Award 4449: Fulbright-Carlos Rico Award in North American Studies US$12,500 per semester in Canada plus US$2,300 per month in Mexico 2 awards
Can be held at any university, government agency, or research institution in Canada
Grants are from 4 months to an academic year, and time should be distributed fairly equally between Canada and Mexico. Longer-
term grants are preferred.
The intent of this award is to enhance collaboration among a community of scholars working on issues of relevance to the
special trilateral relationship among the United States, Mexico and Canada, created by shared border s and accelerated by the
North American Free Trade Agreement. Projects across a broad range of disciplines as well as those with an interdisciplinary
focus are welcomed; proposals should reflect topics which would benefit from a trilateral perspective and clearly demonstrate
a need to spend time in both Mexico and Canada.
Specializations: Open to all disciplines except medicine, veterinary medicine and dentistry. Of particular interest are research
questions surrounding North American regionalization, governance, public policy, trade integration, environmental
issues and standards, energy, indigenous issues, migration and identity.

Award 4464: All Disciplines Fulbright Scholar Award US$12,500 for one semester (4 months) or US$25,000 for a full academic year (9 months) 6 awards
Can be held at any university, government agency, or research institution in Canada
Applicants may propose lecturing projects, research projects, or a combination of both in a wide range of subject areas
relevant to Canada or Canada-U.S. relations. Applicants are responsible for securing their affiliation and should include a
letter of invitation from their preferred host institution.
Specializations: While the competition is open to all disciplines, Fulbright Canada is particularly interested in encouraging research
on contemporary issues relevant to Canada, the United States, and the relationship between the two countries.
Applicants should also clearly document the need to be in residence in Canada to carry out the project.

Award 4465: Post-Doctoral Research Award US$30,000 for one academic year (9 months) 1 award
Fulbright Post-Doctoral Research Award at the University of Northern British Columbia
Located in the spectacular landscape of northern British Columbia, the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) is one of
Canada’s best small universities, and for its size, is among the most research-intensive universities in Canada. Much of UNBC’s
research focuses on the social, economic, environmental, and cultural issues of the North. This has led to the establishment of
world-class research in such areas as Natural Resources and the Environment; Rural, Northern and Environmental Health; and the
Sustainability of Communities. UNBC offers interdisciplinary PhD programs in Natural Resources and Environmental Studies, in
Health Sciences, and in Psychology. Research partnerships with the private sector and public agencies have strengthened UNBC’s
role as a resource for the communities of its region. This includes research on the mountain pine beetle, sustainable forest
management practices, bioenergy and the bio-economy, environmental remediation, air quality issues, watershed management,
local and Aboriginal governance, social and economic development in the North, determinants and delivery of health care, and
climate change issues.

Award 4466: Visiting Chairs in Arts and Humanities US$25,000 for one semester (4 months) 3 awards
Fulbright Visiting Research Chair in American Literature at McGill University
Chairholder will teach one advanced course in the area of his or her current research, and will play a central role in monthly
meetings of a faculty working group on African-American Literature and History (bringing together interested faculty members from
the Departments of English, Art History, History, and North American Studies).
The English Department at McGill University invites applications to fill the Fulbright Visiting Research Chair in American Literature for a
four-month residency in 2014-15. Applicants should be productive scholars with significant records of research in African-American
Literature and/or writing of the Black Diaspora. A focus on any author or authors of any period from the 19th-century to the present
would be welcome. To facilitate the Fulbright Chair’s own ongoing work, the Department of English will furnish office space, computer
and telephone access, and library privileges.

Fulbright Visiting Research Chair in Humanities, Social Sciences, and Fine Arts at the University of Alberta
The Faculty of Arts is one of the largest research and teaching centres in Western Canada. It houses over 20 departments and
interdisciplinary programs, numerous institutes and more than 350 full-time faculty members. Several of its departments are ranked

Fulbright Visiting Research Chair in Central American Archeology at the University of Calgary
The University of Calgary offers an opportunity for a Fulbright Visiting Research Chair in Central American Archaeology to collaborate
with a dynamic faculty of research scholars, graduate, and undergraduate students. The Visiting Researcher would collaborate on
the organization and development of a large museum collection of archaeological materials from Central America, and would also
teach a practicum in collections management for advanced undergraduate and graduate students. While based in the
internationally recognized Archaeology Department at the University of Calgary, the successful candidate would also collaborate
with interdisciplinary programs in International Indigenous Studies, Museum Studies, and Latin American Studies. Through the
continued development of the museum collection and through public outreach programs, the Fulbright Visiting Research Scholar
would help integrate university resources with the growing Latin American community in southern Alberta.

