Storage

Store in a Cool, Dark, Dry Place

Weevils lie dormant in grain waiting for warm, moist

conditions in which to hatch.

Fungal moulds form on grain when the moisture level in the grain

is high enough for mould to form and thrive. Fungal mould such as

aspergillus will affect the bird’s health, fertility and may cause death.

AVIGRAIN buys grain under standards which ensure grain is free of weevils and

moisture levels are below the level at which mould will form. Once we have mixed

and delivered the grain it needs to be stored and transported correctly. Moisture

and the potential for mould might come about from grain being wet in transit,

getting wet in the aviary or from being stored in humid areas such as near an

aquarium or in a laundry.

It is important that the grain is stored in a dry, cool, dark environment to prevent

fungal mould and weevils in your birds’ feed.

About Avigrain

Avigrain is a specialist birdseed manufacturer and

wholesaler. We are a small, family owned business and

have been operating from our production facility on the

Central Coast of NSW since 1987. Since Avigrain started,

the business has grown to become the largest producer of

breeder’s quality birdseed in Australia.

Consistency

Our aim is to make Avigrain products consistent in both price and quality.

Achieving this consistency in drought prone Australia is demanding, where large

fluctuations in quality and price are normal.

Feedback

Avigrain is associated with consistent, quality product at a reasonable price within

the bird-keeping community. We work hard to maintain this reputation and take

all complaints seriously. We are grateful for suggestions or observations which may

help us improve our service. Any product that fails to meet customer expectations

can be replaced or refunded on the condition that the grain is returned to where

it was sold so that we can analyse the problem.

Please send any comments or ideas to PO Box 5397, Chittaway, NSW, 2259 or

email us on [email protected].

Avigrain birdseed mixes provide the seed component of a balanced avian diet.

In the wild birds eat a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, flowers, plants, nectar, grains,

roots & tubers, nuts, grubs, animal matter such as insects and carrion, grit and even clay.

A pure seed diet will be relatively high in fat and low in nutrients particularly Vitamin

A and calcium. Seed is a vital part of a balanced avian diet but should not be the only

part. Although ‘complete’ diets such as pellets or fortified seed diets claim to provide a

balanced diet they give bird-keepers a false sense of security and do not replicate natural

conditions or nutritional inputs. Also, while little is known about how the mind of a bird

works, bird-fanciers will agree they are intelligent creatures and a monotonous pellet or

seed diet will bore them. A varied diet provides mental stimulation for caged and aviary

birds.

Avigrain advocates a varied balanced diet thoughtfully provided by well-

informed bird-keepers.

Diet suggestions

Fruit and vegetables provide nutrients not present in seed particularly Vitamin A. Just

about any fruit or vegetable can be tried except Avocado which is toxic to birds.

shell, cuttlebone and charcoal provide minerals and trace elements such as calcium.

Insoluble grits aid digestion as birds have no teeth and grind food into a pulp in their

gizzard with the help of grits. Without grits birds may pass seed straight through

thereby losing nutritional input.

This product is made in Australia by a proud Australian

small business.

Avigrain Peachface Mix consists of the following grains

White French Millet, Canaryseed, Grey Stripe Sunflower, Hulled Oats and/or

Safflower.

Millets are annual grasses and are some of the oldest of cultivated crops. In China,

recordsofcultureforfoxtail

andprosomilletextendbackto2000BC.

Milletsare

a summer crop and have a wide planting window, from August through until

February. They are are rich in carbohydrate and low in fibre.

Canary Seed, Phalaris canariensis Canaryseed is a winter grass and is grown

anywhere wheat can be grown. In Australia canary is planted in June and harvested

in December. Canada produces around 80% of the world supply of canary seed,

most of which comes from the province of Saskatchewan. Canaryseed is a vital

ingredient in birdseed mixes as it is highly palatable and nutritionally different

from millet being higher in fibre and lower in carbohydrates. Avigrain maintains a

consistent level of canaryseed in all blends, no matter what the cost.

Hulled Oats or Groats is the grain kernel of oats after the hull has been removed.

Hulled Oats are highly palatable and like millets, full of carbohydrate so are used

sparingly in Avigrain birdseed blends.

Grey Stripe Sunflower and Safflower are oilseeds which are high in fat and fibre.

