The Goodwin Axial Isolation andControl valves are fully pressure

balanced which results in small actuationforces compared to other valve types.They are suitable for use in compressibleand incompressible media applications aswell as severely corrosive service. Thevalves are designed to be operated byhydraulic, pneumatic, electric ormechanical linear actuation which movesthe piston in an axial motion from opento closed. The control valve variant isused in both modulating and on/offapplications.

AXIAL ISOLATION VALVESAxial Isolation valves are suitable for usein highly demanding applications wheretight shut off, fast operation, highefficiency, low maintenance and lowpressure drop are desirable. This type ofvalve is robust and reliable over longperiods of service permitting use insafety critical areas.

Of course, customers, operators andsuppliers related to the process industriesare ever more safety and environmentallyconscious, and rightly so. As such thereare a series of approvals, tests andregulatory hurdles to overcome in orderto introduce products into safety criticalprocess plant, particularly in the oil andgas industry.

Goodwin has taken a conservativeapproach to new product release, withextensive testing conducted on the newvalves in order to give confidence inmechanical and seal durability andintegrity, both of which determine thelife of the valve.

ENDURANCE TESTINGThe endurance test rig has beendesigned, manufactured and operated inhouse to test the durability of all aspectsof the Axial Isolation valve under as closeto service conditions as practicable.

The test simulates flow through thevalve and operation from open to closedwithin 2 seconds. Pressure is thenapplied and the valve is opened againstfull differential pressure. This test isrepeated for thousands of cycles, during

a fire emergency. The testing isconducted in accordance with API 6FAand ISO 10497 and involves the valvebeing subjected to intense fire and thenoperated. The Goodwin Axial valve wasable to conduct the test twice over andstill meet the pass criteria,demonstrating how robust and safe thedesign is.

As the Isolation and Control valvesshare the same principle of operation,mechanism, body construction andsealing technology, the durability andreliability of both variants can be assuredon the basis of the same tests.

AXIAL CONTROL VALVESAxial Control valves are used as a keypart of process control in a plant, theywill normally be used to very accuratelyinfluence process conditions such as flowrate, upstream or downstream pressureand level control.

This type of valve is generally used inareas where fast response is required,such as anti-surge applications, as well asvery high capacity and where rangeabilityis desired. The axial style control valveticks all of these boxes, whilst also

which time measurement of actuationforces and seat leakage is conducted todetect signs of mechanical or sealdegradation.

The aim of the test is to determine theduty cycle of the valve, with testingcontinuing until failure so that likelyfailure modes for the valve can beconfirmed. With this informationmaintenance intervals and scope are setto ensure optimum product performance.

Goodwin has to date successfullyconducted a substantial number of cycleswith excellent performance results.Using test data, the Safety Integrity Level(SIL) of the valve is determined per IEC61508. This is mandatory when thevalve is specified for safety criticalapplications, including High IntegrityPressure Protection Systems (HIPPS).

TEMPERATURE & PRESSURE CYCLETESTINGDesigned along the lines of the widelyrecognised API 6A PR2 testing, thepurpose of this test is to check theperformance of mechanical componentsand seals when subjected to combinedpressure and temperature cycling.

maintaining highly precise and reliablecontrol over process variables.

Axial style control valves haveunrivalled performance when it comesto achieving the optimum balance ofkey control valve performance factorsincluding: high capacity, high pressurelet down, rangeability, low noisegeneration and elimination ofcavitation (in liquid service).

The Goodwin Axial control valve is alsocapable of achieving very tight shut offeven after long periods in service and socan be specified for combined controland emergency shut down.

CONTROL VALVE TESTINGIn addition to the mechanical and sealtesting conducted, the Axial Controlvalve is also subjected to further testingin accordance with IEC 60534. The testprogramme is focused on the predictionof performance in service, in particularwith regards to flow capacity and noisegeneration.

Optimisation of flow capacity,pressure control and noise for a givenset of installed conditions is the key toensuring that a control valve iscorrectly selected. By conductingextensive testing and capturingdetailed performance data, Goodwin

control valves will be accurately sizedaccording to application.

Goodwin designed, Installed andcommissioned a bespoke blow down testfacility with acoustic measurementcapabilities in order to conduct theaforementioned testing. By doing thisin-house, Goodwin gains a deepunderstanding of control valveperformance. Extensive experimentationon trim design is possible as both thetime and costs required are greatlyreduced.

CONTROL VALVE SIZING SOFTWAREGoodwin have developed bespoke controlvalve sizing software, allowing sizing tobe conducted in compliance with therequirements of IEC 60534. This level ofin house control over software andtesting allows Goodwin to quicklyvalidate optimised designs versus realmeasurements, giving absoluteconfidence that the designs we provideto our customers are correct.

The extensive testing, engineering knowhow and straight forward businessapproach of Goodwin make its AxialIsolation and Axial Control valves a logicalchoice for industries which require highperformance, safe valves from a reputableand cost conscious manufacturer.