The University of Alberta School of Business is one of the best Business schools in Canada in terms of research, teaching and

Fulbright Visiting Research Chair in International Economics and Finance at the
Balsillie School of International Affairs
The Balsillie School of International Affairs (BSIA) is an institute for advanced research, education, and outreach on global
governance. As a hub in a global network of scholars, practitioners, and students, BSIA aims to develop new solutions to humanity’s
critical problems, improve global governance now and in the future, and enhance the quality of people’s lives around the world.
Founded in 2007, BSIA is an equal collaboration among the Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI), the University of
Waterloo (UW), and Wilfrid Laurier University (Laurier). The collaborating institutions bring to BSIA different but complementary
strengths, so they have different roles and responsibilities. The two universities employ BSIA faculty and offer BSIA’s academic

Water is an important economic resource for Alberta, and it is a research focus at the University of Lethbridge. The Univers ity

Fulbright Visiting Research Chair in the Environment and Economy at the University of Ottawa
Building an environmentally sustainable economy is one of the foremost challenges of our time. The chairholder will be
researching some aspect of this issue, from an economic, policy, legal and/or business perspective, and with policy relevance .

Fulbright Visiting Research Chair in East Asia - North American Relations at the University of Calgary The Departments of History and German, Slavic & East Asian Studies seek a Fulbright Canada Scholar working in the broadly defined areas of East Asia–North America relations. We are especially interested in interdisciplinary-minded candidates focusing on the intersections between society, culture, and political economy. East Asia’s growing political and economic importance to Canada and the United States manifests greater social and cultural ties that have important implications for trans-Pacific relations. Fulbright Visiting Research Chair in Food Safety at the University of Alberta
The Faculty of Agriculture, Life & Environmental Sciences (ALES) encompasses the physical, biological, and social sciences and
consists of the Devonian Botanical Garden and four departments: Renewable Resources, Rural Economy, Agriculture, Food,
and Nutritional Science, and Human Ecology. The ALES focuses its research on three major resources: physical including land,
water and energy; biological including food, forests and animals; and human including individuals, families and communities.
Specifically, ALES supports four major research themes that encompass Alberta’s robust physical, biological and human
resources: global food systems, healthy human environments, growing the bio -products industry and sustainable land, forest
and water management. Linkages between departments allow for and stimulate each theme to span the physical, biological
and human aspects of the research.

Fulbright Visiting Research Chair in Food Security at the University of Guelph
Food security exists when all people have access to sufficient, affordable, safe and healthy food to meet their dietary needs
every day and food preferences for an active and health life. This Chair’s objective is to generate effective and innovative
scientific contributions in research, teaching, and policy advice to reduce hunger and achieve food security in both the
developed and developing world. Thematically, research activities will deal with issues of sustainable food availability, fo od
access, food use and global food system efficiencies.

Fulbright Visiting Research Chair in Nutrisciences and Health at the University of Prince Edward Island
UPEI’s areas of research focus include comparative biomedical sciences, aquatic health sciences, environmental sciences,
natural products chemistry, and human development and health. UPEI is home to the Centre for Health and Biotech

applications from leading scholars in private law. The Faculty is seeking to enhance and stimulate its inquiries into the social
dimensions of private law and the concepts underlying private law. In this spirit, the Paul-André Crépeau Centre for Private
and Comparative Law has recently begun to focus its research activities on a nu mber of neglected areas of property and
trusts. Potential avenues of inquiry might look at the social obligations of property, here framed widely as both pertaining to
traditional resources and to intellectual resources; the manner in which private resour ces help to fulfill human capacities or
human development; or the way in which such progressive approaches provide critical additions, correctives or responses to
doctrinal, formal or economic understandings of property institutions. Such an approach might also provoke more detailed
studies of trusts, or investigations into the larger generic concepts relevant to private law, such as ethics, equity (epikei a or
aequitas), loyalty, fiduciary obligations or duty. As well, more precise generic concepts present in some private law systems,
such as good faith or abus de droit might be valuable objects of study. The scholar would possess a distinguished record of
achievement in these areas. Background in other areas of private law would also be an asset. A rich background in the
historical development of property and trust institutions in the United States and around the world would be an additional
asset.
