interested in using these video analyt-ics applications moving forward. Graffiti behaviour detection was a further appli-cation which sparked the interest of over half the respondents.

“The survey results show that many public transport operators utilize video surveil-lance for more than just recorded evidence after incidents have occurred. The real-time possibilities offered by modern IP vid-eo systems are increasingly being used to efficiently manage incidents as and when they occur,” said Lucas Young, Regional Business Development Manager Trans-portation, Axis Communications. “There is also more and more awareness for video analytics and how this can support daily operations to increase safety and security for both passengers and staff.”

“Ensuring citizens around the world get to school or work safely every day is the number one priority for the public trans-port industry. Video surveillance is a key tool to support staff and help public transport operators achieve this aim,” said Alain Flausch, Secretary General, UITP.

RETAIL SURVEY

Retailers want covert CCTV and mobile access to footage, according to new reportCenter for Retail Research report reveals key drivers and trends in CCTV in retail survey released recently.

Andy Martin, Regional BDM Retail

According to the latest annual Centre for Retail Research (CRR) survey into the use of CCTV in retail – commissioned by Axis Communications, the global market leader in network video – 70% of retailers want to introduce covert CCTV and 66% are planning to move to mobile data access in the near future.

The report, which was carried out in July and August of this year (2015), showed that 58.5% of retailers currently use covert CCTV but that 70.1% of those not using covert CCTV, want to start using it in the future and that only 17.6% of retailers are currently able to access live recorded footage but 66% aspire to use mobile access.

The study sharply highlighted the industry’s increasing reliance on CCTV to control stock loss and a demand amongst retailers for higher image quality, even more reliable systems and easy and flexible access to images. A significant 82.7% of retailers said that CCTV reduces losses and 29.7% of retailers are now using fraud analytics to help improve their security with 58.7% planning to in the future.

Andy Martin, Business Development Manager Retail, Northern Europe for Axis said: “The clear and demonstrable return on investment through shrinkage reduction is a huge driving force for IP CCTV implementation. But retailers are not content with just that – they want even higher quality images that they can access easily through mobile technology, and in 29.7% of cases, they want better customer insights such as age and gender analytics and other IP applications such as people counting, queue management and dwell time.”

The report also revealed there is still a 66% majority of the market that is operating on analogue technology giving installers and integrators a strong opportunity to create awareness amongst retailers of the benefits of IP technology.

Andy said “Yes IP is increasing and we saw that trend clearly last year and this, particularly among bigger organisations - 62.7% of retailer chains that have adopted IP have 100 stores or more. But there is still a community of retailers who have yet to be convinced of the true potential of IP technology. We are working hard with our channel partners to bridge that gap and provide the best advice about the products and solutions that are already delivering excellent results for many retailers.”

According to the survey UK retailers are amongst the most likely to adopt IP with 58% saying they are likely to compared to the survey average of 52.7% saying they are likely to. IP systems on average have 21 cameras compared to analogue with 10.3 cameras per system.

Interest in cloud storage has increased by 30% and pubic view monitors are being used mainly to deter crime in 51.4% of cases with 21.8% of retailers placing them only at store entrances.

The ‘CCTV in Retail’ survey was commis-sioned by global market leader in network video, Axis Communications and was run in conjunction with the Centre for Retail Research in Nottingham. Now in its fifth year, it surveyed 2,200 retailers both large and small from a wide variety of sectors and attracted 664 responses from retail-ers in the UK, Ireland, Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden.

The research was carried out by the CRR between July and August 2015 and fol-lows similar Axis-commissioned surveys in 2014, 2013, 2012 and 2010.

Modern technology takes elite athletes over the finish lineTrack and field athletes train more effectively with the help of intelligent camera systems from Axis Communications and Spiideo.

MissionMany athletes need to be able to analyze their movements in order to identify where their training should be focused to achieve their dream results. This can be done with a regular handheld camera, but this method has a number of limitations. Spiideo, an Axis partner, has developed a solution that makes it possible for athletes and their coaches to record movements in real time, and then immediately view and analyze the sequences on a mobile device, without having to worry about handling the camera, starting the recording, or inserting and removing a memory card.

