A Conversation with John Banting, LEED AP BD+C Sustainable Construction Manager

Q: What LEED elements were incorporated into the new Palm Beach State College Technical Education Center to earn LEED Platinum? A: There were many green building elements incorporated into the building’s design from passive design features such as proper orientation to advanced active technologies like the Simply5 lighting controls and solar tubes. This high-performance structure is extremely efficient in the use of its resources using rainwater to flush the toilets, conserving electricity through the highly-insulated building envelope and window glazing with a low solar heat gain coefficient, and the addition of a photovoltaic array. The building is a superb example of a highly collaborative, well thought-out project.

Q: Why is this an exclusive designation? A: Since the inception of LEED in 1998, only 10 projects in the State of Florida have reached LEED Platinum status, and only four are educational facilities. As the 11th LEED Platinum

project in the State of Florida, earning this designation for Palm Beach State College is an honor. What is so unique about this project in comparison to other LEED Platinum projects is that its original goal was LEED Silver. Through collaboration and hard work, the project team was able to reach the goal of LEED Platinum with no additional cost to the owner. I am extremely excited not just for the project team but for the faculty and students of Palm Beach State College and the residents of the City of Belle Glade.

Q: Why is it important for construction companies to include sustainable elements when building? A: As the Sustainable Construction Manager, it is my obligation to recommend to the owner cost-effective green building solutions that will save money and resources, whether it be through reduced upfront costs or throughout the project's life cycle. It is our company's vision to create a more sustainable future, and it is important for other construction firms to embrace this path too.

Project Manager Chris Mattingly (pictured on left) participated in Career Day at Northboro Elementary School in West Palm Beach on June 1. He spoke about Construction Management to Pre-K through fourth grade students, including his daughter's first grade class. "It was a great day with the students at Northboro, and a big thank you to Bill Ruch Utility Contractor for providing the mini-excavator," said Chris.

SCHOLARSHIPThe first Hedrick Brothers Construction & Industry Partners Scholarship for the Trade and Industrial Programs was awarded at the Palm Beach State College Foundation Scholarship Dinner on April 19 in West Palm Beach. Congratulations to recipient Lazzaro Bustamante, a graduate of Glades Central High School, who recently received his

FORESIGHT

Uncompromised Excellence is the Brand Promise of Hedrick Brothers Construction. Recently a long-time team member sent me a Harvey Mackay column which exemplifies this theme and is quite relatable to how we conduct our business. The topic was Lou Holtz and

included his "3 Rules of Life" – 1) Do right, 2) Do every-thing to the best of your ability with the time allotted, and 3) Show people you care. Lou also said that he can get by with only three rules because the people you meet have three basic questions: 1) Can I trust you? 2) Are you committed to excellence? 3) Do you care about me?

Our goal at Hedrick Brothers Construction continues to make the lives of our clients simple, the process enjoyable and to do the "right thing" on their behalf. For more than 33 years, owners have trusted our team with their projects for the professionalism, ability, care and excellence provided. They are also benefitting from the added value and numerous advantages to bringing us on board early in the design process. The clients experience fewer redesigns, a smoothly run project, and a job tht finishes strong by punching out the project as activities are completed – ultimately saving the clients money and time.Congratulations are in order this summer for these examples of Uncompromised Excellence:

• Hedrick Brothers Construction receiving the AIA Florida 2012 Builder of the Year Award. AIA Palm Beach Builder of the Year Awards were obtained three of the past ten years.

• Palm Beach State College Technical Education Center achieving LEED Platinum Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. This project is the 11th Platinum certified building in Florida.

Thank you to the owners, architects, subcontractors and our team for their hard work and dedication.

Many of our team members are represented within this issue of the newsletter. They are building great projects, educating the community and being Fit-Friendly. It is our people that continue to bring value and advantages to the project owners and our company.

We are always ready to Bring Your Visions to Reality.
