HOW DOES IT WORK? Teams of 5-7 students participate in their choice of the Long-Term Problems and practice Spontaneous Problems. All Team Members may participate in the LT presentation. Teams participate within Age Divisions. These are based upon age of oldest team member. The age calculated as on May 1st of the Upcoming World Finals. WHAT IS ODYSSEY OF THE MIND?The Odyssey of the Mind is an international educational program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students from kindergarten through university. The Team members apply their creativity to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to designing the costumes, props and presenting their own interpretation of literary classics.

Odyssey of the Mind teaches students how to think divergently by providing open-ended problems that appeal to a wide range of interests. Students learn how to identify challenges.

International Creative Problem-Solving Program.

Focus is to develop divergent, independent-thinking

abilities (thinking outside the box through a

challenging, but fun, learning process).

OotM develops real-life communication and

brainstorming skills, and rewards creativity and

"calculated" risk-taking in the solution of complex

problems.

The Brain Behind the Amazing ConceptThe program was started by a NJ College Educator, Dr. C. Samuel Micklus (Dr. Sam) in 1978. Dr. Sam challenged students in his Industrial Design courses to solve assignments in unusual and creative ways.Odyssey of the Mind Program is open to all students over its 38 years of history. Millions of students from conturies including Australia, China, Canada, Germany, Hongkong, Japan, Malaysia, Poland Russia, Singapore, Switzerland, UK, and practically every states in the USA participate at the World Finals.

NASA has been affiliated with Odyssey of the Mind for more than 15 years. The skills and experiences their organization is looking for in future scientists and researchers matches up with the STEM and other benefits from participating on an Odyssey of the Mind team.

Odyssey of the Mind ProblemsPART I - Long term problems:

Mechanical/Vehicle: Teams design, build, and operate vehicles of various sizes and with various power sources to solve certain tasks.

Classics: Each year the creative challenge of this problem requires a solution that incorporates some element of the classical taken from either literature, architecture or art

Structure: Teams design and build a structure using balsa wood and glue. They test it to determine how much weight it can support sometimes more than thousand pounds!

Performance: In this problem teams present performances that revolve around a specific theme and incorporate serveral required elements.

Part II-Spontaneous problem All teams compete in one of three forms of on-the-spot Competition. Spontaneous problems can be Verbal, Hands-on, or verbal-hands-on.

Technical: Teams are challenged to design and build innovative contraptios and incorporate artistic elements in their solutions.