SunflowersareanativeofNo

rthAmericaandaregrownfor their

oil.Birds love

these oilseeds but because of the high fat levels should be fed sparingly.

BUDGIE Blue Budgie Blue is based on a blend made famous by one of Australia’s budgie legends, Mr Fred Cardona. Fred’s blend was 50% canary, 25% White French and the rest a mixture of jap millet, panorama, panicum, red panicum and hulled oats and this remains our mix.Cardona Mix was the standard blend for any top flight

breeders in Sydney in the 80’s and 90’s. When Avigrain

started to sell in Melbourne in 1999, we found a similar brew

was popular with was 50-60% canary with White French and

Jap Millet making up the rest. Not exactly the same as Fred’s mix

but close enough for us to roll the two up into one mix and that’s what

we’ve been calling Budgie Blue ever since. The critical component in Budgie Blue is canary seed. Canary is higher in

protein and lower in carbohydrates than millet so breeders believe Budgie Blue

gives them a more balanced and less fattening diet than our Budgie Green

which is only 20% canary. BEST QUESTION YET ON BUDGIE BLUE VS BUDGIE GREEN….

“I know Avigrain has Budgie Green for Green Budgies and Budgie Blue for Blue

Budgies but I have Spangles - so what should I feed them?” We told this bloke to mix the two blends together for his spangles and he

seemed happy with that.Avigrain advocates a varied balanced diet thoughtfully provided by well

informed bird keepers. Contact your local club or breeders association for

more information on your birds.WHATS THE Blue RANGEAvigrain Blue are our birdseed blends formulated with no consideration of cost.

Our standard range of Avigrain premium breeders quality birdseed has always

considered value for money. While the ingredients and production processes are the same the Blue products

use expensive, hard to source ingredients such as canary seed, panicum, grey

stripe sunflower, fruit and nuts to produce an optimal blend – whatever the cost. Simply the best!

product that fails to meet customer expectations can be replaced or refunded on the condition that

FINCH Blue Contains and/or:- equal parts Panicum, White French Millet, Canary Seed, Red Panicum, Jap/Shirohie Millet.Top finch breeders prefer panicum to panorama. These seeds have the same botanical name - setaria italica – and are very closely related but breeders feel panorama is coarser, less palatable and

harder to crack for smaller species than panicum. Avigrain guarantees the use of panicum in Finch Blue. Many Finch Mixes have canola or rape seed, linseed, hulled

oats and sometimes niger in the blend. Finch Blue contains no

oilseeds and tonics allowing breeders add their own tonics separately.

Finch Blue also contains more canary seed and red panicum than commercial

mixes and with White French and Japanese or Shirohie Millet provides an

optimal base blend for finch fanciers.Avigrain Finch Blue provides the optimal base seed mix for all Finch types

• Less grey stripe sunflower (10%) and Safflower

than other blends. Many breeders and fanciers

believe there are too many oilseeds in parrot blends

and that this can lead to obesity and liver problems. Cockatiel Blue

limits the amount of oilseeds available.• More canary seed (20%) which is higher in protein and lower in

STORAGE STORE IN A COOL, DARK, DRY PLACEWeevils lie dormant in grain waiting for warm,

moist conditions in which to hatch.Fungal moulds form on grain when the moisture level in the grain is high enough for mould to form and thrive. Fungal mould such as aspergillus will affect the bird’s health, fertility and may cause death. AVIGRAIN buys grain under standards which ensure grain

is free of weevils and moisture levels are below the level at

which mould will form. Once we have mixed and delivered the

grain it needs to be stored and transported correctly. Moisture and the potential for mould might come about from grain being wet

in transit, getting wet in the aviary or from being stored in humid areas such as near

an aquarium or in a laundry. It is important that the grain is stored in a dry, cool, dark environment to prevent

fungal mould and weevils in your birds’ feed.

ABOUT AVIGRAIN Avigrain is a specialist birdseed and poultry feed manufacturer and wholesaler. We are a small family owned business which has been operating

from a factory on the Central Coast since 1987 and from our Darling Downs site in QLD since 2010.

The business has grown to be Australia’s largest birdseed supplier as well as selling the Avigrain

poultry range for free range backyard layers.