SolutionThe solution consists of AXIS V59 PTZ Network Cameras, which have a smooth and flexible PTZ function, and the intelligent Spiideo app, which is integrated in the camera via the ACAP (Axis Camera Application Platform) interface. The user downloads the Spiideo app to their iPad or iPhone via the App Store. The intelligent AXIS V59 PTZ Network Camera will then start recording when the athlete crosses a predefined line. This means that you can record the sequence of the training that you want to analyze without having to deal with unwanted footage in the recording. The video is stored on the mobile device, where you can then study it at normal speed or in slow motion.

ResultThe solution is easy to install and simple to use. The image quality is high definition and additional imaging can even be applied to enhance the analytical value of the footage. At present, systems are up and running in Gothenburg and Lund. Famous track and field stars and coaches, like Linus Thörnblad (who brought home medals for the high jump in several major championships), are currently using the system with great success.

Analysis on mobile devicesIt’s no secret that track and field athletes have a great need to analyze their movements in order to improve their results. A common method is for the coach to film the athlete with a handheld camera during training. However, this method has its shortcomings because it draws the coach’s focus away from the athlete and puts it more on handling the camera. In addition, some athletes don’t have a coach at their disposal and must instead find a way to film their movements during training on their own. By combining Axis network cameras with Spiideo’s analysis app, a solution has now been developed that makes it possible for athletes and their coaches to film movements in real time, and then immediately view and analyze the sequences on a mobile device. The user simply downloads an app from the App Store to their iPad or iPhone.

Quick recording capabilitiesAXIS V59 Network Camera is designed for audio and video broadcasting. The cameras have HDTV resolution up to 1080 p with 60 images per second; pan, tilt and zoom; high-quality audio; and powerful 30x zoom. A smooth and responsive PTZ feature (pan, tilt and zoom) makes the camera suitable for applications where quick recording capabilities are required. The camera also supports the AXIS Camera Application Platform (ACAP), which means that an analysis program like Spiideo can be uploaded to the camera and does not have to be run on a separate server.

Save or share the resultsSpiideo has installed a number of these systems across Sweden. The simple and easy-to-use system comprises a network, cables, cameras and the Spiideo analysis app, as well as configuration of the system according to the user’s wishes.

Via an iPad or iPhone, the users – athletes and coaches – can then select their discipline (high jump, running, javelin, etc.). The camera will then focus on the start position and follow the athlete through the race, the jump or the throw. Afterwards, the athlete can immediately study their performance, run the footage in slow motion, run it back, and zoom in and then return to training to work on the issues identified. The sequences are also saved on the mobile device and can even be shared via social media.

”We track and field athletes use the Spiideo system regularly. It’s simple and flexible, and gives me exactly the kind of feedback I need after a high jump, for exam-ple. The images from the camera are also really good. I see only benefits to using Spiideo. It helps us athletes get better and better.”

Axis Communications’ Academy - Empowering knowledgeThis year Axis Communications’ Academy is celebrating ten years, a training initiative that since its inception in 2005 has helped more than 3000 partners in the UK, Ireland, Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden to strengthen their network video knowledge and offerings.

Today, ten years later, we can state that it was the correct assessment. Network video accounts for almost 50 percent of all new installations of video surveillance globally, and Axis has strengthened its leading posi-tion in a market.

All training is developed within the frame-work of Axis Communications’ Academy and carried out by Axis’ own trainers. As a result of this commitment to knowledge and learning, Axis Communications’ Acad-emy has developed into a complete, multi-lingual and global knowledge center with an offering that meets needs at every level among partners around the world. And this trend is continuing.

“As a complete novice in the security industry I joined my first Axis Communications’ Acad-emy class, three weeks after my first working day. My expecta-tions were set on learning how a network camera worked, but after the two days course I had learnt so much more. The course was as much about gen-eral network technology, design and implementation of network camera systems as it was about Axis products. I strongly believe that the majority of the Academy participants today have realised the same things that I did. The course will give you knowledge beyond products. It will teach you everything from how to configure and get the best possible picture from a camera to what questions to ask a customer in order to design the best suitable security system. One of the key strengths with the Academy is that there is something for every participant, despite pre-knowledge level and regardless of if you are working in the security or the IT industry.”