FEEDBACK We are grateful for suggestions or observations which may help

us improve our service. Any product that fails to meet customer

expectations can be replaced or refunded on the condition that the grain is

returned to where it was sold so that we can analyse the problem. Please send any comments or ideas to PO Box 5397, Chittaway, NSW, 2259

or email us on [email protected] KEEPING TIPS

• Clean, plentiful water is a must. • Plenty of sunlight. • Consider Vitamin and Mineral Supplements and worming regularly.

• Ensure dry, clean, well ventilated housing. • Learn about all aspects of keeping poultry – your local Department

of Primary Industries, poultry clubs and respected breeders are great

starting points. • Feed ad lib and expect to feed layers about 100-130g a day.

• Layer output will vary depending on age of stock, sunlight, housing

weather conditions, predators to name a few. Work on best conditions to

maximise laying potential.

WHAT TO FEED BACKYARD LAYERS?Domestic poultry have been kept for thousands of years by humans to provide eggs

and meat. Grain supplemented by household scraps and pasture foraging is the

traditional diet and this style of feeding remains a great option.Manufactured feeds in the form of pellets, crumbles or mash are now used in

commercial poultry production. A complete and balanced ration is provided in a

controlled environment with the aim of maximising egg or meat production at the

lowest cost. These rations include medicines, vitamin and minerals and protein

supplements to ensure health and nutrition is balanced and complete.Q. What is RAM?A. Restricted Animal Materials are any material taken from a vertebrate animal

other than tallow, gelatin, milk products or oils. It includes rendered products such

as blood meal, meat meal, meat and bone meal, fish meal, poultry meal, feather

meal, and compounded feeds made from these products. Many manufactured poultry feeds contain restricted animal materials in order to

provide cheap protein. These feeds cannot be fed to ruminants due to the risk of

Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE, often called ‘mad cow disease’) a disease

of cattle that causes brain changes and death. AVIGRAIN FEEDS DO NOT CONTAIN RAMPeople keeping poultry at home can choose between manufactured

or natural grain based feeds. A good manufactured feed will provide a complete diet so it is simple and easy but bland for

the birds who generally far prefer grain. A supplemented grain based diet for free range backyard birds will provide the energy and nutrition the birds need plus encourage natural foraging which will provide the birds with vitamins, minerals and protein. With access to fresh water, pasture, household scraps, calcium grits and a safe, clean roost, these birds will lay well – as they have done for thousands of years. As with birdseed our philosophy is that a varied balanced diet provided by well informed fanciers will lead to happy hens and lots of eggs. Avigrain layer feeds cater for all these feeding options so you can choose which product best fits your circumstances.

SCRATCH MIX Scratch Mix is a supplemented grain diet...Contains:- Wheat, cracked corn, sorghum, 15% protein free range layer pellets, cracked

lupins, black sunflower, insoluble shell grit, soluble calcium carbonate, salt.

Protein 12% minFat 4% minFibre 5% maxSalt < 0.3%Energy Mj/kg 3000 kCal/Kg as fedBreakdown of the grains used in Avigrain poultry feeds:-Wheat, Corn, Sorghum, Millets – the cheapest energy grains - high in carbs but lower in

protein than layers require. Lupins, Peas – legumes high in plant proteins. Canola, Safflower, Black and Grey Sunflower – oilseeds the birds love to eat plus high in

fats and protein – low in carbohydrate. Canola is a source of methionine.

15% Free Range Layer Pellets – contain vitamin and mineral premix, yolk colorant, do not

contain antibiotics, growth promotant, hormones, RAM or urea.

Hi Protein Layer Crumbles – contains vitamin and mineral premix and a natural herbal

coccidostat which means no withholding period for layers. Soluble Grits – all our grain mixes have calcium carbonate or limestone chips

which provide calcium for good shell structure. Insoluble Grits – grain mixes require grinding grits for digestion of whole or

cracked grain in the gizzard. We use an insoluble shell grit plus birds will

naturally pick our small stones while foraging.WHY KEEP BACKYARD CHICKENS? • Recycle household food waste into eggs and fertiliser. • Give children responsibility and an understanding of animals. • Help the environment by producing and

eating locally. • Because a free range happy hens are gorgeous pets. • Connect with the food you eat.
